Scope and Content of the South Dakota National Guard Historical Resource Collection (SDNGHRC)

The South Dakota National Guard Historical Resource Collection (SDNGHRC), housed in the Beulah Williams Library Archives at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, is one of the largest collections of primary source collections in the state related to the militia and National Guard of South Dakota. Among the items included in the SDNGHRC are some 100 oral history interviews with South Dakota National Guard veterans who served in all of the nation’s conflicts from the Spanish-American War of 1898-99 to the Berlin Crisis of 1961-62, a manuscript collection dating from 1861 containing documents related to various South Dakota National Guard units and individuals, a large collection of photographs and drawings, a variety of films related to South Dakota National Guard units, and various and sundry pieces of South Dakota National Guard memorabilia.

The SDNGHRC was established in 1977 through the cooperative efforts of Northern State University and MG Duane Corning, then Adjutant General of the State of South Dakota. The materials of the SDNGHRC are the property of the people of South Dakota and are open to all qualified persons who are engaged in research projects related to the military history of the state or nation.
