02 www.vfl .com.au Football aids female fi tness Australian football has the unique ability to infl uence diff erent trends in the community. We have seen the role it can play in encouraging social change in the fortnight leading up to Multicultural Round, and it was further evident during the week with the launch of VicHealth’s Changing the Game: Increasing Female Participation in Sport program. AFL Victoria was one of six sporting organisations to share in $1.8 million of funding to work with women and girls who don’t normally participate in traditional sports programs that are provided through clubs and competitions. We will play a major role in helping to achieve the program’s target to get 25,000 women and girls across Victoria physically active over the next two years. Our focus will be on a new program called ‘AFL Active’, which is a group fi tness session to improve women’s health and wellbeing. It is based on AFL training techniques and designed to use activities that combine the unique AFL-specifi c fi tness components of endurance, speed, strength, agility and dynamic movement. While a primary focus of AFL Victoria will always be on participation in the game, we see this new program as a great way for our sport to involve women away from the traditional football fi eld. It was great to have Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) representatives in Elise O’Dea and Aasta O’Connor at the launch, with both preparing not only for the upcoming VWFL fi nals but also the second AFL Women’s Exhibition game for 2015. The best female footballers from across Australia – with over 50 per cent coming from the VWFL - will take centre stage at Etihad Stadium in the fourth AFL Women’s Exhibition game between the and Melbourne this Sunday, as a curtain-raiser to the AFL men’s game between the two clubs. In a fi rst for women’s football, Channel 7 will broadcast the game live from Etihad Stadium from 12.30pm with Peter Jackson VFL host Jason Bennett and AFL Victoria’s own Chyloe Kurdas as part of the call team. It is a great opportunity to see the best players from the VWFL play on national television, before many of them swap their AFL jumpers for local club colours in the VWFL fi nals series. This Saturday will see the start of a big month and a half of fi nals for AFL Victoria’s premier competitions, starting with fi ve divisions in the VWFL (Division 2, 3, 4, West and East) and concluding with the Peter Jackson VFL and TAC Cup Grand Finals at Etihad Stadium on Sunday September 27. The VFL is enjoying one of its closest seasons yet, with the makeup of the top eight teams still not decided and the double chance to be hotly contested over the remaining three rounds. In the TAC Cup, school football has concluded for another year, and those players will be returning to the fi eld to strengthen a number of teams on the run home. Vic Country’s dominance at the U18 Championships is refl ected in the ladder, with the North Ballarat Rebels, Murray Bushrangers and Dandenong Stingrays the teams at the top. We look forward to exciting times ahead across all our competitions. Steven Reaper AFL Victoria CEO www.taccup.com.au 03 LLochie’sochie’s nnewew lleaseease oonn lifelife

06 www.vfl .com.au Plapp’s balancing act First-year Casey Scorpions coach Justin Plapp says trying to balance the interests within an AFL-aligned VFL club has made 2015 his most challenging year in the coaching caper. But despite switching to the Peter Jackson VFL aft er three years coaching the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup, Casey’s results would indicate the former Richmond and St Kilda player has been handling the situation well. Following a 5-13 season in 2014, the Scorpions sit in eighth position with three rounds to play and have their fi nals destiny in their own hands, needing one win to secure a September berth. Plapp said the improvement was in part due to Casey’s VFL-listed players and Melbourne’s AFL-listed players adopting a “one club” mentality. “What we mean by that is when we play on the weekend, we’ve all got the same interests, we’ve all got the same level of respect, and our vision of the way we want to play is very similar,” Plapp said. “It certainly has been the most challenging year (of my coaching career); it’s just based around the relationships, how you manage the players and how you get them buying into each other, respecting and caring for each other. “I’ve had to think really laterally about it at times.”

www.taccup.com.au dadairyayaustralia.com.au/legegen19dairyy The truth about dairy foods, healthy muscles and your weight

If you’re including resistance training in your workout, you already know the importance of building healthy muscle mass – not only for improving your performance, but also in managing your weight by keeping your metabolism fi ring. But your exercise routine is only one piece of the puzzle – to maximise results, you need to make sure your food choices are supporting all your hard work. There’s a secret weapon to help you and it’s probably already in your fridge.

The Legendairy edge Some foods are natural stars when it comes to building healthy muscle while keeping body fat low. The latest research shows three serves of dairy foods like milk, cheese and yogurt a day, as part of a calorie controlled diet, can improve weight loss, reduce body fat and reduce waist circumference. Wondering what’s so special about dairy foods? • The high-quality protein in dairy foods supports the maintenance of metabolism-boosting lean muscle; • The calcium in dairy foods may reduce the amount of dietary fat absorbed by the body; and • Dairy foods like milk, cheese and yogurt can help you feel fuller for longer and reduce feelings of hunger.

Weight loss and dairy foods – the facts If you’ve been avoiding dairy foods in an eff ort to lose weight, you’re missing out on these benefi ts. And if you’re trying to maintain your current weight, dairy can also help. The evidence review underpinning the 2013 Australian Dietary Guidelines found no link between eating milk, cheese and yogurt and weight gain or risk of obesity in adults. Making sure you meet your recommendations (see legendairy.com.au/lifestage) from the dairy food group means you’re giving your body the benefi t of their natural package of protein, essential vitamins and minerals.

Fuel up and recover with dairy Start your day with a smoothie, yogurt and fruit or a milky coff ee for the essential nutrients and energy you need to fuel up. End a workout with a fl avoured milk or DIY protein shake using skim milk or whey protein powder. For more ways to start and end your day with dairy, visit www.legendairy.com.au/ recipes.
