Esta tese de doutorado tem o propósito de investigar a construção da memória cultural em quatro romances irlandeses contemporâneos: Star of the Sea (2002), de Joseph O’Connor; Days Without End (2016), de Sebastian Barry; Fallen (2014), de Lia Mills; e The Rising of Bella Casey (2013), de Mary Morrissy. Propõe-se que os romances do corpus são performances de memória, isto é, construções da memória cultural que exploram os discursos histórico e memorialístico para criar figuras de memória que, por fim, trazem à memória cultural perspectivas silenciadas ou esquecidas pelo discurso histórico dominante. Divide-se o trabalho em duas partes temáticas: na primeira, analisa-se a construção da memória cultural da Grande Fome e da diáspora irlandesa para os Estados Unidos nos romances Star of the Sea e Days Without End; discute-se como a memória social da Grande Fome colabora para a construção da memória cultural da catástrofe em Star of the Sea. Assim como a Grande Fome, a diáspora aos Estados Unidos é explorada como memória traumática, e a participação irlandesa na expansão para o Oeste norte-americano traz a memória do trauma dos perpetradores. Na segunda parte examina-se a composição da memória cultural da Primeira Guerra Mundial e do Levante de Páscoa de 1916 em Fallen e The Rising of Bella Casey. Ressalta-se a intenção de Fallen em recuperar a memória acerca da participação irlandesa na Primeira Guerra Mundial, um assunto controverso durante grande parte do século XX devido à imposição da memória política do Estado Livre Irlandês – que se define como celta, católico e republicano. Discute-se também a construção de lugares de memória através da criação de monumentos e como estes refletem conflitos pelo domínio da memória cultural. Em The Rising of Bella Casey há a recuperação das vozes de mulheres na figura de Isabella Casey, irmã do dramaturgo Seán O’Casey, que renasce criativamente durante o Levante de Páscoa de 1916. Investiga-se como o romance se posiciona como uma performance de memória que contesta a memória política do Estado Livre Irlandês e a exclusão de vozes dissonantes. Verifica-se que os romances selecionados para esta análise não apenas exploram o discurso histórico como cenários para a trama, mas trabalham com história e memória para produzir textos memorialísticos e, consequentemente, performar a memória na contemporaneidade. This doctoral dissertation aims to investigate the construction of cultural memory in four contemporary Irish novels: Star of the Sea (2002), de Joseph O’Connor, Days Without End (2016), de Sebastian Barry, Fallen (2014), de Lia Mills, and The Rising of Bella Casey (2013), de Mary Morrissy. It is suggested that these novels are performances of memory, i.e., they are constructions of cultural memory that explore historical and memory discourses to create figures of memory that bring to cultural memory perspectives silenced or forgotten by the dominant historical discourse. The work is divided into two thematic parts: in the first part, the construction of the cultural memory of the Great Famine and the Irish diaspora to the United States is analyzed in the novels Star of the Sea and Days Without End. It explores how the social memory of the Great Famine collaborates to build the cultural memory of the catastrophe in Star of the Sea. Similarly, the diaspora to the United States is read as a traumatic memory, and the Irish participation in the expansion to the North American West recalls the trauma of the perpetrators. In the second part, the composition of the cultural memory of the First World War and the 1916 Rising in Fallen and The Rising of Bella Casey is examined. It is suggested that Fallen seeks to recover the memory of the Irish participation in the First World War, a controversial subject for much of the 20th century due to the imposition of the political memory of the Irish Free State, which defines itself as Celtic, Catholic and republican. It also discusses the construction of places of memory through the creation of monuments and how they reflect conflicts over the domain of cultural memory. The Rising of Bella Casey recovers women's voices in the figure of Isabella Casey, sister of playwright Seán O'Casey, who is creatively reborn during the 1916 Easter Rising.     Afterword: The Act and the Word Olwen Fouéré Actors are still categorized as mere interepreters within the artistic hier- arachies of Irish theatre. Of course, many of us have bowed to that definition and sadly trundle along, madly interpreting. I wonder why that is. As an actor/actress – or dare I say it – as an artist, as one who seeks, I am conscious that theatre demands everything of the actor’s human form. It demands everything of the body who acts and receives all the knowledge we will ever need. The body is the delta, alpha and omega of theatre and the actor’s power resides there, free from the perceived tyranny of the word. This is the task. It is as simple as putting words on a page and it is not easy, as any writer will tell you. A lot of things can get in the way. For instance, the idea that as I am woman I am therefore called an actress. An Actress might be an icon, languorous and eternally poised somewhere dangerously close to Sunset Boulevard. She lives alone and remains forever exotic and unattainable. There are times when I like that idea and court it for my own wicked amusement. The idea that as an actress I am brilliant at displaying emotion and can move an audience to tears, not to mention the nice writer in the back row. Even the idea that this is perhaps an actress’s job, to be so ‘moving’ in the role that everyone says she really must play Nora in A Doll’s House or later even Medea so that she can demonstrate her remarkable histrionic range – but mind, not too much rage, there madness lies, keep charming the audience if you can and don’t be too ‘strong’ or it will go against you.
