Significance - The Company~ whose financial activities John L. Jerome directed as Treasurer, had been formed in 1892 by the consolidation of The Colorado and Iron Company and The Colorado Fuel Company, and their respective subordinate enterprises. The older of the predecessor companies was The Colorado Coal and Iron Company, wnich traced its ancP.stry to January 11, 1372, the date on which General , builder of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway, together with a group of close associates, formally organized The Central Colorado Improvement Company, with control of extensive lends in Pueblo and Fremont counties. Four years later, the same promoters created The Southern Colorado Coal and Town Com?any, with possession of several thousand acres mainly in Las Ar.tmas County, The ~o enterprises owned some of the richest iron, limestone, and coal lands in southern Colorado, resources which tha entrepreneurs hoped to bring together for the manufacture of iron and . This plan materialized in 1079 with the formation of The Colorado Coal and Steel Works C~any. The following year all three of Palmer's firms were consolidated as The Colorado Coal and Iron Company, and construction was started on the Steel Works in South Pueblo along the line of the Denver and Rio Grande. After lOCO, The Colorado Coal and Iron Company operated the only and converter between the M!ssouri River and the ~ac!fic Coast. In spite of spectacular success in manufacturing steel rails and a variety of other metal products, the enterprise remained primarily a fuel company, operating numerous coal mines in the southern counties of the state, and in the mountain district. The output of these mines were used, in part, at the Bessemer Works, together with iron ore and limestone, and coal was marketed widely throughout the plains and mountain states. During the decade of the eighties, as Palmer's enterprise combined extractive industries with primary and secondary manufacturing, became increasingly competitive and profit margins narrowed, sometimes vanishing, as the excess capacity of Colorado's mines drove prices down throughout the region. At this time, The Colorado Coal and Iron Company encountered severe competition from a series of companies, all of which were eventually consolidated as The Colorado Fuel Company under the menagement of John C. Oagood.

An Ottumwa, Iowa, businessman and coal operator, Osgood, following a thorough survey of Colorado's coal lands in 1803, established The Denver Fuel Company and TI1e Elk MOuntain Fuel Company, to operate, respectively, in Las Animas and Gunnison counties. In 1089, the two enterprises were absorbed by The Colorado Fuel Comp~ny, which began expanding into other coal-rich counties throughout the state. In 1890, Osgood, in order to effectively exploit his company's coal and iron resources, developed plans for a steel works in Denver. When faced with competition in manufacturing, in addition to fuel production, The Colorado Coal and Iron Company bad no alternative but to negotiate a merger. Osgood dictated the terms of the consolidation that led to the formation of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company in 1892.

John L. Jerome, about 18~~, became associated with The Colorado Fuel Company and related enterprises when Osgood approached the firm of Jerome and Toll for legal services. Commencing with The Elk MOuntain Fuel Company, in 1808, v l-) · \._,~

Jerome gradually invested in Osgood's promotions, increasing his participation until within four years such busineGs matter~ occupied a major portion of his time.

Soon after the formation of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, Jerome was appointed director and member of the firm's executive committee. Perhaps because the partnership with Toll was diocontiriu~d at this ticc, Ocgood prevailed upon Jerome to accept the ?Osition of Treasurer, which he filled for a decade, exercising primary responsibility for the enterprise's =inancial affairs.

The John L. Jerome Collection contains 356 pieces of correspondence, mostly letters to and from Osgood relating to the financial affairs of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. Tnese materiels reveal the intracacies of financing the enterprise during the lean years of depression following the ~anic of 1093, and the subsequent years of fierce competition between units within the iron and steel industry. The balance of the materials consists of miscellaneous business documents, mainly relating to Jerome's relationship with Osgood, scrapbooks, some of them pertaining to the Jerome family, and genealogical items that reveal the history of the Jerome family.

The Jerome Papers, at the present time, are the only manuscri pt materiels in a pu~lic depository that treat of the htstory of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company for the period from about 1092 to 1903. That company, because of its extensive land holdings and varied activities, from transportation, to extraction of resources, to manufacturing, was in the forefront of industrial development in Colorado. It has long been and remains today the largest private corporation in the state in terms of employment and value of products produced.

