  • Australian Films
AUSTRALIAN FILMS: The Rage in Placid Lake Just out of prep school -- where he was the target of tyrannical bullies -- misfit teen Placid Lake (Ben Lee) yearns to be a regular Joe. When a mishap lands Placid in a body cast for months, he formulates a plan to reinvent himself by donning a suit and taking a job as a drone at an insurance agency. But he soon discovers that conformity isn't what it's cracked up to be in this offbeat Aussie comedy from rookie director Tony McNamara. Strictly Ballroom This quirky, tenderly hilarious romantic comedy is sure to leave you tapping your toes. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, Strictly Ballroom is the off-beat story of a championship ballroom dancer (Paul Mercurio) who breaks all the rules by choosing an ugly duckling dancing partner (Tara Morice). Sweet, funny and original, this is one you won't forget quickly. The Castle When plans for an airport expansion threaten the home of Darryl Kerrigan (Michael Caton) and his family, the patriarch refuses to move from his "castle" -- in actuality, a shabby suburban tract house. Darryl rallies the troops and takes his battle to the highest court in Australia. This irreverent, warm-hearted comedy is frequently compared to The Full Monty. The Dish July 1969. Neil Armstrong is about to walk on the moon, and everyone's eyes are riveted to their TV screens. In Parkes, Australia, a radio dish antenna is slated to receive Apollo 11's video feed and send that historic sight out to the world … that is, if the Australian staff (including pipe-smoking, absent-minded scientist Sam Neill) and their NASA supervisor (the tense, by-the-book Patrick Warburton) don't make any mistakes! Rabbit Proof Fence Australia's aboriginal integration program of the 1930s broke countless hearts -- among them, those of young Molly (Evelyn Sampi), Gracie (Laura Monaghan) and Daisy (Tiana Sansbury), who were torn from their families and placed in an abusive orphanage.

Creating a Scene: The Role of Artists’ Groups in the Development of Brisbane’s Art World 1940-1970 Judith Rhylle Hamilton Bachelor of Arts (Hons) University of Queensland Bachelor of Education (Arts and Crafts) Melbourne State College A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2014 School of English, Media Studies and Art History ii Abstract This study offers an analysis of Brisbane‘s art world through the lens of artists‘ groups operating in the city between 1940 and 1970. It argues that in the absence of more extensive or well-developed art institutions, artists‘ groups played a crucial role in the growth of Brisbane‘s art world. Rather than focusing on an examination of ideas about art or assuming the inherently ‗philistine‘ and ‗provincial‘ nature of Brisbane‘s art world, the thesis examines the nature of the city‘s main art institutions, including facilities for art education, the art market, conservation and collection of art, and writing about art. Compared to the larger Australian cities, these dimensions of the art world remained relatively underdeveloped in Brisbane, and it is in this context that groups such as the Royal Queensland Art Society, the Half Dozen Group of Artists, the Younger Artists‘ Group, Miya Studios, St Mary‘s Studio, and the Contemporary Art Society Queensland Branch provided critical forms of institutional support for artists. Brisbane‘s art world began to take shape in 1887 when the Queensland Art Society was founded, and in 1940, as the Royal Queensland Art Society, it was still providing guidance for a small art world struggling to define itself within the wider network of Australian art.

TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH MICHEL GONDRY Michel Gondry is one of the most creative contemporary directors, known for his astonishingly inventive style that combines complex technological innovation with an almost childlike playfulness, and an ability to move fluidly between dream and reality. Gondry has directed feature films (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind, The Science of Sleep), documentaries (Dave Chappelle's Block Party), music videos for Bjork, Radiohead, The White Stripes, and Daft Punk, and numerous award-winning commercials. He is also an installation artist who has been featured at Deitch Projects. In this conversation with Chief Curator David Schwartz, Gondry discusses his remarkable career. • Masculine Caregivers in Australian Children's Fictions 1953-2001
Chapter 3 Literary Reconfigurations of Masculinity I: Masculine caregivers in Australian children's fictions 1953-2001 'You're a failure as a parent, Joe Edwards!' Mavis Thorpe ClarkThe Min-Min (1966:185) It is easy to understand why men who grew up at a time when their fathers were automatically regarded as the head of the household and the breadwinner should feel rather threatened by the contemporary challenge to those central features of traditional masculine status ... Hugh Mackay Generations (1997:90) As cultural formations produced for young Australian readers, the children's fictions discussed in this chapter offer a diachronic study of literary processes employed to reconfigure schemas of adult masculinities.1 The pervasive interest in the transformation of Australian society's public gender order and its domestic gender regimes in the late twentieth century is reflected in children's fictions where reconfigurations of masculine subjectivities are represented with increasing narrative and discursive complexity. The interrogation of masculinity—specifically as fathering/caregiving—shifts in importance from a secondary level story in post-war realist fictions to the focus of the primary level story by the century's end. Thematically its significance changes too, from the reconfigurations of social relations in the domestic sphere that subverts the doxa of patriarchal legitimacy, to narratives that problematise masculinity in the public gender An earlier version of this chapter is published in Papers: Explorations into Children's Literature, 9: 1 (April 1999): 31-40. order. From the mid-1960s, feminist epistemologies provide the impetus for the first reconfiguration in the representations of fathering masculinities that challenges traditional patriarchy.

  • The Development of Fantasy Illustration in Australian Children's Literature
The University of Tasmania "THE SHADOW LINE BETWEEN REALITY AND FANTASY": THE DEVELOPMENT OF FANTASY ILLUSTRATION IN AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Degree for Master of Education. Centre of Education by Irene Theresa Gray University of Tasmania December 1985. Acknowledgments I wish to thank the following persons for assistance in the presentation of this dissertation: - Mr. Hugo McCann, Centre for Education, University of Tasmania for his encouragement, time, assistance and critical readership of this document. Mr. Peter Johnston, librarian and colleague who kindly spent time in the word processing and typing stage. Finally my husband, Andrew whose encouragement and support ensured its completion. (i) ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to show that accompanying a development of book production and printing techniques in Australia, there has been a development in fantasy illustration in Australian children's literature. This study has identified the period of Australian Children's Book Awards between 1945 - 1983 as its focus, because it encompassed the most prolific growth of fantasy-inspired, illustrated literature in Australia and • world-wide. The work of each illustrator selected for study either in storybook or picture book, is examined in the light of theatrical and artistic codes, illustrative traditions such as illusion and decoration, in terms of the relationships between text and illustration and the view of childhood and child readership. This study. has also used overseas literature as "benchmarks" for the criteria in examining these Australian works. This study shows that there has been a development in the way illustrators have dealt with the landscape, flora and fauna, people, Aboriginal mythology and the evocation and portrayal of Secondary Worlds.
