Dear Parishioners,

“God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not perish, but have life eternal.” (John 3:16)

How often have we seen this quote from Scripture held up on signs at sporting events and other occasions? It is a great sentiment, but have we ever pondered what these words truly mean? Th is Jesus that we worship as God has come for a purpose. His purpose is that we may believe in Him and have eternal life. To believe in Jesus, we must be willing to embrace the light that Jesus has come to proclaim. Th ose who reject Him, the Scriptures tell us, prefer the darkness of sin. Th e message is pretty clear - Jesus is the way to salvation. I dare say we all believe that. Yet confusion and the human will can get in the way and begin to blur the line of what is God’s will for us.

One of the misconceptions for us as Catholics is that we can think that salvation is something we can earn by our good works and actions of faith. Th is misconception is that the more “good we do,” the more it will GAIN us heaven. St. Paul tells us the complete opposite. In his letter to the Ephesians we hear, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast (2:8-9).” Our gift of Eternal Life is a free gift from God in Jesus. Our works don’t earn us salvation; yet why are we called to pray, worship, and do acts of kindness and generosity? Well, the good works we do are our response to God’s invitation to love. If we wish to receive the gift of Life Eternal, then we have a responsibility to respond to God by how Jesus has called us to act. It is, like Jesus did with His whole life, a giving over of will to the Father. We pray in Th e Lord’s Prayer each day, “Th y will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Th at will of the Father doesn’t happen without the cooperation of those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. If we have accepted that Jesus died for our sins, then our love for Jesus demands a response. Th at response is how we live our lives. So prayer, worship, living a life of holiness, and giving alms to the poor and needy become not what we do to receive something, but rather what we do BECAUSE WE HAVE RECEIVED SOMETHING. It is the response back in love to the God who has off ered us all things. Our good works, necessary to our salvation, must fi rst spring from the fact that we profess Jesus as Lord. Th ey fl ow from the heart that has embraced Jesus. St. Ignatius of Loyola says it so simply and beautifully, “It is not hard to obey when we love the one whom we obey.”

As we journey through this Lent, let us ask ourselves why we are in Church. Why do we do the good works? Why do we pray? If we see salvation as a reward for actions, then let us purify ourselves of that pride and kneel humbly before God. In that humbleness let us ask for the grace to do the good works simply because they please God and are commanded by Jesus Himself. And may our generous lives refl ect the fact that we are off ered salvation in Jesus by the grace of God and through the power of the Holy Spirit who enlivens our faith.

I encourage all to attend daily Mass and go to confession this Lenten Season. A reminder that Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday in the Church at 7:00 PM.

In these times, we as a parish are fi nding the demands on our resources becoming greater and greater. Please continue to be as generous as you can and let us never forget those in need.

In Jesus, our Suff ering Lord, Fr. Bob

See https://www.usccb.org/saint-joseph. Novena to St. Joseph: March 10-18, 2021 Th e USCCB recalls: “Saint Joseph occupies a special place among the cloud of witnesses in heaven. In the Collect (opening prayer) for the Solemnity of Saint Joseph on March 19th, the Church recalls how he watched over the beginnings of the mysteries of human salvation in the life of Christ. Christ wills to repeat those very same mysteries in our lives. In us, Christ wills to be born, to die, to rise, and to ascend to the Father’s right hand. Saint Joseph, who faithfully cared for the beginnings of these mysteries, faithfully cares for us as these mysteries are perpetuated in our hearts, homes, and communities.” Accordingly, the USCCB has composed a novena to be prayed beginning this Year of St. Joseph and afterwards yearly on March 10th to 18th, the nine days that precede the Solemnity of Saint Joseph on March 19th. Each day of the novena will be accompanied by a refl ection video from bishops across the United States. Th e season of Lent is a time to become acutely aware of how God is calling us. We do not need to look very far to fi nd people to love, feed or inspire. Th ey are most often members of our own family. During these forty days, the Church unites herself to the mystery of Jesus in the desert (CCC 540). Th ere are no temptations or weaknesses that Christ Himself did not experience. For in every respect, He was tested just as we are, yet without sin.

Christ gave us Th e Beatitudes at the Sermon of the Mount to serve as a foundational “charter of the Christian life.” In them, He teaches us how to reorder our lives in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We are called to do these acts, not to be seen, but for the love of God who sees in secret. Remember that it is at the moment of the Beatitudes that the Lord’s Prayer was given to us. Let us pray to know how to receive the gift of God’s grace and love.

Now that all of St. Mary Grade 2 First Reconciliations are complete, we turn our hearts to the joyful preparation of First Holy Communion. We are also preparing our parish Confi rmandi for the sacrament of Confi rmation.

Come Lord Jesus, how we adore thee! - Mrs. Marie Granieri, Director of Religious Education

Church of Saint Mary | 14 “Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day.”

- Pope Francis

Dear Friends: During the special Lenten season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never contributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven’t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of our Parish family to make a donation to the 2021 Appeal. As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised is restricted to support the objectives, programs, and mission that serves more than 600,000 people each year, and our parish shares in the money raised to use for our own local needs. These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with disabilities and our veterans; respect life initiatives; and formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live. But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you! If 100 of our parishioners who have not supported us in the recent past made a $25 contribution this year – think about how many more people we could help! If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others! THANK YOU!!
