6 American Square Dance. September 1998 The Kentucky Dance Foundation presents: ,leptedi The Joy of Dancing KDF 012

You've enjoyed Bob Howell's monthly "Easy Level" column in this publication for many years. Now you can see and hear Bob as he teaches and calls a collection of the fun dances he's noted for. As dancers you'll be able to join in on the various contras, circle and solo dances. As a caller you'll learn from Bob the principles of prompting and teaching. The video is loaded with variety, fun and fine musical accompaniment. We're not saying that by studying this presentation you, too, will become an accomplished caller/prompter and teacher -- but it won't hurt.

This months contra was contributed by Dennis Ricker, known to some on the internet as "Contrafela". It uses a movement I haven't danced in forty years, "right hand high, left hand low". What makes the choreography unusual is that the movement is done with only three dancers in a line of four. Curious? OK, let's look at the dance. "Maristella Arch", Alternate-duple with 1, 3, 5, etc. crossed over. A good deal of the material was released at the national convention, not giving me enough time to go through my normal process. Next month all should be back to normal. Thanks, Chris. Q-922 The Ballad Of Jed Clampett Shane Greer Kind of campy, definitely fun. O0000 dogies! Callers, dancers, and young'uns of all ages will enjoy the music and the lyrics to this piece. Banjo ( a must for this music), guitar and fiddle lead the way for the fun loving caller to be creative. Figure: Hds(Sds) Square Thru 4, RH Star, LH Star, R&L Thru, Swing Thru, Boys Run, Chain Down the Line, Promenade! CRC-114 Your Cheating Heart Gary Shoemake I'm a long time fan of Hank Williams Sr., so I'm always on the lookout for adaptations of his music. This one's a rouser with nice guitar work and a banjo background. Possible patter music? You decide. Watch for the key change! Figure: Hds(Sds) Square thru 4, R&L Thru, Swing Thru, Boys Run, Bend the Line, then ML Thru, Dixie Style, Boys Trade, Le ft Swing Thru, Left Roll Promenade! BM-1018 Handy / Old Joe Jr. Hoedown A double sided patter record-sometimes a good value in music. Both sides had that old time barn dance feel with "Handy" being the more rhythmically active of the two. Always give hoedown music a listen there is something there for everyone. LM-210 Whoop Square It Is! Charlie Robertson Shades of Mother Goose, Dr. Suess, and a little rappin'. Callers: if you want to try something unusual, but very entertaining, give this one a whirl. MI-5212 Over & Over Again Wayne MacDonald From the Dave Clark Five and the mid 60's, this one has good zip for those Hi Hat fans. Callers would do well to research the lyrics first. Watch for the key change! Figure: Standard Figure. 54 American Square Dance, September 1998 ABC-3 I Will Follow Him Jiri Slaby Based on the 70's pop tune, this piece of square dance music bails from the Czech Republic. BS-2448 The Sheik Of Araby Johnnie Wykoff With mid-eastern strains in the background, this adaptation from the old pop tune comes across well with that Blue Star "big band" feel. Nice musical change-ups. Not for that relaxing part of your dance! Watch the key change! Figure: Hds(Sds) Lead Right, Circle to a Line, Pass the Ocean, Ladies Trade, Ladies Run, Ferris Wheel, Ctrs. Pass Thru, Box the Gnat, Square Thru .7, Corner Swing & Promenade! RB-3074 Look At Us Don Williamson Adapted from the very fine Vince Gill tune. This sentimental number sails right along for some fun dancing without losing the theme of the original-those strong, wonderful, long lasting relationships. Lots of guitar leads for this one. Callers - dedicate this one to your one and only! Figure: Hds(Sds) Promenade 1/2, Square Thru 4, R&L Thru, 8 Chain 6, Corner Swing & Promenade! RYL-233 Swing Low T Oxendine & J Story Spiritually based, this typically bright Royal piece lends itself well to harmonized duets and always will make a good presentation to those dancers who are planning to skip church on Sunday! Where Are The Dancers? Reprint from Open Squares, 19:4 Our old square dance club just isn't, the same We're wondering where we can put the blame Our hall is the tops, acoustics the best We don't do the rounds, a person must rest Of course we have visitors, but they don't make a fuss We're just as well off, they don't dance quite like us That is the reason we form our own squares When visitors come, they can make theirs Our club doesn't like mixers, they change us about When one is put on, the members sit out From out in the kitchen we hear the call One couple is needed, out there in the hall We used to rush out to fill up the square But when we got in, only visitors were there I got a hard look from the man on my right After all, I've been messing up squares all night The dance starts at eight, that's a gosh mighty hour At a quarter to eight I'm still in the shower Let the visitors come early, to me that's all right After all, it's our club, and we stay late each night Who cares if the caller must work the next day After all, he's the caller, and he gets the pay The dance should stop at 11, to some that's just fine But most of us members don't get there till nine The caller has tried to get us to change So if we fold up, I guess he's to blame. American Square Dance. September 1995 83 Open Letter To The Callers, Cuers, Prompters and Instructors of the 47th National Square Dance Convention, Charlotte, N.C. June 24 - 27, 1998

As Program Chairman, we want to express our sincere appreciation to the callers, cuers, prompters and dance instructors who attended and participated in the 47th National Square Dance Convention. This includes the dance leaders who spent many hours preparing the exhibition teams which did such an outstanding job. We, along with the entire Program Committee, were elated with the cooperation of all the dance leaders on and off the floor. Our volunteer staff who worked in the dance halls, coordination room, hospitality room, and security room all had very good experiences and join us in saying THANK YOU for being in Charlotte. We also called on many of you prior to the convention for advice and guidance and always received the utmost cooperation. We also thank CALLERLAB, American Callers Association, ROUNDALAB, CONTRALAB, and C.L.O.G. for their support in working with us and giving us time on their busy agendas. We especially wish to thank the dance leaders of the Carolinas without whose help the task would have been impossible. They came on board with us from the very beginning and gave us their full support and cooperation. Little did we know when we accepted the position of Program Chairman what was in store for us! The first goal we set was to have a convention that would not only be enjoyable for the dancers but also would be a good experience for the dance leaders. We spent many hours and traveled many miles talkingwith dance leaders and dancers all across the United States asking what they thought was needed to have a good dance program at the National Square Dance Convention. We gave it our best shot and hope you enjoyed being in Charlotte as much as we enjoyed having you. Many dancers do not realize that the dance leaders who attend the National Square Dance Convention pay their own way and 47th National Convention donate their time. We hope dancers who read this will keep them in mind when booking their conventions, festivals and dances. Ron & Nancy Jacobs, Program Chairman 47" National Square Dance Convention is Ed with Dick Waibel and Larry Cole.

e can't believe it is the start of school so quickly. It seems like the kids just got out last week. Classes are starting and PE teachers are looking for Wactivities to fill their schedules. It is a good time to contact them and ask them about teaching some "simple" line dances. Most teachers will jump at the chance and the kids like it also. Just a few points to remember: • You have to keep the instruction simple and done quickly. • You should use upbeat modern music. • You have to be able to show them a good time and let them let off steam. • Do not get upset when they put their own moves to the dance. • Remember that you will wear out before they will, so pare yourself. Above all have fun and show them you are having fun ... smile. The line dance this month is — I LIKE IT— enjoy!
