Landcruising Australia Wide February 2014 Page 11 Landcruising Australia Wide February 2014 Page 12 Beachport Australia Day Weekend Trip report by Darrell Sims

Glorious on Saturday, magnificent on Sunday would be the only way to describe the weather conditions for club members and friends who ventured to Beachport for the long weekend. Friday night saw a full contingent of participants migrate to an open bedouin constructed between the caravans of Ralph & Darryl, for a social get together, a nibble & a little beverage. It was a great opportunity for the new members to get to know the old hands. Arrangements were put in place for the trip south on Saturday, with the decision made that all participants would travel as one party. Saturday morning, spot on 9.00am, twelve four wheel drive Toyotas assembled at the entrance to the southern Oceans caravan Park, ready to be led south by Alan & Ellen McIntyre. There were approximately thirty other vehicles, many Victorians, also assembled for a days beach driving. Tyre pressures were generally around 18 psi, with several vehicles lower. A roll call of participants followed as we took off, and a few house rules, such as waiting for the vehicle following, was handy advice for first timers. Alan advised as to what we could expect in sand conditions as to the layout of the beach.

On to the beach for the run to Southend was fairly easy going as we took in the beauty of . We did not run in to a lot of other vehicles to this point. A dead whale on the beach was showing signs of decay. Through the fishing village of Southend we then followed tracks through Canunda NP interspersed with runs along the beach. Along the beach before turning back in to the park four vehicles suffered the indignity of getting bogged with in 300 metres of each other.

Shovels and Maxtrax saw all four vehicles safely out of trouble. Several steep climbs off the beach tested drivers capabilities. Morning tea at a headland in the Park was appreciated by all.

Landcruising Australia Wide February 2014 Page 13 Beachport Australia Day Weekend Trip report by Darrell Sims

The tracks through Canunda National Park are just that and drivers need to be aware of any on coming traffic as well as allowing other parties to get ahead. The local flora is quite outstanding but leaves some superficial scratches. We arrived at Bruce’s hill for lunch, where the picnic gear came out. It is amazing as to the array of foods that were consumed. Alan made it to the top of the sand hill, which was very cut up. Several others tried with only one other (Paul & Rachel) succeeding to get to the top. We returned to Beachport, following the same path with out incidence. After a clean up and happy hour at the caravan park, all members patronised the Beachport hotel for a meal & socialising. Sunday at 9.00am we were all ready to do it again, this time heading north to Robe. This run was more challenging than the run south with some difficult climbs off the beach to the tracks through the dunes as well as tight turns back on to the beach We again travelled through National Parks this time the Beachport NP & the Little Dip NP. Traffic was heavier this run with waits to allow vehicles travelling each way. The national Parks are a treasure trove of shrubs, trees grasses and ground covers. No vehicles were bogged on this run but some of the climbs off the beaches were challenges with some taking up to three goes to get off. Travelling along the beach drivers & passengers noticed what appeared to be a bronze statue standing at the waters edge. When the statue “moved” the CB radios crackled with some witty comments. No one is sure what the red thing was protecting the private from sunburn. We lunched and had morning tea at stops along the beach. This coast line is quite spectacular with long sandy beaches as well as rugged coast. There were large numbers either fishing, camping or just enjoying a get together for Australia day along the run. We went through Nora Crenna, a fishermans’ shack area, then back to the tracks and beach, then on to Robe. Most refuelled here, put some air in the tyres, enjoyed a drink and an ice cream, browsed the shops then took the tar back to Beachport for a 5.00pm happy hour. All agreed a top weekend. On the Sunday 4 vehicles carried GPS tracking devices and completed surveys for a Deakin University student who was undertaking research as to why 4 Wheel drivers like to travel the beaches and the economic impact it has for the region. Thanks goes to Allan Mcintyre for leading the days activities and for providing the tips for the newer members
