    GALATA, PERA, BEYOĞLU; A BIOGRAPHY Brendan Freely was born in New Jersey in 1959, and in 1960 was moved to Istanbul, where he spent his childhood and adolescence. He studied at Rockwell College in Ireland and at Yale University. Later, he traveled and performed a variety of odd jobs, including a stint with a circus in California, after which he worked as a social-worker in Boston for some years. In 1995 he returned to Istanbul, where he earns his living as a freelance literary translator. John Freely was born in New York in 1926. He joined the U.S. navy at the age of seventeen and served in commando unit in the Pacific, Burma and China for the last two years of World War II. After the war, he graduated from Iona College and received his PhD degree in physics from New York University. In 1960 he moved to Istanbul, where he taught physics, astronomy and the history of science at Robert College, which later became Boğaziçi University. His first book, Strolling Through Istanbul, co-authored with Hilary Sumner-Boyd, was published in 1972. He has written over fifty books, many of them about Turkey. Among his books published by YKY are: A History of Robert College, the American College for Girls and Boğaziçi University (2000) and the 5 volume Türkiye Uygarlıklar Rehberi [Guide to the Civilizations of Turkey] (2002). Turgut Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Yıldız Technical University, Turkey Abstract In an international dimension, Istanbul, an assertive city where the scientific society accepts it to be of universal value, has been claiming its identity as a global city throughout the centuries. The current process of this city, which incorporates many rapid and striking changes, is in jeopardy. In the long run, it is moving towards a point that would threaten the city with rapid and alarming steps. This paper will focus on two projects that constitute two of these steps. It will try to explain the ecological and cultural heritage based threats that these two projects cause for the sustainability of the city. The first one is a project that was currently debated for Istanbul, also a mega transportation project – North Marmara Highway and Third Bosphorus Bridge, and the second one is Golden Horn Subway Transition Bridge, which goes above Golden Horn and is the first subway transition bridge in Turkey. This paper will evaluate the risks and threats, which the first rapidly constructed project creates in the northern parts of the city every day. The second project to be discussed, the Golden Horn Subway Bridge, will be considered with particular regard to its negative effect on the Historical Peninsula and the Süleymaniye silhouette. As a result, considering the risks that these kinds of interferences in the city’s identity could cause in the long run, the fact that the factors leading to the investment decisions are the “capital’s demand” and “projects that are away from scientific acceptance” instead of “sustainability”, “cultural heritage and identity” or “protection-usage balance” will be discussed.

    How History Shapes Place: A Tour of Two Cities Lara Heiberg Lee High School INTRODUCTION As a teacher at Lee High School, the seminar The Middle East: History, Geography, and Culture is appealing in order to both understand some of my students’ cultural history and gain insight to the past that has shaped this often news-making region. Lee High School prides itself on cultural diversity. Though only a small percentage of the student population is Asian, the majority of that group is either South Asian or Southwest Asian. In my regular tenth grade world history classes, Muslim students from various parts of the world experience fasting at Ramadan, attend services Friday afternoons, complain about the lack of Halal cuisine in the cafeteria, and wash themselves in the bathrooms before attending group prayers in designated rooms in the school building. Despite these behaviors that could possibly cause an ethnic or religious group to stand out, the Muslim populations at Lee are greeted with a balance of bewildered acceptance and complacent ignorance by the non-Muslim majority. Lee is an inner city high school with a highly diverse population. Over fifty percent of the students are considered English learners, meaning they are not fluent enough to pass the state required exam. The majority of these students, plus others from English-speaking nations, have been in the country less than ten years. This diversity seems to remove much of the self- consciousness that ethnic groups have in other parts of Houston, but also creates misunderstandings as these groups join together, creating ethnic cliques and circles of friends.

Some years later, in 1871, a sister college, named American College for Girls (called later on Constantinople Woman’s College), was also founded.2 The present paper draws attention to an aspect, which is almost completely neglected in military history, and namely the impact of wars on the civilian population. In particular, the paper will focus on the three wars, in which the Balkan states and the Ottoman Empire were involved during the second decade of the twentieth century (the 1912-1913 Balkan wars and the 1914-1918 World War I), and the impact they had upon the educational activities of the two American Protestant colleges at Istanbul. The paper is based on reports and memoirs written by the presidents of the two colleges, Caleb Frank Gates, the third president of Robert College between 1903 and 1932 (dated August 12, 1913), and Mary Mills Patrick, president of the American College for Girls, named also Constantinople College, between 1890 and 1924 (dated January 30, 1915),3 as well as some Ottoman documental evidences.
