Philadelphia’s Long Term Care Ombudsman Supervisor Erika Barber and Dan Anderson from Center in the Park presented a plaque to DVVH staff Derrick to honor our past residents who where (PEERs) for DVVH. Empowered Expert Residents (PEERs) are individuals living in long-term care settings who have been trained to advocate to improve the quality of life in their homes. After graduating from a Long- Term Care Ombudsman five-part empowerment training, PEERs are equipped to help their fellow residents improve day-to-day life in long-term care facilities. PEERs also advise the Office of State Long-Term Care Ombudsman on the issues affecting all of Pennsylvania's long-term care residents. Kristian and the Activities staff coordinated a successful and fun State Veterans Home Week. Residents enjoyed eating various lunches and treats outside while watching socially distanced entertainment. Unfortunately due to Covid precautions we were unable to have family members or volunteers present. DVVH kicked off Veterans Home week on Sunday Aug 22nd with Phillies History & Trivia followed by Hot Dogs for lunch and a Phillies vs ball game. Phillies won 7-4.

Monday August 23rd All American Day! Residents wore Red, White, & Blue, lunch was: Hoagies (Turkey, Tuna, and Veggie. In the afternoon residents were served hand dipped Ice Cream.

Tuesday August 24th was Hawaiian Day, residents and staff wore Tropical Patterns we had an Outdoor Picnic Pig Roast (Sponsored by the VFW Coot- ies), BBQ Chicken, Cole Slaw, Sweet Hawaiian Rolls, and Corn on the Cob. The Entertainer was Lorenda a Hula Dancer and Fire Performer. Brenda Johnson donated Philadelphia Water Ice.

Wednesday August 25th was Family Reminiscing Day residents wore shirts donated by the Verizon Pioneers. We had another Outdoor Picnic which featured Tacos & Burritos. The Dixieland Band performed a variety of and Southern Rock songs.

Thursday August 26th was On The Boardwalk Day residents and staff wore boardwalk type outfits. Our outdoor picnic served up some finger foods for lunch, Chili Fries, Sausage, and Chicken Fingers. Our entertainers were Stu and Nevis who performed 60’s and 70’s classics Brenda Johnson donated Philadelphia Water Ice. In the afternoon the residents played Boardwalk Games, and listened to music.

Friday August 27th was Military Day, residents and staff wore their favorite Branch of Service Colors, we had a bad weather day so we had Patriotic Sing-Alongs in the units followed by our indoor picnic, residents were served Fish Sandwiches, Cheeseburgers, Veggie Burgers, Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad. Residents enjoyed Root Beer Floats, Cotton Candy and Popcorn in their units.

Thank you to the Verizon Pioneers who donated shirts, sponsored numerous Bingo’s and hosted a picnic during State Veterans Home Week. They also donated sugar free candy and Bird Houses to be displayed around DVVH. Veterans Homes Week kicked off on Sunday Aug 22nd, everyday we had a different theme and a picnic, the Veterans really enjoyed the Roasted Pig and Hula Dancer!!! I am immensely proud of our staff and their continued work in taking care of our Veterans. Activities Department gets a “Special Thank You” for the hard work coordinating and executing an Outstanding Veterans Homes Week!!!
