Volume 9 / Issue 1 Words from the Rabbi... Rosh Hashanah begins on Sunday evening October 2nd and I am certain many of us have heard that the “Holidays are occurring late this year.” Indeed, we often joke that they are either late or early but, somehow, never on time. In truth, according to the Jewish calendar, they come at just the right time every year.

Even so, the notion that the date changes from year to year on our secular calendar provides a potent message. A prime theme of the High Holidays is that every year we have an opportunity to do Teshuvah, to renew ourselves and return to a better us; we have the ability to hit the reset button of our lives. Additionally, because the secular date changes year to year, it forces us to pay attention to when the Holidays arrive. This forced awareness puts each of us in a good position to give early consideration to the work we need to do in order to change for the better.

It is the gift of annual renewal.

But what do we need to do? Change is never simple, and often we complicate things by trying to do too much, or to be too perfect, or to over-think what needs to be done. I find that success often comes after we simplify things. I suggest two initial common-sense paths of attention. First, we should each work on being kind to ourselves. Secondly, we should work on being kind to others. We should begin this two-pronged task immediately. This suggestion comes from none other than Hillel who said at Pirkei Avot 1:14: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself who am I? If not now, when?”

There are many ways we can be kind to ourselves. We can begin by caring for our bodies. Eat healthy, sleep more, don’t smoke, de-stress. But being kind to our selves does not end with physical care. We need to treat ourselves with respect, and we need to seek healthy relationships. Look in the mirror and say, “I like what I see,” or “I like ______about myself.”

Once we have begun the process of taking care of our selves, we can then begin to be kind to others. Our tradition provides a system for this as well. We call it Gemilut Hasadim, “the giving of Loving Kindness.” To accomplish this, we are given a number of specific tasks: 1) Bikkur Cholim, visiting and tending to the needs of those who are sick; 2) Nichum Avelim, comforting mourners; 3) Hachnasat Orchim, providing hospitality; 4) Social welfare, i.e. caring for the orphan, widow, stranger, and poor; and 5) Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.

There is a simpler way to treat others kindly as well. By simply doing random acts of kindness, we treat others better. I learned the following meditation from a source that I cannot recall -- however, using it might be helpful to us in treating others with kindness:

May this person be safe. May this person be happy. May this person be healthy. May this person live with greater ease.

Lest you have the notion that the person next to you is not worthy of your kind consideration, recall what the Hasidic Rabbi Wolf of Strikov taught: “Remember that you are not as good as you think you

Continued on Page 14 2 Volume 10 / Issue 1 From the Heart... I have spent many hours glued to the TV watching the Olympics – who thought I would be watching women’s beach volleyball at midnight? In truth, it gave me an opportunity to talk to my young grandsons about where is, and why American fencer, Ibtihaj Muhammad, was wearing a hijab, a head scarf, while she was competing. That led to a discussion of other religions where women cover their heads: Orthodox Jews, Mennonites -- and why. The games bring the world into focus, and we are all intrigued by it.

6 Volume 10 / Issue 1 JCC to Honor Donald & Judith Pripstein at Selichot Services Selichot are recited from the Sunday before Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur. If Rosh Hashanah begins on a Monday, as it does this year, then Selichot begins on the Sunday of the week before Rosh Hashanah -- to make sure that there are at least three days of Selichot. This year, the Selichot service will be on Saturday evening, September 24, at 7:30pm. It is traditional to change the mantels (covers) on the Torahs during this service. This year, we will be honoring Past President, Don Pripstein, for his eight years at the helm of our congregation. Under his leadership, we built a new and beautiful building and have grown in numbers and prestige. Judith has been by his side, giving him counsel, and she has also created two new beautiful High Holiday mantels and wimples for our new Torahs.

It is also traditional for there to be a sermon or learning session at Selichot. The JCC will be showing the Woody Allen film, Crimes and Misdemeanors, followed by a discussion led by Rabbi Michael Jay. Please join us! Children’s Rabbis Garden Becomes a Reality Dedication Scheduled for Sunday, September 11th

The Rabbis Garden, the project of students of the JCC of LBI Hebrew School -- past and present -- has become a reality under the leadership of Hebrew School Director Lynn Berkowitz. The bench was the gift of Marcia Nelson and Family in honor of her husband and their father and grandfather, Dr. Mortimer Nelson. Flowers and planters were the gift of Maxine Paris. The pergola is being funded by students’ donations. On Sunday, September 11, prior to the Religious School’s Open House, the Garden will be dedicated to the JCC of LBI’s rabbis --- past, present, and future. 10 Volume 10 / Issue 1 In Sisterhood News... This is an article written by Rochelle Spencer, which I feel captures the essence of our Sisterhood: Through the influence and suggestion of my dear friend, Vivian Fitts Z”L, I have embraced the position of Corresponding Secretary of the JCC pf LBI Sisterhood. This position is important because I feel it is necessary to acknowledge those who offer of themselves to add and enhance the JCC community. I cannot imagine not belonging to the Sisterhood. Over the years, I have met many wonderful, strong, compassionate people. Because of the Sisterhood, I have forged many beautiful friendships. With each of these I have memories that make me laugh, make me cry, and make me cry from laughter. The Sisterhood is a bond that has influenced me, and I hope that I have influenced the Sisterhood as well. It’s testimonies like this that made Carole, Lexa and me take the Sisterhood helm on June 2, knowing that we not only owed it to Vivian to keep the Sisterhood afloat, but that the rest of you “Sisters” would also be by our side. Give a group of ladies a challenge and great things happen! Although we didn’t have quite as many events as in past summers, what we did have were great successes, and that’s because of you! There is nothing more important that the wonderful volunteers who give from the heart, and we thank you all who help make the Sisterhood successful. As we move forward toward 5777, we look forward to working with all of our sisters and brothers for new and wonderful events to come! Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and sweet new year -- Shana Tova Umetuka -- Shalom -- Jody, Carole & Lexa
