Kaltura On-Prem™ Video Platform – Supported Formats (October 2010)

This document provides information on common formats and codecs supported by the Kaltura On-Prem Video Platform in its standard installation and when integrated with the On2 Flix transcoding engine and/or the MS Expression Encoder.

Supported Source Formats The following source formats – i.e. formats that can be ingested by the Kaltura platform - are supported. (Additional formats may be supported as well but have not been verified.)

FLV/F4V, MOV/MP4/QT/M4V, AVI, 3GP, ASF/WMV, MPG/M1V/M2V, MKV, Ogg , RM

Supported Source Codecs The following codecs are supported. (Additional codecs may be supported as well but have not been verified.)

Input Video Codecs Dvix (Div3/4/5)/DX50, DV, H263, H264/AVC, IV40/50 ( Indeo codecs), MPeg 4 Visual, Mpeg1/2, MJPG, MP42/3, RV30/40, FLV1/4,VP3/5/6/7/8, SVQ1/3 (Sorenson), XVid, Theora, WMV1/2/3, VC1

Input Audio Codecs MP3, MP1/2, AC3, AAC, Vorbis, AMR, PCM, WMA7/8/9, FLAC, QDM2, RA, Nellymoser, Cook, GSM

Target Formats/Codecs The following target formats and codecs – i.e. formats and codecs that can be displayed and managed using the Kaltura platform - are supported per transcoding engine:

FFmpeg/Mencoder (included in the standard Kaltura On-Prem deployment)

Target Formats FLV, MP4, AVI, 3GP, OGG

Target Video Codecs H264, H263/FLV1,Theora, MPEG 4 visual, WMV1/2

Target Audio Codecs MP3, AAC, Vorbis

On2 Flix Engine for Linux (Verified version: 8.0.16.1)

Adding the On2 Flix engine to the Kaltura On-Prem deployment enables support for the VP6 video codec as a target codec – this is required for enabling player seek functionality on HTTP streaming delivery. Microsoft Expression Encoder (Verified version: Expression Encoder 3).

Adding the MS Expression Encoder to the Kaltura On-Prem deployment enables support for Microsoft’s Silverlight Smooth Streaming (ISM format).
