This research uses Landsat remote imaging to examine the changing patterns of forests. It focuses on areas which have undergone a high level of a specific fragmentation driver, in particular either agricultural expansion or commodity- driven deforestation. Seven municipalities in the states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso in Brazil are selected as case study areas, as these states experienced a high level of commodity-driven deforestation and agricultural expansion respectively. Land cover maps of each municipality are created using the Geographical Information System software ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension. The resulting categorical maps are input into Fragstats fragmentation software to calculate quantifiable fragmentation metrics for each municipality. To determine the effects that these characteristics are likely to cause, this study uses a literature review to determine how species traits affect their responses to forest fragmentation. Results indicate that, in areas that underwent agricultural expansion, the remaining forest patches became more complex in shape with longer edges and lost a large amount Citation: Slattery, Z.; Fenner, R. of core area. The larva of P. attenuatus can be distinguished from that of P. fragilis, the only other species of which the larva has been described, by the presence of a pair of tubercles on the ligula and by the arrangement of the spines and hooks on the abdominal segments. Key words: aquatic insects, Damselfly, Insecta, taxonomy, Zygoptera Resumo A larva de Perilestes attenuatus Selys, 1886 é descrita e ilustrada a partir de exúvias de larvas criadas e de larvas de último estádio coletadas em Manaus, Amazonas, Brasil. A larva de P. attenuatus pode ser diferenciada da larva de P. fragilis, a única espécie que já possuía a larva descrita, pela presença do par de tubérculos na lígula e pela disposição dos espinhos e ganchos nos segmentos abdominais. The family is also recorded in tropical Africa, where it is represented by a monotypic endemic genus and species: Nubiolestes diotima (Schmidt, 1943), restricted to Cameroon (Dijkstra & Vick 2004).

In the past two years, over 20 new species have been found by the present authors after studying over 250 odonatans from 300,000 amber inclusions. Most of them have now been published, and here we provide a brief review. Three suborders of crown Odonata have been recorded, including the damselfly families or superfami- lies Platycnemididae, Platystictidae, Perilestidae, Hemiphlebiidae, Coenagrionoidea, Pseudostigmatoidea, Mesomegaloprepidae and Dysagrionidae, plus the dragonfly families Lindeniidae, Gomphaeschnidae and Burmaeshnidae, and the damsel-dragonfly family Burmaphlebiidae. Keywords: Anisoptera; Anisozygoptera; Zygoptera; Cretaceous; Burmese amber; dragonfly Introduction Dragonflies have an excellent fossil record on account of their large size and association with water-laid geological sedimentary deposits. Moreover, the ready preservation of the com- plex wing venation provides systematically useful features including the appearance of the pterostigma, nodus and arculus. Dragonflies sensu lato – in the broad, palaeontological sense or odonatopterans – date back to the earliest-known, late Palaeozoic radiation of the ptery- gotes (winged insects) in the mid-Carboniferous, circa 320 million years ago. The Carboniferous geropterans resemble some other contemporary insects (palaeodictyopteroids) that did not habitually fold their wings.

Para el Ama- pá se registraron 58 especies de Zygoptera, insertadas en 27 gé- neros y siete familias. Coenagrionidae, con 45 especies registra- das, comprendió la mayor abundancia durante el estudio con apro- ximadamente el 81% de los organismos capturados. El presente trabajo incrementa en 44% el número de especies de Zygoptera para el estado, los resultados encontrados adquieren alta relevan- cia en el reconocimiento de la diversidad del orden Odonata en Amapá y el bioma amazónico. La Plata (1900), Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA. e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: A new lestoid genus, Inacayalestes gen. nov., based on Inacayalestes aikunhuapi sp. nov. is described from Nahuel Huapi Este locality (Ypresian), Neuquén province, Patagonia, Argentina. The new genus is assigned to Synlestidae and seems to be related to Ecchlorolestes Barnard, 1937 and Synlestes Selys, 1868, both genera from Southern Hemisphere, from South Africa and Australia, respectively. The new genus enlarges the record of Lestomorpha in Argentina to three fossil genera: Promegalestes Petrulevičius & Nel, 2004, Austroperilestes Petrulevičius & Nel, 2005, and Inacayalestes gen. nov., whereas two extant genera are present: Lestes Leach, 1815 and Archilestes Selys, 1862.
