Llyn Gwynant Campsite Information and Regulations Nant Gwynant, North [email protected]

Public Campsite The main public camping area lies beside the river and Llyn Gwynant lake. It is available for use by families, groups or individuals and is open from Easter until the end of October. Tents, camper vans, trailer tents and touring caravans are permitted, but there are restrictions on the number of caravans allowed on site, where they can be sited, and the length of time they are allowed to stay. Caravans are only allowed on Pen Helen. You can see the campsite layout on the website layout page. Bookings are not available or required for normal public camping, unless you are a group of 10 or more. Groups may want to use the special group areas of the site, Cae Hendre, the Barns or Barn field. In this case read our Group information on the website. You can post us a booking using the online booking form. Late arrivals If you arrive at the site later than 10.00pm you must camp near the main car park in the area provided. No cars are to drive onto the campsite fields after this time. Barns Our stone farm buildings, beside Cae Hendre and the Barn field, are available only for pre-booked groups. The barns have electric lights and points, drinking water, basic cooking facilities, refrigerator and freezer. The barns are available only to pre-booked groups, and minimum charges apply. Toilets and facilities A large toilet block at the campsite has separate ladies and mens toilets with basins, hot and cold water, a free hot shower, and electric points. More hot showers, also free to campers, are being built at the back of the block, and will be operational by the high season, 2006. There is also a level entry shower and level entry toilet with baby- changing facilities behind the block, both of which allow wheelchair access. If you bring your own portable toilet/closet and wish to dispose of the contents in our septic tank, you must ensure that the chemical used does not contain formaldehyde, chlorine, bleach or any other corrosive/toxic chemical. We can supply (at cost) a chemical that is 100% biodegradable and septic tank friendly. Dishwashing facilities are provided outside the main toilet block, with hot and cold water, and at the Barns. Drinking Water Our water is taken from mountain streams and purified using ultraviolet light treatment. Water quality is checked regularly by the local council. There are standpipes around the public campsite, placed near to the fire extinguisher boxes, and also at the barns. In peak season we can run seriously short of water so please use water sparingly. Rubbish Disposal Glass and cans must be separated and placed in the special recycling bins provided in the main car park on the public campsite. Rubbish must be put in closed bags, inside the bins at the car park, and is collected regularly from there. Security We do not accept responsibility for the security of your vehicles or belongings whilst on site. Please be sensible and ensure that all valuables, mountain bikes, canoes etc are properly secured at all times.

Camp Fires We allow small campfires on condition these are placed in the raised metal fireboxes provided, and that only wood purchased on site is burnt on site. You must not light fires on the ground, or collect any wood from surrounding farmland or woodland, or bring wood, coal or other combustible materials for fires. These rules are necessary to protect neighbouring woodland including a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Noise This campsite is for the quiet enjoyment of nature. We do not allow radios or stereos on site and have an official 11.00 p.m. curfew. We allow the playing of acoustic instruments only before this time, such as guitars, flutes and fiddles, but not bongo drums! Behaviour We expect all visitors to comply with our regulations, and to show respect for other campers, our staff, and the land. Where the site rules are not respected we reserve the right to refuse admission or ask members of a group to leave the site at any time, subject to repayment of nights unused. Vehicle Access There are access tracks around the public campsite and also some hard-standings/car parks. Bridge field at the back of the site is reserved for car-free camping. Please use common sense when driving on the grass. Minibuses and larger vehicles must park on the hard standings and are not allowed on the grass camping areas. If you have visitors during the day they must park their vehicles in the car park, and may not drive onto the camping fields. All driving on site must be slow, maximum 5 kph / 10mph. Generators We do not allow the use of generators on site. Fire Regulations For fire safety purposes you must ensure that tents in your group are at least three metres apart and at least six metres from any other group’s tents or caravans. Fire points are located at 90 metre intervals around the site.

Dogs We allow dogs on site only if they are kept under proper control at all times – i.e. they must be on a lead or tether or kept inside a vehicle or tent. They must be on a lead if you walk with them off site. You are responsible for clearing up if your dog fouls the site. Adventure Activities The campsite is an ideal venue for outdoor adventure activities such as canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, raft building, river crossings etc. We have small crags on our adjoining land that are ideal for novice single pitch abseiling and rock climbing, as well as areas of mountain and woodland that can be used for orienteering. For conservation and environmental reasons you may not be allowed to carry out certain activities in some areas - you must make arrangements with the manager/warden for any access to areas outside of the campsite. Activities and classes may be available if arranged in advance. Boat Hire We have a selection of kayaks and Canadian canoes for hire. Please ask our wardens about rates and availability. Boat hire may not be available every day, especially outside the peak season. Please note that the level and flow of the Afon Glaslyn fluctuates daily due to a hydroelectric power station upstream. Power Boats We do not allow the use of any motorised craft on the lake or river.

Weather Conditions Due to its location in the bottom of a mountain valley the campsite can be subject to extreme weather conditions. Very strong winds and torrential rain can occur at any time of year with localised flooding. Please ensure that your camping gear is as robust as possible and correctly erected, and avoid pitching in any obvious dips during wet weather. During the high season we post a copy of the mountain weather forecast on the notice board in the toilet block each morning.
