At a town meeting, held at School House Hall, in Williams- ville, on the 7th day of March, A. D. 1876, it was voted to have seven hundred copies of the "• History of the Town and Church" published, together with the proceedings at the Cen- tennial Celebration ; and that one copy be furnished, free, to each family in town, the excess to be sold and the proceeds paid into the town treasury. Voted, To have a committee of three appointed to prepare and publish the afoi'esaid history at the expense of the town. Chose as said committee: J.J. Green, Rev. Charles Burnham and J. H. Merrifield. D. A. Dickinson, Town Clerk. PKELIMINARY OBSERVATIONS. In the preparation of this volume, old records have been consulted not only, but thoroughly searched. Some things before in doubt have been settled. Where authorities apparently equally trustworthy have disagreed, we have adopted that view which seemed to have the best evi- dence in its favor, after diligently comparing and sifting the statements made. Notwithstanding all this, it will doubt- less come to pass that some, as they read these pages, will say of certain things here recorded, " I do not believe that, I know that is not so." If the question should be asked, why you so believe, and how you know? perhaps you would say, " We have often heard the old people state these circumstances very difi'crently." True, we have heard all these stories, and, after careful consideration, have leached the results set forth in this volume. To illustrate, one writer says there were but six families in town when the church was organized ; while the biog- rapher of the Morse family sets the number at twenty. A carefid examination of all the conflicting traditions, indicates beyond a reasonable doubt that there were at least fourteen fomilies here in June, 1774, and perhaps twenty. We cannot close these remarks without returning our sincere thanks to the descendants of the early pioneers and all those who, by their hearty co-operation in this enter- prise, have rendered invaluable aid in the researches that have been necessary to complete this volume. RECORD OF THE PROCEEDINGS PREPARATORY TO THE CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OF NEWFANE, JULY 4, 1S74. Fayetteville, /Yt., May iS, 1874. —Agreeable to a notice given out by the acting pastor of the Congregational Church, Rev. Charles Burnham, on the previous Sabbath, the citizens assembled at the vestry of said church, to take into consideration the subject of a Centennial celebration of the organization of the town of Newfane, also of the church, and organized by choosing Rev. Charles Burnham, Chairman, and F. O. Burditt, Secretary. Voted, To hold a town and church celebration. O. T. Ware and J. J. Green were appointed a committee to con- sult \vith citizens in the south part of the town, and invite them to be present and participate at the next meeting. Voted, To adjourn until the evening of the 26th inst., at 7 o'clock. A true record. F. O. Burditt, Sec'y. May 26, 1874. —Met agreeable to adjournment, and the meeting was called to order by the Chairman. The report of the proceedings of the last meeting was read by the Secretary ; also heard the report of the committee appointed at the former meeting to consult with the citizens of the south part of the town. In response to the call of the Chairman, remarks were made by B. E. Morse, S. W. Bowker, D. D. Dickinson, E. P. Wheeler, A. J. Morse and Alexander Fairbanks in fa^or of, and heartily endorsing a centennial celebration. : 10 VoTKi). Voted, Tliat a committee of five be appointed to nomi- nate permanent otVicers, and the committee of arrangements. The nominating committee was constiti'.ted as follows, viz : A. y. Morse, S. \V. Wednesday Evening, May 27, 1S74. —The committee of arrangements met at S. W. Bowker's, at 7 .-30 o'clock, and proceeded to business as follows : Voted, That a committee of three be appointed to make arrangements with the hotel keepers to furnish dinners on the day of celebration. S. W. Bovvker, A. J. Morse and O. T. Ware were chosen such committee. Voted, That S. W. Bowker be the committee to con- sult the Hon. C. K. Field, and procure his services to deliver a historical address at the celebration. Should circumstances prevent his acceptance of the trust, then to procin-e some other person to perform that service. Voted, That the ladies take charge of the arrangements for costumes, and also for the singing. Voted, That the hour for the address be 1 1 o'clock. Voted, To have three Marshals, and S. W. Bowker, Col. A. B. Franklin and Samuel Morse were elected to those positions. Voted, That we meet at 9 o'clock, a. m., at or near the school house in Fayetteville, and form the procession. William T. Bruce w'as appointed a committee to engage a band for the occasion. J. J. Green was appointed a committee to furnish notices of the celebration and procure their insertion in the county papers. Voted, That when we adjourn, it be to meet at Bowles' Hotel two weeks from this evening, (June 9th), at 7 o'clock. Should it be a stormy evening, then to meet on the first pleasant evening after. Hazen was this day put into my hands. Many of the matters mentioned in it are better known to Congress than to myself. The whole are so fully stated, as to speak for themselves, and require only the determination of Congress. The case of the Canadian Officers and Soldiers I know to be peculiarly distressing and truly entitled to redress, if the means are to be obtained. The Regiment, not being appropriated to any State, must soon dwindle into nothing, unless some effectual mode can be devised for recruiting it. Colo. Hazens pretensions to promotion seems to me to have weight, but how far they ought to be admitted, the general principles which Congress mean to adopt for the regulation of this important point will best decide.     