Finding Aid to Documents for the BANC MSS M-A 1 2 history of Mexico, circa 1524-1855 Related Collections Documents from the AGN also appear in two other collections: Account book for sugar plantation, 1693-1698 (BANC MSS M-A 2) and Documents relating to the Juzgado de Indios, 1580-1820 (BANC MSS M-A 3). Because of the nature of these collections, it was not possible to integrate them into the regular AGN group. Indexing Terms The following terms have been used to index the description of this collection in the library's online public access catalog. Catholic Church--Mexico Yucatan (Mexico : State)--History Mexico--Church history Scholes, France Vinton, 1897- Archivo General de la Nacion (Mexico) Arrangement Documents which were copied in the Archivo General de la Nación (AGN), Mexico City, by methods other than microfilm are listed in this finding aid. The copies were made primarily during the period from 1920 to 1945. The transcripts are mostly typed, with a few copies made by hand. The prints were, for the most part, enlarged from nitrate film. In some cases, the nitrate has been replaced by safety film; in others, the nitrate was destroyed because it was hazardous. Professors Woodrow Wilson Borah and France Vinton Scholes were largely responsible for these documents having come to the Bancroft Library. In the late 1940's The Bancroft Library, guided by Professor George P. Hammond, began a program of microfilming in Mexico and Spain, and some of the materials in this collection are also available on microfilm. No attempt has been made to correlate the modern microfilm to the paper copies. The use of the microfilm notebooks and this guide together would make such a correlation possible. The documents in the collection have been checked against Herbert Eugene Bolton's Guide to Materials for the History of the United States in the Principal Archives of Mexico. The arrangement of ramos follows that of the AGN. In addition, within the ramo, documents are identified with tomo or legajo number, and expediente, folio, or date to provide a citation to the original source. Documents, unless otherwise marked, are transcripts. The number of provincial strikes recorded in the forestry and agricultural industries and complied by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare constitute the primary source of the study. Based on this information, maps of the regional and provincial distribution of the agricultural unrest have been created for the republican period. The results reveal that, contrary to the traditional belief which confines the rural unrest of this period to the geographic areas of the latifundios (large estates), Spanish agriculture, in all its diversity, was hit by collective disputes. Although the areas of the latifundios were most affected by the agricultural reform of 1932, the data show that the extension of the unrest in the Spanish countryside was also the result of the refusal of the landowners to accept and apply the new republican collective bargaining agreement. The number of strikes increased during the period 1931–1933, fell between 1934 and 1935, and increased again during the months of the Popular Front (February to July 1936).

The Road/rom Nacogdoches to Natchitoches: John Sprowl & the Failed Fredonian Rebellion By RICK SHERROD bit more than one hundred miles ofthe old EI Camino Real separated Natchitoches, the most important Aninetccnth century town in northwest Louisiana, from Nacogdoches, the oldest continuously inhabited city within the currcnt borders ofTexas. The story ofeach city's founding is rooted in a fascinating (iffanciful) Caddo legend about twin brothers. To forestall any future conflict between the families of his two sons, a Caddo chief instructed the twins to depart their tribal home on the Sabine. The brother "Natchitoches" traveled three days toward the rising sun while the other twin, HNacogdoches," journeyed three days to the west. In each respective location, both men raised their families and developed settlements. With sufficient insulation to prevent frictions over rights to hunting grounds, "the two brothers remained friendly and the road between the two communities was well traveled."1 Regular nlovement between the two settlements continued long after the Indian population of the area had vanished.
