CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION

Our 1st XI remain in first place, but there are only 3 points between them and runners up Ballinger Waggoners, who apparently managed to finish a match last Saturday whereas all Ley Hill games were rained off.

You may be wondering why I haven’t mentioned the 2nd XI as regards league placings. This is because the Mid-Bucks league has decided not to record league placings this year since they have played less than half a season even though they are fulfilling the league fixtures.

CELEBRITY MATCH No 6 – YORKSHIRE CCC – 23rd May 1995

This was a Benefit match for Yorkshire player Ashley Metcalfe. Ashley had married one of ’s two daughters and our LHCC player (at that time) Peter Philpot had married the other one. Hence we found ourselves hosting a match for Ashley in his Benefit year.

Just before the game started, Dave Beasant (goal keeper for Southampton United who lived locally), turned up and asked if he could play so he was co-opted into the LHCC team. A good move as he opened the bowling and caught and bowled opener for a with his fourth ball.

Darren Gough was supposed to attend, but had to drop out at the last minute because the ECB said their test matches against the West Indies were more important than coming to Ley Hill.