1935.] The Famous Dr. Stearns 317 "THE FAMOUS DOCTOR STEARNS" A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF DR. SAMUEL STEARNS WITH A BIBLIOGRAPHY BY JOHN C. L. CLARK' ENJAMIN STEARNS and Dinah Wheeler were B married at Lancaster, in the Massachusetts Bay Province, 11 September, 1738, by the Rev. John Prentice. Benjamin was of Concord, as, too, was Dinah's father, Josiah Wheeler, who migrated to Lancaster about the end of the preceding century. Her mother was Martha Prescott, daughter of John Prescott, Jr., and granddaughter of the founder of Lancaster. The homestead whither Benjamin Stearns came to dwell with his wife's parents lay at the easterly base of Wataquadock Hill, in Bolton, which had been incorporated as a township, from Lancaster territory, in 1738. A path from the door led to the easterly bound "Bay Road"^ running a little to the north of the house. Besides carrying on the farm of a hundred and fifty acres, which his wife inherited from her father three months after their marriage, the husband made, and doubtless mended, shoes, for in deeds he is described as "cordwainer." In one document Mrs. Stearns is called "spinster,"—no meaningless epithet applied to this old-time housewife, among whose possessions when she died were "2 great Wooling Wheels."^ Plenty of wholesome work for the boys and girls born into this New England household! ^Mr. J.C.L. Clark, of Lancaster, Mass., who made a life study of Dr. Samuel Stearns, died at Lancaster, Sept. 6, 1036. «Middlesex Deeds, XXIII, 403. EAST, Executive Director The origins of this Program are to be found in the pros- pectus issued in April 1968 by Professor East of the History faculty of the City University of New York and James E. Mooney, Editor of Publications of the American Antiquarian Society. It was the feeling of both that the imminent anniversary of the Revolution would make such an undertaking an impera- tive of historical scholarship, for an understanding of the Rev- olution would be necessarily incomplete and inevitably dis- torted without the full story of the American Loyalists. It was the hope of both that the work could go forward under the joint sponsorship of both institutions, and this was quickly gained. The next step was to canvass the scholarly community in England, Canada, and the United States to learn of its reac- 67 68 American Antiquarian Society tions. The prospectus was written, handsomely printed by Alden Johnson of the Barre Publishers, and sent out to a number of scholars, archivists, and others. Thomas J. Condon ofthe American Council of Learned Societies early took a cheering interest in the proj- ect and pledged the cooperation of his august organization to advance the work.

    The Fourteenth State Benjamin Hall’s history of eastern Vermont Tyler Resch Benjamin H. Hall’s “History of Eastern Vermont” is an odd book to find on the history shelves. It is heavy and extremely long (799 pages), very readable, and includes biographies, sketches, and early documents. But it does make you wonder: why would anyone write a history of only eastern Vermont? Besides its geographic tilt and its heft, the book has a thesis to present. It strongly reflects the pro-New York attitude that was prevalent in eighteenth-century Windsor and Windham counties (then known as Cumberland County). What also struck me after some research was the extreme youth of the author. He began the book when he was 22, in 1852, the year after he graduated from Harvard. It was published in 1858 by Appleton & Co. in New York. Benjamin Homer Hall was born in Troy, N.Y., in 1830, and was prepared for college in private schools and Phillips Andover Academy before entering Harvard. His intense interest in early eastern Vermont might be traced to the fact of his father’s birth in 1787 in Westminster, which boasts that it was the first town chartered in Vermont, in 1735 (by Massachusetts, when it was joined with New Hampshire). Hall’s father, Daniel, graduated from Middlebury. Both Halls were lawyers in Troy where their practice was carried out in an ornate downtown edifice built in 1871 called the Hall Building (now known as the Rice Building). For those fascinated by what happened within each town during the most intense time of controversy between New Hampshire and New York, Hall offers extensive and delicious local detail town by town – Windham and Windsor (Cumberland) towns only – with personal data on many early settlers.

The activities of commercial, and the blandishments of social life, the mad race for wealth and the pathetic struggle for the necessities of daily existence, the indifference of many to everything outside and beyond their own personal and narrow circle, and the lack of opportunity in others have, until quite recently, made the work of the genealogist an exceptional and unappreciated labor. When men are concerned only about their present condition and individual interests, caring nothing for ancestry or posterity, they live in a very small world, and, like the squirrel playing in its cage, fancy they are happy. But that which now is, is the result of what has been. " No man liveth unto himself and no man dieth unto himself " was the conclusion of an ancient and revered philosopher, and he who cares nothing for those whose transmitted name he bears, and who have written that name high up among the records of of the race, is lacking in the essentials of a self-respecting manhood. And the world has too many of this sort of people.
