The Link. National Catholic Scout Fellowship Page 3 From Bishop Richard...

Whenever we turn on our televisions, Syria and the situation in that part of the Middle East, dominates the news. As I write, Egypt is facing fresh difficulties. The conflict in Afghanistan continues and we must hope and pray that the conversations that are now beginning to take place will form the basis of new hope and life for the people there.

As members of the National Catholic Scout Fellowship, we must be people whose minds and hearts go beyond what is immediately around us. We may not be in a position to effect major changes ourselves, but we can – and must – keep in prayer and thought those people who find themselves living with danger and fear on a daily basis.

Whenever we gather as Scouts, let us pray for the troubled parts of the world – not just once in a while, but every time we meet. When opportunities for offering aid come our way, let us respond to them. Every little helps and, by offering our aid through the trusted agencies of the Church, we can be sure our efforts will have an effect.

You may wish to share this prayer with others in Scouting:

Lord of all mercy, give us your peace. Teach us to cherish everyone as our brothers and sisters. Strengthen us to obey your will, for in your will is our peace. Grant all nations great good will and true and lasting peace, you who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

With the assurance of my prayers for you all and with every Blessing,

Page 4 Summer 2013 Anniversaries and Celebrations...

We seem to be at a time of anniversaries and celebrations at the moment.

We should always remember what they represent. For some it will mark an individual milestone in their life or an achievement. It may be the recognition by others of that or just the inner reflection and satisfaction of a job well done.

For others it will be collective celebration of some special moment.

Regardless of the circumstances it is important that these are shared and valued by all—family and friends alike.

On the collective front recently we have marked the 100th anniversary of the foundation 2nd Hinckley Scout Group in Leicestershire. In this issue we have details of the activities to mark the 65th anniversary of The Bishop’s Own, Wrexham.

We also congratulate 13th St Michael’s Scout Group, Chatham, Kent as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of their formation.

Unfortunately this issue did not get out in time to invite you to join the 2nd Shirley Scout Group at their anniversary camp to celebrate 50 years. However, Fr John did join them and hopefully between him and the group’s leaders we should have something for you to read in the next issue of The Link.

On a more personal front we are aware that a certain bishop is celebrating the 60th anniversary of his ordination. Our congratulations go to Bishop Howard Tripp. You’ll remember him from his time as our liaison bishop.

I’m sure that there are many other anniversaries and celebrations out there in Catholic Scouting that for one reason or another slip under the radar so congratulations to each and every one of you, you deserve it. However, if you know about them why not let us know!

The Link. National Catholic Scout Fellowship Page 5 The Manager’s thoughts...

Is there anybody out there!!! The reason I ask this question is that we never seem to hear from some of you and I am sure that you must have lots of events and adventures to tell us. We always welcome your stories and as this is really your publication it would be good to have more news of what you are up to. As you will see in this publication we have groups who are celebrating notable milestones in their lives.

If you recall last year we had the 100 th anniversary of the formation of the 2 nd Hinckley group and so far no one has claimed that record. In this publication we have groups we are celebrating 65, 50 and 30 years respectively. I am sure that there must be more groups who have achieved memorable dates in their history. We are always eager to hear from you, so please do not hide your light under a bushel - let us know of your success and we can tell others and celebrate your success in that way.

I saw from the St George’s Day Awards publication that some of our members had received awards. On behalf of the NCSF I would like to offer them our congratulations. Perhaps they will let us have pictures of their award ceremony for our publication – we will wait and see what develops.

I asked in the last edition of The Link for your comments on the best day for our Scouting Mass at St George’s Cathedral in Southwark but as no one has contacted me I have gone ahead and booked the Cathedral for Sunday 2 nd March at 3 p.m. All are invited and I can confirm that the Imperial War Museum will be open.

We also have been able to find a venue for a Mass to be held in Manchester and details, once the date has been agreed, will be on our Website and in the next edition of The Link. Some Groups use this event to present their members with awards i.e. Chief Scout Award for the Scouts and for the Guides the Baden Powell Award. Some use this special Mass to invest new leaders - so why not use it to make a special presentation even more special for your group.

Page 6 Summer 2013 . Our Annual Review, before Active Support Units it was called the AGM, is being held from 18 – 20 October in Birmingham. Full details and booking form can be found in this edition of The Link. Please do make an effort to join us for this event; it would be good to see some new faces and to hear what you have to say about us! Please do give it some thought, the NCSF have heavily subsidised this event to make it more accessible for members. Perhaps your District might like to contribute to your attendance. The Annual Review is open to all members and that could include your young leaders who I am sure would find the weekend most interesting: the main speaker is our own Bishop Richard Moth.

