MOULIN LIKELY TARGET FOR BAAEED BACK WITH A Shadwell=s highly progressive 3-year-old Baaeed (GB) (Sea The BANG AT LEOPARDSTOWN Stars {Ire}) is likely to be seen next in the G1 Prix du Moulin at ParisLongchamp Sept. 5, trainer William Haggas told Nick Luck=s Daily Podcast. Baaeed is unbeaten in four tries, having built on victories at the maiden and novice level with a four-length win in the Listed Sir S. at Newmarket on July 8, and with a 6 1/2-length score in the G3 S. at Glorious Goodwood three weeks later. AWe were very pleased with him [at Goodwood] and he proved he=s worth a shot at a better race, I think,@ said Haggas. AThere=s the [G1] Jacques le Marois [Aug. 15], which I think is too quick, so it=s the Moulin Sept. 5 or the back-up is the [G2] [at Goodwood Aug. 28], but I really want to go for a Group 1 race with him now. We have to go to France, and that=s complicated in its own way. If all goes well in , then it=s the [G1] QEII or nothing--if it=s bottomless at Ascot he probably won=t go.@ Cont. p3

The homebred chestnut enjoyed a banner 2020 season, going unbeaten through a four-race campaign which included wins in the G1 , G1 Prix de l=Opera and GI Breeders= Cup Turf. Sent postward as the heavily backed 1-2 favourite, she was settled several lengths off the pace, with just one rival behind, in seventh until improving to go fifth at halfway. Making smooth headway on the bridle in the straight, Tarnawa cruised to the front approaching the final furlong and lengthened clear in imperious fashion to easily account for the overmatched Silence Please (Ire) ( {Ire}) by 6 1/2 lengths. Silence Please, in turn, finished 13 lengths clear of the remainder headed by Hector de Maris (Ire) ( {GB}). AIt was her first run back after a long absence and, as you could see, she was carrying a few kilos extra compared to last year,@ said trainer Dermot Weld. AI had to be extra careful with her, after the wonderful dry spell that we=ve had, and my only concern was that I may have left her a little too short.@

In a statement sent to its representatives, the TBA has said it is working closely with state and federal governments, who, it insists, regard breeding activities as part of the agriculture sector, and therefore an essential industry. The movement of staff and stock is subject to COVID-19 procedures in each area and farms are urged to register their business as COVID Safe if applicable and have a COVID-19 Safe Plan in place. "As with last year, the movement of mares across state borders is something that concerns many breeders. Again, freight companies are well set up to move stock and navigate any protocols," TBA chief executive Tom Reilly said in the statement. "For those wishing to move mares with farm-owned trucks or vehicles, we have developed in-principle agreements with the NSW, VIC and QLD governments relating to movement of mares. When these have been formally signed off by the relevant departments we will provide more details (likely early next week). "I am also conscious that many breeders in NSW will be concerned with moving stock between areas that have restrictions, especially with many parts of the Hunter being placed into lockdown today. Disappointingly, it has also just been announced that Victoria will go into a seven-day lockdown. "Since the Hunter lockdown was announced, TBA has been in contact with the NSW state government to explain the needs of the breeding industry." TBA has issued advice that all farms register as COVID Safe with the state government (including getting a QR code), that they develop their own COVID Safe Plan, and complete a COVID-19 Safety Plan for Freight and Transport for each relevant trip, with drivers or staff to carry the required documentation. "From our conversations with all state governments--and the experience of 2020--we are confident that drivers or staff moving stock inside state borders will meet all relevant protocols if they have these documents in their possession," Reilly said. "We are hopeful of providing clearer guidelines for the movement of mares between states early next week." The statement also pointed out in general terms all governments are very concerned--and therefore are more risk averse--due to the high transmissibility of the Delta strain of COVID-19. "Because of this, I think we should expect governments to move very quickly in imposing lockdowns and changing protocols when outbreaks occur," Reilly said.

PESSIN SAVORS AN SIBLINGS OF SUCCESSFUL SARATOGA GRADS ON OFFER AT FASIG HONORABLE SUCCESS By Christie DeBernardis There have been several horses over the past 100 years of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale to summon big price tags, eclipsing the $500,000 mark, in the Humphrey S. Finney pavilion and then go on to be quite successful on the racetrack. The siblings of four such are part of the catalogue for the famed auction's centennial edition to be held at the Spa Aug. 9-10. The 2017 GI Belmont S. winner Tapwrit (Tapit) summoned $1.2 million at the Saratoga Sale back in 2015 from a partnership comprised of Bridlewood Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Robert LaPenta.

But after a lifetime in the game, and 36 years since saddling his first winner, he's neither expecting nor even desiring to transform the intimate scale of his operation. "You know, I don't get jealous of anybody," Pessin says. "I'm very happy with where I'm at. I've been successful with the numbers I've had. And I take my hat off to the big guys. I mean, I couldn't do what they do. I couldn't have hundreds of horses and keep track of it all, take care of it all. And I don't want to. I'm very happy with 10 to 16 horses. Yes, it is a numbers game. And the more horses you have, the better your shot of getting one like 'Bell'. But I also know you go through a lot of horses doing that. Some of those guys have 200 2-year-olds-and if five of them can run, those five will make a name for you. But I wouldn't like doing it that way. That wouldn't be me." As it is, the GII Honorable Miss H. success of Bell's the One at Saratoga last week took her trainer to a new high in yearly earnings (currently $724,298, the work of 11 winners from just 58 starters), with five months still to go.

That said, he concedes that Bell's the One has always had her idiosyncrasies. Yes, she won her first four races, but her preparations had hardly been those of a point-and-press professional. "The last two weeks before her first start, four different times she just pulled up galloping and we had to lead her off the racetrack," Pessin recalls. His father was such a highly- regarded diagnostician that even people who weren't clients or friends would tend to consult him about their better horses. And Pessin was at his side through boyhood, watching and learning. He would run X-rays through all the various solutions before putting them in the dark room. With appropriate supervision he could even perform castrations. "So I learned a lot about soundness," he says. You might think you've got two correct horses, when actually you got two horses that toe out so bad they'd trip you if you walked by. "Back then, horses were a little more sturdy," Pessin reflects. "And they were trained hard. If a horse stood up to it, fine; if he didn't, you moved him out and another one was waiting to come in. The philosophy of those trainers was if you can't train, you can't run. And with good horses, that's pretty much true. And good horses were what they were looking for. They weren't looking for a maiden 10. But if you were to train like that today, you wouldn't have anything left in the barn. At least, I wouldn't. The big guys probably could do it, but I'd need to watch a little more closely." By the same token, nobody has more appreciation for the endeavor of cheaper horses. PIN OAK STUD TO OFFER REMAINING STOCK AT FASIG-TIPTON KENTUCKY

Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stud, one of the country's most successful Thoroughbred breeding and racing operations over the past six decades, will be offering its remaining broodmares, weanlings, and some racing fillies at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Sept. 12. Denali Stud will handle the sale as agent for Pin Oak. Separate from this main group are 14 yearlings which will be offered in the upcoming Keeneland September Sale and an additional yearling entered to sell at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Sale. Some 14 retired mares and horses will remain on the farm. "This has been part of Ms. Abercrombie's plan all along, as we have been selling mares and downsizing the past few years," farm manager Clifford Barry said. "Actually, in keeping to her plan, we have sold more yearlings than we kept in training the past couple of years." Among the 24 horses being offered in September are graded stakes winners Overheard (Macho Uno), in foal to McKinzie; Gold Medal Dancer (Medaglia d'Oro), in foal to Munnings; and Don't Leave Me (Lemon Drop Kid), in foal to Authentic.
