Monday, April 26, 2021 | No. 165 One of the things moviegoers like most about going to theatres is seeing films on the Big Screen, "the way they were meant to be seen." What people don't realize is that when films started in the mid-1890s, there were neither screens nor projectors. The very short films of that era were meant to be seen individually by looking into peep show machines in arcades. Those Kinetoscope devices were one of many inventions from Thomas Edison's factory in West Orange, NJ. Since Edison was monetizing his Kinetoscopes quite well, he had no interest in developing a machine to project film images on walls. Others, however, saw a big future in showing films to groups of people. Peep show owners, in fact, were very vocal in pressing Edison to devise a Film projection to large audiences was much more way to show life size images on arcade walls. This led to the Vitascope profitable than viewing through individual kiosks, since projection system, developed by Washington, DC inventor Thomas Armat, fewer machines were needed in proportion to the but then marketed by Edison's organization as if it were his own invention. number of viewers - Click to Play The first public Vitascope screening took place April 23, 1896 at Koster & Biel's Music Hall, a vaudeville house in New York's Herald Square at 34th Street near Broadway, the site today of Macy's. It would have premiered three days earlier, but it took longer than expected to install the machinery. That first night audience was dazzled by film images projected on a 20 foot canvas screen set within a gilded frame.

Monday, May 31, 2021 | No. 170 Amazon's $8.45 billion acquisition of MGM is driven by the same need for content that drove the April 1924 merger of Marcus Lowe's Metro Pictures with the Goldwyn Company. Lowe, based in New York, owned 111 theatres and needed a steady stream of pictures to play. In 1920 he paid $3 million for Hollywood-based Metro, hoping to get the necessary content. By 1924, that still hadn't happened. Metro was a small studio without strong management. Lowe was about to shut it down, but while vacationing for his health in Palm Beach he had the good fortune to meet with Goldwyn principal Frank Godsol, who also was there under doctor's orders. They were brought together by Broadway producer Lee Shubert, who as an investor in both companies knew Goldwyn was in trouble. It's unclear who gets credit for the idea, but Lowe decided to merge Metro with Goldwyn. The only problem was who would manage Metro-Goldwyn? Metro had a good distribution department, but nothing else. Goldwyn had an impressive 46 acre studio in Culver City, which it purchased in 1919 for $325,000 for the initial 16 acres. But Goldwyn, too, lacked strong management. Movie producing pioneer Samuel Goldwyn hadn't been with the company for years, having been forced out by Godsol and others. Although it sounds like Goldwyn was named after Sam, Sam had actually changed his name from Goldfish to the better sounding Goldwyn after the company was founded in 1916 and Irving Thalberg, MGM’s “Boy Wonder” Click to Watch the Academy’s Tribute named after its original partners – Goldfish and Edgar & Archibald Selwyn.

Monday, April 5, 2021 | No. 162 Happy 95th birthday to legendary filmmaker Roger Corman, born on April 5, 1926. Known as "The Pope of Pop Cinema", Corman began his career in the 1950’s as a writer, director and producer of low-budget genre films, including westerns, horror and sci-fi cult classics such as Highway Dragnet (1954), The Day the World Ended (1955), It Conquered the World (1956), Not of This Earth (1957) and House of Usher (1960). He became the leading filmmaker for American International Pictures, the producer-distributor of 1950’s and 60’s low-budget, independent films which were popular as drive-in double features. At AIP, Corman’s technique was to work very fast and very cheap, often shooting multiple films back-to-back on the same location. AIP made the most of Corman's production skills, frequently beginning a film’s development by creating a poster and then showing it to movie fans to gauge interest. Corman created a factory for micro- budget filmmaking which gave break-in opportunities to young directors and actors at the start of Happy Birthday to their careers. Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich, James Roger Corman – Click to Play Cameron, Joe Dante and Jonathan Demme all learned their filmmaking techniques by working on projects with Corman. Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern, Charles Bronson, Dennis Hopper, Talia Shire, Sandra Bullock, Diane Ladd, William Shattner and Robert De Niro gained visibility as young actors in Corman’s low-budget productions. In 1960, Corman directed for AIP the horror film House of Usher, starring Vincent Price, based on an 1839 short story by Edgar Allan Poe.

Monday, May 3, 2021 | No. 166 We don't know precisely when our universe was born, but we do know that the Big Bang that created the Marvel Cinematic Universe took place May 2, 2008 when Iron Man exploded in theatres. At the time, Marvel was a year away from being purchased by Disney, IM's star Robert Downey Jr. was known for years of making Hollywood Bad Boy headlines, IM was considered a second tier Marvel property and the idea of a shared universe with storylines for individual Marvel comic book superheroes was in its infancy. In fact, the next step in that direction was a misstep with The Incredible Hulk, which had a not very muscular opening June 13, 2008. IM had opened to $98.6 million and did $585.8 million worldwide, but Hulk kicked-off to just $55.4 million and only grossed $264.8 million globally. Nonetheless, Marvel stayed the course and moviegoers began gravitating to new MCU titles, Downey's life took a happy turn for the better and Iron Man spawned hit sequels (IM2 with $623.9 million worldwide in 2010 and IM3 with $1.2 billion globally in 2013). Disney purchased Marvel August 31, 2009 in a deal worth $4 billion. Since then, MCU films have grossed about $22 billion – some $18 billion more than Disney paid. Iron Man Suits Up -Click to Play We've already seen three phases of the MCU and are now entering the fourth. Phase One began with IM and ended with the first crossover film The Avengers (2012).

Monday, March 29, 2021 | No. 161 Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks became Hollywood’s first power couple when they married 101 years ago on March 28, 1920. Pickford and Fairbanks had already established themselves as leading stars of the silver screen, with the public dubbing her “America’s Sweetheart” for her charming performances in films such as Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms (1917) and calling Fairbanks "Everybody's Hero" for his swashbuckling roles in films like The Mark of Zorro (1918). The year before they married, they also became business partners by joining with Charlie Chaplin and director D.W. Griffith to create United Artists. Filmmakers who signed on at UA were true independents attempting to take control of the destiny of their films. This was in great contrast to how films made by the major studios were controlled by their production heads or founders – like Adolph Zukor at Famous Players-Lasky, which later became Paramount Pictures. Mary worked for Zukor for many years as her star power grew. In May 1916, she signed a new deal with Zukor that gave her complete control of her projects, including a $10,000 weekly salary plus 50% of each film's profits with a guarantee of more than $1M - about $18.5M today. Mary Pickford and Douglas Besides launching UA, Mary & Doug also made a major impact on Hollywood's rapidly Fairbanks, on their Honeymoon evolving social scene.