The school holidays are now looming large on the horizon and I know that many will now be getting ready for their annual summer camp. I hope that you camps are successful and that, despite the weather, you manage to develop your friendships within your groups and that your young people come home having not only learned new skills but have become better human being. I also hope that you have managed to make time for God on your camps and to try where possible to get your troop or pack to Mass. Do not forget that we have a National Chaplain who given enough warning would be only too pleased to come and celebrate Mass for you, or if he couldn’t he might know a man who could!

Happy camping and do not forget to let us have some piccies of your camp. I look forward to perhaps seeing some of you at Gilwell – do come and visit us at the Swan Centre where we will be along with the other faiths.

Page 12 Summer 2013 Bishop’s Own at Bangoree!...

The sun shone brightly all weekend during the Clwyd Area camp “Bangoree”! Bishop’s Own Cubs and Scouts made the best of the lovely weather with BBQs and ice-cream while completing the exciting activities that had been organised – everything from zumba dancing to go-carts, from shooting to bouncing on the giant inflatable’s; it truly was a weekend of adventure!

Bishop’s Own Scout Group have some exciting news this summer... it is their 65th Birthday!

In 1948, the then Bishop of Wrexham, Bishop Petit asked Canon Cyril Schwarz to set up a Scout Group in his name... and that is exactly what happened! Things have moved on a long way since then as the Group goes from strength to strength but the same spirit of Scouting Adventure is still alive and well especially as Bishop’s Own plan their Birthday celebrations over the summer months as they reflect on the great times of the past and look forward the exciting plans for the future.

th Scouting loses a dedicated stalwart. 30 July 1918 – 14 January 2013

Harold Burgess died in Worthing Hospital Monday 14 th January aged 94. Harold was a Scout in the late 1920s in the 1 st Villiers Scout Troop in Southall London. He started his adult service in the Ealing and Hanwell District in London in 1946 following a letter from his mother whilst serving in the army after the Second World War, asking whether he would be interested in joining the Scouts after the war.

His military service started in 1938 and went on until 1947, he was in the Royal Artillery and the Royal Army Service Corp and served in France, North Africa and Palestine. In the British Expeditionary Force he was evacuated out of France from St.Malo after the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940.

Harold also commenced his post war paid employment for Blaker’s Ltd at this time, a welding company based in Acton London and later in Dial Post near Ashington in West Sussex, which he would work for a period of more than 50 years before his retirement in 1995.

Harold roles in Scouting have been numerous since1946. In the 20 th Ealing (St. Benedict’s) Scout Troop he was Scout Leader, Venture Scout Leader and Group Scout leader. He annually ran successful two week camps and provided an exciting programme for the development of the numerous Scouts he was responsible for including Group shows that were well liked by both the Scouts and the local community. He had also been during time a Assistant District Commissioner and District Scout Leader.

Blaker Welding asked Harold and his family to move to West Sussex in 1975 and so following his arrival in Worthing Harold took up Scouting in this area this time as a District Scout Leader doing a similar role to the one he had left in Ealing. He was soon regarded as a great help to Groups in the District and

Page 14 Summer 2013 continued this support as Assistant District Commissioner (Group Support) in which he continued until the then mandatory warranted retirement age of 65 in 1983. So much was the regard for him that the District presented him and his late wife a greenhouse from all the Groups in the District. Harold in his last warranted role had provided help and personal attention and guidance to dozens of Scouters that help make Scouting flourish in Worthing at that time.

Between 1979 and 1992 Harold also acted as distributor and for some time co editor of the Worthing Scout Magazine ‘ScoutAbout’ in this role he spent hundreds of hours putting this publication into envelopes and driving around posting them through letterboxes. In the co editor’s role with his late wife, he obtained and provided valuable information for those requiring it in the District.

Harold’s work in Scouting also extended in the 1980’s to working with 2 nd Goring Scout Group where for three years he acted as Group Quartermaster and Group Secretary ensuring the smooth running of the administrative element of the Group.

Another role in the 1980’s was that of caretaker to the District Scout Centre in Worthing where he managed the bookings, did repairs and provided access for hirers, a job he was involved with for nearly nine years.

Harold and his late wife Winnie who were also members of the District Scout Fellowship a group that supported events and activities put on for the benefit of the young people in Scouting, since 1979 to the present, Harold has made tea by the gallon and helped at hundreds of events that the Fellowship were called upon to assist.

