7. Conclusion : Telefilm, Cross-Media Migration, and the Demise of the Film Serial Abstract The conclusion offers an outlook past the 1940s. It places film serials in the context of the shifting cinema landscape in the 1940s and 1950s and the rise of television. The chapter compares the viewer address of film serials to television’s programming in terms of a ‘segmented flow’ and argues that film serials imagined and practiced a televisual mediality before the advent of TV. Serials and television thus became convergent media, which counters the prevalent notion that television killed film serials. The chapter further stresses the adaptability of the film-serial form to varying exhibition and distribution contexts, which helps to explain their continuous reappearance in the multiple ‘new media’ in the second half of the twentieth century and in the digital culture of the twenty-first century. Keywords: television programming, televisual flow, post-WWII film history, independent film production The present moment is an arbitrary one to end a study of film serials. Al- though the heyday of their production is well in the past, serials that were thought to be lost continue to reappear in archives or in private collections. Online fan groups like the serialsquadron.com offer increasing numbers of serials on DVD. Other enthusiasts make them available on youtube or upload them to archive.org, and scholars like Richard Koszarski are making an effort to locate ‘new’ film serials. In the final months of writing, for instance, Pathe’s The House of Hate (1918) was located in Russia, digitalized, and translated back into English. -

Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone. -

Warner Brothers stable of Western stars included (l to r) Will Hutchins – Sugarfoot, Peter Brown – Deputy Johnny McKay in Lawman, Jack Kelly – Bart Maverick, Ty Hardin – Bronco, James Garner – Bret Maverick, Wade Preston – Colt .45, and John Russell – Marshal Dan Troupe in Lawman, circa 1958. Westerns became popular in the early years of television, in the era before television signals were broadcast in color. During the years from 1959 to 1961, thirty-two different Westerns aired in prime time. The television stars that we saw every night were larger than life. In addition to the many western movie stars, many of our heroes and role models were the western television actors like John Russell and Peter Brown of Lawman, Clint Walker on Cheyenne, James Garner on Maverick, James Drury as the Virginian, Chuck Connors as the Rifleman and Steve McQueen of Wanted: Dead or Alive, and the list goes on. Western movies that became popular in the 1940s recalled life in the West in the latter half of the 19th century. They added generous doses of humor and musical fun. As western dramas on radio and television developed, some of them incorporated a combination of cowboy and hillbilly shtick in many western movies and later in TV shows like Gunsmoke. -

Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -

Mattaponi Sundowners Match July 15, 2018 By: Major BS Walker “ Clint Walker “ Clint Walker was born Norman Eugene Walker on May 30, 1927 in Hartford, Illinois. He had a twin sister named Lucy. He left school to work at a factory and on a Riverboat. He later joined the Merchant Marines at 17 in the last few months of World War 2. After leaving the Merchant Marines he also worked as a doorman at the Sands Hotel, a Sheet Metal worker and a bouncer at a Night Club. His first acting role was in a Bowery Boys film called Jungle Gents where he played a Tarzan type character and then he was cast in the movie The Ten Commandments, both under the name of Jett Norman. With his handsome looks at 6’-6” tall with a 48” chest and a 32” waist, Warner Brothers announced in June of 1955 that now Clint Walker would be cast as Cheyenne Bodie in their new series Cheyenne. Cheyenne ran from 1955 until 1963. Not known as a singing cowboy his pleasant baritone voice was used throughout the filming of Cheyenne and later Warner Brothers produced an album. Clint Walker was featured in several films with modest returns with his best known being” Yellowstone Kelly”. He later appeared in more than 40 films including The Dirty Dozen and made appearances on television shows too numerous to mention. In 2004 he was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Clint Walker died of congestive heart failure in Grass Valley, CA. -

Of the 267 eligible voters, 248 responded this year to help select champions in 17 categories. Discussion Questions • When Penny’s mother died she stayed at her family’s Virginia home to look after the family business despite having no formal background in horseracing. How do you think she became so successful so quickly? • Penny hoped that Lucien Laurin would come out of retirement to help her train her horse. At first he resisted. Why did he change his mind? • As the horse was growing up, they called him Big Red. When they began to race him in respectable races he was forced to have a more respectable name. What does the name Secretariat mean? Why do you think they chose this name? Do you think the name Secretariat fits the horse? Why? • While there was stress on Penny’s family relationships because she was back and forth between her homes in Colorado and Virginia, her family remained intact. What are some of the reasons you attribute to the fact that the bonds between her and her children, and her and her husband were still strong at the end of the film? • What do you believe was behind Penny’s desire to succeed? At one point in the film Penny realized that they could sell everything from her parent’s estate and pay off what they owed on the farm, but she was not willing.