Provenance - The papers of John Lathrop Jerome were given to the Library of The State Historical Society of Colorado in 1967 by Mr. Stephen Hart, President of the Society and a grandson of the late John L. Jerome. The collection consists of business correspondence and of a legal brief, in 26 sections, prepared by Jerome as a "Statement of Business and Personal Relations-- John C. Osgood and John L. Jerome-- August 1SD2 to Auguat 1903." Also included in the collection are photograph albums, newspaper and memorabilia scrapbooks, daily journals, manuscripts, printed materials, drawings, and miscellaneous memorabilia, most of which has been microfilmed.

A further addition to the John L. Jerome collection was made to the Library by Dr. James Grafton Rogers. This material consists of a duplicate of the legal brief contained in the Hart material, and of four pieces of biographical material.

The collection is accessioned with the number 282CJ entered in the 1967-68 accession book, approximately 400 pieces. '-..-.) . '-"-.1 ~

BIOGRAPHY OP JOlm LATHROP JEROME b. 7-6-1854 Fabius, N.Y. d. 11-22-03 Buffalo Parlt, Colo. m. 1876 Lucy Wright Sweetland children - Mrs. Elizabeth Hart Mrs. Cornelia McGowan Miss Janet Jerome John Lathrop Jerome was born in Fabius, Onondaga County, New York, July 6, 1654, the son of Charles Jerome, a Presbyterian minister, and of Elizabeth (Reed) Jerome. Jerome attended Rural High School and Hamilton College, graduating from the latter in 1873. In August, 1873, Jerome left New York for Central City, Colorado, one of the most active mining camps in the West, where he assumed the principalship of the public schools. Jerome remained in Central City until 1875, when he moved to Denver to study law in the offices of Sayre, Wright and Butler, during which time he worked as both a law clerk and as a court reporter. On October 17, 1076, Jerome married Lucy Wright Sweetland, of Cazenovia, New York, and in 1877 became a practicing attorney in partnership with a Hamilton College classmate, John O'Brien. This association lasted one year, at the end of which O'Brien moved his practice to Leadville. During 1881, Jerome served as Denver City Attorney, and, at about this same time, became associated with another Hamilton College classmate, Charles H. Toll, Attorney General of the State, a partnership that was dissolved in 1892. During the period of this partnership, Jerome and Toll acted as legal advisors for John C. Osgood, with whom Jerome was soon to become involved in many business vcn~ures.

In 1892, Jerome took his brother-in-law, Thomas H. Hood, into partnership, continuing in active practice htmself until 1093, when personal business affairs assumed a level of primary importance in his life. During this year Jerome became Treasurer of The Denver Public Warehouse Company and of The Overland Cotton Mill Company, an organization of which he was later to become principal owner and President. In this same year Jerome also became Treasurer and director of the recently-formed Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (now The Colorado Fuel and Iron Steel Corporation). He remained an officer and director of the company until 1903 when he resigned both positions to devote himself full time to his work at The Overland Cotton Mill Company. \ . G \_...) ~ ruw 5. 7-22-68

The coal strll~e of 1903 led to a serious shortage in fuel, and in November, Jerome was forced to close down the cotton mills. During this period, Jerome refused to collect rent from Overland Village residents and promised to keep his workers provided with supplies. Such a humanitarian effort was a severe financial hardship for Jerome, and on November 22, 1903, while at his mountain home in Buffalo Park, Colorado, he died, only hours after the death of his Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. associate and friend, Julian A. Kehler. Jerome was active in several Denver civic organizations during his years there. He was founder and First Vice President of the University Club of Denver, President for 3 terms of the Denver Club, a founder and member of the Overland Country Club, a life member of the Denver Athletic Club, and a member of the Denver Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Jerome was a member of the University Club and of the Whist Club of New York City, and of the Chicago Club. At the ttme of his death, Jerome was a trustee of Hamilton College, a member of the Society of the Sons of the Revolution, and Governor of the Society of Colonial Wars. v ~ ·w