In 1983 he started his the role he held until his recent death, as Assistant District Secretary (Appointments). In this position Harold processed hundreds of applications for Leaders, Helpers, Administrators and Commissioners to work with young people in the Worthing District, this role is as large as a full time job with hours a week being spent managing the paperwork involved in this important role. The Link. National Catholic Scout Fellowship Page 15 Harold also got to grips with PC technology in his 80s for his Scouting roles. In the last few years this job became even more time-consuming for him as the requirements of the Criminal Records Bureau checking procedures were passed to him to manage to ensure the safety of the young people in Scouting.

His dedication to Scouting never prevented him from being a good father and husband with family holidays being the highlight of the calendar. In addition to his main hobby he was a member of the Royal British Legion and his wife were keen gardeners and short mat bowlers and were members of the High Salvington Short Mat Bowls club.

In 1947 he was married to his late wife Winnie, who sadly died in May 2003 after 56 years of marriage and had five children, several grandchildren and a greatgrandson.

His Scouting rubbed off on members of his family, his wife, his late brother and some of his children and grandchildren having been involved in the movement.

Harold was recognised many times from the Scout Association for his outstanding service to Scouting being awarded in 1958 the Medal of Merit, the Silver Acorn in 1982 and the top adult good service award the Silver Wolf. He also held the honorary appointment of District Vice President.

In July 2007 Harold was presented with the Chief Scouts 60 year long service award for the hard work and dedication to Scouting over that time.

He attended the St.Michaels Catholic Church in High Salvington since coming to Worthing and was a server and supporter of many events there over the last 35+ years.

Harold is survived by 4 children, his grandchildren and a recent arrival last year of a great grandson.

Big Adventure Family Camp

After nearly twelve months in the planning, some twenty families plus leaders from 2nd Hinckley (St Peter’s) Scout Group took part in a Big Adventure Camp over the weekend of 17/19 May. A good number of parents helped with the planning, for which four teams were created: programme, equipment, catering and administration, each headed up by an experienced leader.

Over fifty adults and young people camped over the two nights, and with day visitors on the Saturday and Sunday around seventy people took part in the weekend.

The event took place at Fox Coverts, Hinckley District’s campsite on the outskirts of the Leicestershire village of Kirkby Mallory, and about a mile from the famous Mallory Park racetrack.

And a very busy weekend it was, with parents and siblings enjoying a variety of activities. Most of the set-up took place on the Thursday evening, which enabled Friday evening to remain relatively low key and allow families to get settled in.

But after breakfast on the Saturday morning, activities started in earnest with three teams being created to add a bit of a competitive edge to the weekend. The morning activities took in an animal hunt, a water race and shelter building.

The Link. National Catholic Scout Fellowship Page 17 Following lunch, activities continued with a trapping exercise, a flag- capture game, and a blindfold trail. The highlight of the latter was one very lithe mother who managed to limbo under a ranch-style fence panel!

In the late afternoon everybody set off on a walk across the fields to the nearby village of Newbold Verdon; there was a shorter version and a longer version for the more intrepid, and a quiz to help everyone take in their surroundings. Skittles and a hearty supper at the village club set everybody up for a more direct walk back. After a very brief campfire, sleeping bags beckoned for many very weary campers!

Getting up in time for Sunday breakfast was a struggle for many, before a morning of shooting, archery and fire lighting. We were joined by St Peter’s parish priest, Fr Frank Daly, who celebrated Mass at the campsite’s open-air chapel on what was the feast of Pentecost. Fr Frank spoke about how such weekends develop existing friendships and help to create new ones.

Fr Frank joined everybody for lunch, after which the camp was dismantled, and many very exhausted people made their way home. The feedback from the weekend has been really good, and many would like to do it again next year! Perhaps therein lies an opportunity…

Page 18 Summer 2013 Garth Morrison RIP...

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Sir W Garth Morrison, KT, CBE, RN Vice-President of The Scout Association and former Chief Scout went home 24th May 2013.

He passed away at home after a brief illness, bravely borne, in his sleep with his family.

Many of the changes underpinning the growth of Scouting among young people and adult volunteers are largely due to the efforts of former Chief Scout William Garth Morrison, who died 24 May 2013.

One of his major aims during his tenure as Chief Scout (1988-96) was to tackle Scouting stereotypes and make it appealing to a diverse range of backgrounds. This was achieved by easing the uniform rules so youth members felt more relaxed about wearing it.

