The ability to offer a level or type of care not commonly available is what sets a district apart. Robust research programs, based on established centers of excellence within the district, can serve as the basis for developing new and specialized care options, and attract patients from national and international markets. Shadow Lane provides a logical organizational center for the core of the LVMD. Already an established link between University Medical Center/Valley Hospital Medical Center and UNLV Shadow Lane, its function will be reinforced with the development of the UNLV Medical Education building.

More than just a physical connector, the Shadow Lane spine should ideally become a social connector, providing spaces where students and medical professionals can meet and collaborate. There may be an opportunity to create a shared facility along Shadow Lane that could provide dining opportunities, meeting space, a medical library, fitness center, district concierge and hotel space.
