Masterpiece Marks 50 Years of Incredible Television!

HE LONGEST-RUNNING PRIMETIME DRAMA SERIES on TV celebrates its 50th year with an exciting Tline-up of new stories! The iconic PBS series that sparked America’s infatuation with British television, Masterpiece is renowned for consistently high-quality productions and has amassed an impressive 83 Primetime Emmys and several other awards. This anniversary season carries on the tradition of excellence with several productions, including a new adaptation chronicling the heartwarming and humorous adventures of a young country vet: All Creatures Great and Small Premieres Sunday, January 10, at 9:00 pm Re-airs Sundays at 2:00 pm

James Herriot’s charming adventures as a country vet come to life in an unforgettable new adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small. Based on a series of beloved books by British veterinary surgeon James Alfred Wight (better known by his pseudonym ), the story introduces the vet, now world renowned, for his inspiring humor, compassion, and love of life.

The new seven-part series opens in 1937. Hired fresh out of Veterinary College into the rural practice at Skeldale House in England’s Dales, James discovers that treating the animals is as much about treating their owners, and the Dales’ farmers are a tough crowd to please. As he explores his new trade, James also gets to know his newly formed dysfunctional family: his chaotic and erratic boss Siegfried Farnon, his wayward brother Tristan, and the shrewd housekeeper Mrs. Hall. When local beauty Helen Alderson attracts James’s attention he finds another, more enduring reason to stay in the Dales.

Newcomer stars as James Herriot. plays Siegfried Farnon, the unconventional, grumbling veterinarian who (reluctantly) takes a chance on hiring Herriott. Anna Madeley stars as Mrs. Hall, the housekeeper and kindly matriarch of Skeldale House, where Farnon and Herriot reside.

Siegfried’s charismatic younger brother Tristan is portrayed by Callum Wood- house, and Rachel Shenton stars as Helen Alderson, a farmer’s daughter who helps manage her family’s farmstead. Diana Rigg plays Mrs. Pumphrey, the haughty owner of the spoiled Pekingese Tricki-Woo.

This new All Creatures pre- serves the rich and uplifting spirit, tone and values of Herriot’s iconic characters and stories, and will bring to life his sharply observed, entertaining and incredibly funny tales of country life in the North of England for a modern audience. I

January 2021 Experience | 5 PBS American Portrait Premieres Tuesday, January 5, at 9:00 pm

A national storytelling project aligned with PBS’s 50th anniversary celebration, invites America to participate in a national conversation about what it really means to be an American today. The four-part documentary series, PBS American Portrait, captures the remarkable story of 2020 through the voices of people from every U.S. state and territory. Produced by PBS and RadicalMedia, each of the hour-long programs blends stories filmed by everyday people to create a chorus of voices sharing both common and unique experiences from across the country.

Each episode in the series focuses on a main theme: I Dream | January 5: Self-shot stories explore the meaning and state of the American dream. From the desire for home- ownership to ambitions for higher education or career success, they show the hard work, opportunities and barriers that come with pursuing this ideal today. Pictured: Tyler dreams of providing his future wife and children a life he didn’t have growing up. I Work | January 12: Everyday people share self-shot stories about their jobs and careers as they navigate the changes they’re experiencing and the goals they’re working towards. From teachers to truck drivers, they explore what it really means to work in America today. I Keep | January 19: People film themselves as they try to preserve or change traditions in their lives and communities. From struggles to protect culture to eliminating toxic legacies, it’s an intimate look at the practices we’ve inherited and the ones we’ll pass on. I Rise | January 26: People working to create an antiracist American future film themselves doing the hard work, con- fronting the obstacles and achieving the small victories that could add up to real change in the movement for racial justice. Nearly 4,000 readers are taken by THE TEN

Our Maine Public News team delivers exceptional news coverage on a host of topics each day from politics, to the economy, to health care, to the environment and more. Our reporting is important and designed to keep our listeners, viewers and readers fully informed on what is going on in Maine, New England, and the world. We also recognize that every now and then our audience needs a break from the news of the day… our inspiration for launching THE TEN newsletter.

Every Friday at 11:00 a.m., we send out THE TEN to nearly 4,000 readers and share the top 10 stories people may have missed that week. Nothing political. Nothing especially hard hitting. Just interesting stories that come across our desks from our own Maine Public News reporters, NPR, PBS, American Public Media, PRX, the BBC and more. A recent issue of THE TEN showcased stories about a Norwegian outdoor living concept called “Friluftsliv,” possible signs of life on Venus, why plastic surgery demand is booming, and how the world is doing meeting its biodiversity goals. Interesting and different.

THE TEN is entirely free and is just a click away to subscribe. Go to mainepublic.org and click on our News Tab to reach THE TEN sign-up page. We hope you do! I
