Mothers in Science
The aim of this book is to illustrate, graphically, that it is perfectly possible to combine a successful and fulfilling career in research science with motherhood, and that there are no rules about how to do this. On each page you will find a timeline showing on one side, the career path of a research group leader in academic science, and on the other side, important events in her family life. Each contributor has also provided a brief text about their research and about how they have combined their career and family commitments. An exhibition celebrating some of Scotland’s finest female scientists www.rse.org.uk All photographs © Ian Georgeson Photography The Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s National Academy, is Scottish Charity No. SC000470 28 29 As Scotland’s National Academy, the Royal Society of Edinburgh is proud to number amongst its Fellowship some of the most talented leaders, thinkers and practitioners working in Scotland today. In this exhibition, we have chosen to focus on and celebrate some of the exceptional women scientists within the Fellowship. Leaders and pioneers in their fi elds, they are at the vanguard of new ideas, new knowledge and new technologies which are shaping our understanding of the world, supporting a more sustainable use of resources and securing advances in health care. Some are from Scotland, others have chosen to base their research and make their homes here; all of them are making a positive contribution to society. When we approached the women to be part of this exhibition, we asked them Seven of the women featured why they chose to become scientists. The responses were varied and enlightening: for some it was always their dream or passion or they had been encouraged and were or are members of the inspired by family, friends and colleagues. For others, the desire to become a RSE Young Academy of scientist came later whilst studying at university and realising that, not only did Scotland. they enjoy and were good at science but, it was also a realistic career choice. And what a career choice! The mixing of circular helicates derived from different amines led to the complete exchange of the N-alkyl residues on the periphery of the metallo-supramolecular scaffolds over 4 days in DMSO at 60 °C. Under similar conditions, deuterium-labeled and nonlabeled building blocks showed full dialdehyde building block exchange over 13 days for open circular helicates but was much slower for the analogous closed-loop pentafoil knot (>60 days). Although both knots and open circular helicates self-assemble under thermodynamic control given sufficiently long reaction times, this is significantly longer than the time taken to afford the maximum product yield (2 days). Highly effective error correction occurs during the synthesis of imine-based pentafoil molecular knots and pentameric circular helicates despite, in practice, the systems not operating under full thermodynamic control. -

news THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF EDINBURGH ISSUE 26 AUTUMN/WINTER 2009 RESOURCE THE NEWSLETTER OF SCOTLAND’ S NATIONAL ACADEMY SCOTLAND’S RESEARCH TALENT In September 2009 over 70 researchers, mostly in the early stages of their careers, were invited to attend the RSE Annual Research Awards Ceremony. The Awards were presented by RSE President, Lord Wilson of Tillyorn, KT GCMG and Professor Alan Miller, RSE Research Awards Convener. Former BP Research Fellow, Professor Miles Padgett, (pictured below right) who held his Fellowship at the University of St Andrews between 1993 and 1995, also addressed the meeting. Professor Padgett now holds a personal Chair in Physics and is head of the Optics Group at the University of Glasgow. He was elected to the Fellowship of the RSE in 2001 and served as Young People’s Convener from 2005 to 2008, remaining an active member of that programme today. Lord Wilson is pictured with Dr Sinead Rhodes from the Department of Psychology, University of St Andrews whose research proposal was granted a small project fund in the Scottish Crucible programme. N. Srikant† Abstract The paper presents a heuristic for mining nurturers in temporally organized collaboration networks: people who facilitate the growth and success of the young ones. Specifically, this heuristic is applied to the computer science bibliographic data to find the best nurturers in computer science research. The measure of success is parameterized, and the paper demonstrates experiments and results with publication count and citations as success metrics. Rather than just the nurturer’s success, the heuristic captures the influence he has had in the indepen- dent success of the relatively young in the network. These results can hence be a useful resource to graduate students and post-doctoral can- didates. The heuristic is extended to accurately yield ranked nurturers inside a particular time period. Interestingly, there is a recognizable deviation between the rankings of the most successful researchers and the best nurturers, which although is obvious from a social perspective has not been statistically demonstrated. Why Dependent Types Matter Thorsten Altenkirch Conor McBride James McKinna The University of Nottingham The University of St Andrews {txa,ctm}@cs.nott.ac.uk [email protected] Abstract We exhibit the rationale behind the design of Epigram, a dependently typed programming language and interactive program development system, using refinements of a well known program—merge sort—as a running example. We discuss its relationship with other proposals to introduce aspects of dependent types into functional programming languages and sketch some topics for further work in this area. 1. Introduction Types matter. That’s what they’re for—to classify data with respect to criteria which matter: how they should be stored in memory, whether they can be safely passed as inputs to a given operation, even who is allowed to see them. Dependent types are types expressed in terms of data, explicitly relating their inhabitants to that data. As such, they enable you to express more of what matters about data. While conventional type systems allow us to validate our programs with respect to a fixed set of criteria, dependent types are much more flexible, they realize a continuum of precision from the basic assertions we are used to expect from types up to a complete specification of the program’s behaviour. It is the programmer’s choice to what degree he wants to exploit the expressiveness of such a powerful type discipline. While the price for formally certified software may be high, it is good to know that we can pay it in installments and that we are free to decide how far we want to go.