He was created Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1994 for his work in the voluntary sector and served as Vice- President of The Scout Association from 1996 onwards.

His Scouting appointments included area commissioner for East Lothian and chief commissioner of . He was awarded the Silver Wolf in 1982 and served as a member of the World Scout Committee from 1991 until 2001.

Garth Morrison is survived by two sons, one daughter and his wife Gill. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Lady Gill and the rest of his family at this sad time.

The Link. National Catholic Scout Fellowship Page 19 13th St Michael’s, Chatham...

In 1982 a newly ordained priest arrived in the parish of St Michael The Archangel Chatham in Kent The church has just had a new Parish Priest appointed following the death of his predecessor. The new curate Fr Timothy Forbes -Turner, who had a background in Scouting, was asked to form a scout group attached to the church. There had previously been a scout group in the parish from 1921 until 1967, when the then parish priest felt it was no longer needed and it was disbanded.

On 9 th February 1983 the group was reformed and was called 13 th Medway St Michael’s Scout Group, a number usually associated with bad luck, but not for this group. It has continued to grow and the fact that 30 years on it is still flourishing is all due to the enthusiasm that Fr Tim instilled in those who succeeded him. They have been great supporters of NCSF events, having taken part in the two Walsingham Camps among there activities.

They are celebrating this anniversary with a serious of events involving children and parents and will be supporting St Michael the Archangel Church as it celebrates 150 years of its existence.

Page 20 Summer 2013 From the National Chaplain...

Remember "Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer..." A song by Nat King Cole. Some of you will have already had your summer camp at the end of May and others looking forward to it during the forthcoming Summer holidays. The lyrics imply hot and long summer days and evenings, which to most of us may seem unreal.

I am one of those who have come back from summer camp in Oban, Scotland at the end of May with a group of Sea scouts. We began each day with prayers. The weather was good we went boating on Loch Etive everyday, we lazed around at lunch enjoying the sun, the warmth and the chat and laughter, then back out on the water till it was time for cooking and eating our dinner.

The evenings were largely given over to games and activities and ended up around the campfire chatting and singing, to the accompaniment of a piano accordion, 2 guitars and a tin whistle, Cocoa and a final prayer rounded off the days.

To all of us in scouting these times communing with nature and each other in our own tented village should be the highlight of our scouting year. At the scout meeting last night the scouts were full of talk about the camp, and some happy memories were being recalled.

You know, in the words of a previous Chief Scout, George Purdy, "these memories will help keep us warm in our old age". Talking of Chief Scouts, it was sad to hear of the death of ex Chief Scout Garth Morrison. He was a lovely man, I am told that his memorial Service was lovely. Our condolences go out to his wife and family, May he rest in peace, Amen. As we say in scouting he has, "gone home".

If you have had your summer camp, I hope it was a good one, why not tell us about it? If you are going on camp in Summer I hope it goes well and that you have some, "lazy, hazy, crazy days". Don't forget to make plenty of time in the programme for fun and enjoyment. Good scouting.

The Link. National Catholic Scout Fellowship Page 21 Regional Masses...

After the mention of this in our last issue serious consideration is now being given to holding the first of these regional gatherings at a venue in the North West This would be easily within the reach of those groups in the Liverpool Metropolitan area.

A venue has already been tentatively approached and is to be assessed for facilities and access.

Clearly much has to be ‘sorted’ as yet but if you wish to be part of it please contact the NCSF Manager who be taking a lead role at present.

Are you interested in attending such an event? It would be an opportunity for Catholics, whether as group or individuals working in Scouting to come together and celebrate their catholicity.

It would be open to all in Scouting and would involve a social element of celebration so please let Margaret know.

How Gift Aid Works—The Official Version...

The Gift Aid scheme is for gifts of money by individuals who pay UK tax. Gift Aid donations are regarded as having basic rate tax deducted by the donor. Charities or CASCs take your donation - which is money you've already paid tax on - and reclaim the basic rate tax from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on its 'gross' equivalent - i.e. the amount before basic rate tax was deducted.

Basic rate tax is 20 per cent, so this means that if you give £10 using Gift Aid, it’s worth £12.50 to the charity. For donations between 6 April 2009 and 5 April 2011 the charity or CASC will also get a separate government supplement of three pence on every pound you give. But hurry as it can only be back dated a maximum of 4 years

Much more information can be found on the HMRC website at the following address. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/individuals/giving/gift- aid.htm

Please remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that you pay sufficient tax to cover the amount of tax reclaimed in gift aid by the NCSF.
