    THE MIRACULOUS INFANT JESUS OF PRAGUE Fr. Peter Davies, O.Carm. In 1945 came the end of the Second World War. As soon as the gates of a concentration camp near Prague were flung open, a certain holy priest walked out that day from the place which he had never expected to leave alive. A deep gratitude filled his heart as he directed his steps immediately towards the Church of Our Lady of Victories. There he celebrated his first Mass in freedom beneath the statue of the Holy Infant of Prague, so much revered by his people. A few months later this holy man was nominated and consecrated Archbishop of Prague, and a little later still his name was to become a household word throughout the world; for this was Archbishop Beran, the prelate who has suffered so much in his struggle with the communists. THE STORY OF THE STATUE What is the history of this image of the Child Jesus, beloved of the Czech people, to which devotion has spread among all the peoples of the world? It is a story intimately connected with the Order of Carmel, and shows the loving care of the Divine Child for the Order which has as its aim the glorification of His Mother. The image itself is beautifully moulded of wax, and is eighteen inches high. Copies of it may be seen in very many convents, churches and homes. The child‟s figure is crowned with a golden crown, the orb is carried in the left hand, and the right hand is extended in blessing.

    Infant of Prague gives hope to couples seeking ‘a child to love’ By Maria Wiering [email protected] Twitter: @ReviewWiering ELLICOTT CITY – Four words were on the index card: “A child to love.” Left in a box at the foot of a statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague at St. Paul, Ellicott City, the card was the prayer of a couple hoping to conceive and seeking the efficacy of a centuries-old devotion. The prayer prompted Dr. Michael Cataldo, a St. Paul parishioner and founder of the Society of the Infant Jesus, to organize an annual Mass at St. Paul for couples who desire to have a child. Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski celebrated the second annual Mass Oct. 19, along with St. Paul’s pastor, Father Matthew Buening. About 20 people attended the Friday evening Mass, which was followed by a catered Italian dinner at the adjacent parish hall. “Popular devotions really bring to a human level divine mystery,” Bishop Rozanski said in his homily. “The Infant of Prague is a devotion that helps us to realize that Jesus came to us vulnerable as a child, and yet, still clothed with kingship.” He continued: “It’s appropriate that we gather this evening with this Infant of Prague devotion, asking the Infant of Prague to be with our married couples here who seek to bring new life into the world, who seek to participate in God’s creation, and who find in this devotion the reality of God with us.” The original Infant of Prague statue was the wedding gift of a Spanish princess, who brought it to Bohemia in the 16th century.

This practice often comes into conflict with conservation and restoration procedures. The case study investigated in the present paper is a little statue representing the Infant Jesus of Prague from Macchia Giarre (Catania, Italy), a plaster cast produced in 1928 by a Roman manufactory. The artefact underwent several interventions during the years. In January 2013 it was damaged during the traditional procession, making necessary an urgent restoration. The conservative project was supported by a history study of plaster casts and by diagnostic analysis performed through X-ray spectroscopy and computerized axial tomography, in order to gather information on the structure and on the materials.   • Infant of Prague
    Infant of Prague I would like to briefly share with you my recent experience of going on a spiritual pilgrimage to visit the Infant Jesus of Prague shrine in the Czech Republic. Most of us probably remember having at home (or at least seeing one somewhere) an Infant of Prague statue. The story behind it is very important and reminds us of God calling all of us to be humble in His sight. The statue itself originated in Spain as a family heirloom belonging to Maria Manriquez de Lara who brought the statue with her to Czechoslovakia when she married the Czech nobleman, Vratislav of Pernstyn. Eventually in 1628 the statue was brought for public devotion to a church in Prague cared for by the Discalced Carmelites. Fr. Cyril was the first person to promote the devotion to the Infant in gratitude for having been granted an assurance of his religious and priestly vocation. During the Thirty Years War, the church was seriously damaged and so was the statue (which was lost for awhile and eventually found by Fr. Cyril.) Unfortunately, the hands were broken. One day while mediating before the statue, he heard a voice, “Have pity on Me and I will have pity on you. Give Me My hands and I will give you peace. The more you honor Me, the more I will bless you!” At that very moment, Fr. Cyril noticed the broken hands and attempted to have it repaired but no funds were available.
