    By Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen Manufacturer of Insignia, Honours and Awards Thomas Fattorini Ltd Birmingham History of the Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt Originally introduced by Hugh Lowther (5th Earl of Lonsdale) in 1909, the Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt is the oldest belt to be awarded in the sport of Boxing. As the first President of the National Sporting Club, Lord Lonsdale launched the belt as the new prize trophy for the British Champion at each weight division. The first being won in 1909 by Freddie Welsh - Lightweight. Hugh Lowther (5th Earl of Lonsdale) Fattorini “Britain’s most experienced badgemaker” “Bombardier” Billy Wells from London’s East End was the first British Heavyweight to win the Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt back in 1911 where he defeated Ian Hague with a knockout in the sixth round. He defended the title thirteen times, a record that stood for many years, before losing against Joe Beckett in Freddie Hall Thomas February 1919. The Lord Lonsdale (AKA Freddie Welsh) Challenge Lonsdale Belt that he won was the original heavyweight belt and is crafted from 22 carat gold. It is reported this belt is kept at The Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, South East London. (not on display to the general public). A total of 22 Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belts were issued by the National Sporting Club until the British Boxing Board of Control began it’s governance in 1929 and began Billy Wells (AKA The Bombadier) awarding the belts. The belts then became the property of any champion who won three title fights in a division.

He could not read or write, but developed into clever boxer. His early boxing career was spent fighting in fairground booths. Professional career He began boxing professionally in 1899. In November 1903 he won the vacant British bantamweight title and in December of the same year he won the British flyweight title, but the titles were not recognised by the British Boxing Board of Control until 1909. In October 1910, he fought Joe Bowker for the British and European bantamweight titles. He scored an eighth-round knockout to secure the titles. Stanley was also recognised by the National Sporting Club as the holder of the World bantamweight title, although he was not recognised as such in America. In December 1910, he defended his British title against Johnny Condon, winning on points. In September 1911, he defended it again, against Ike Bradley, again winning on points. In April and June 1912, he defended his European title twice against the Frenchman, Charles Ledoux. He won the first fight in Covent Garden on points, but lost the second fight in Dieppe, being knocked out in the seventh round. In October 1912, he successfully defended his British title against Alex Lafferty, winning on points.

    Museum of English Rural Life THE ROBERT DAWSON ROMANY COLLECTION D BD Collection of material relating to Gypsies and Travellers including research and writings by Dawson, presscuttings, material relating to Gypsy Societies and Gypsies and government legislation, teaching packs, publications including reports and academic papers, sheet music, illustrative material including photographs, drawings, posters, postcards and cigarette cards and plans of caravans. In this catalogue many of the record titles and descriptions have been recorded exactly as they were labelled in the past. Descriptive terms used in historical records may be considered derogatory or offensive today but reflect the attitudes and language of the time. The terminology used by the people that created the records is part of the story they tell. Where the Archivist has created a new record title or description, the terms Gypsy or Traveller have been used. The Collection covers the year’s 1870-2001. The physical extent of the collection is 32 boxes.
