Knights of Columbus July All Saints Council 11402 2021 Dunwoody, Volume 28 (Established July 4th, 1994) Issue 7

Brothers,

I’d like to start my first report by saying what a pleasure it was to work side by side with our now Past Grand Knight Woody.

It certainly was an interesting time with more than our share of challenges. I have every confidence that the leadership team now with EJ by my side as DGK will continue to help keep our council a great place for a wonderful group of men, with their families’ support, to continue on with our works of charity, unity, and fraternity. I am proud to be associated with such a great group of men and look forward to the many years of our fraternity ahead.

As we come out of an incredibly trying time for people throughout our little planet, I’d like everyone’s help in our period of recovery and in trying to get us back to where we once were. I want to work not only with the leadership team, but with all our brother knights to pitch in and help with our various events that we used to do and maybe some new ones yet to be done.

That help may be in providing ideas, working in supporting roles, or even taking on the chair of a specific committee to make one of these events a fun success.

Of course, we will need everyone possible to start coming back to our in-person meetings and contributing their support, even if it’s just visiting with old friends and new and having a great time.

With everyone’s help, I think we have a great year of fun and recovery ahead of us!

Vivat Jesus, Brother Steve Strong

2 Paying Council Dues Electronically Members are a little confused as to the proper procedure for paying dues electronically. Sending a check for $40 by snail mail still works perfectly well also. Those liking immediate gratification may use the instructions below for a small processing fee.

Brothers,

Regular Council 11402 dues for 2021 are $40.

Our council website www.kc11402.org handles electronic payment of council dues.

You go to that web site, choose "Pay Dues", and you are connected to the PayPal system. You must have an active independent PayPal account already set up that is directed either to your check book or a credit card for debit purposes.

You may then pay your dues online for $41.50 (which includes a $1.50 electronic processing fee) by using your PayPal account to debit either a stated credit card or an amount directly out of your chosen checking account just like a debit card does. Your personal PayPal account must be set up independently.

You may still pay your normal 2021 annual dues directly at a meeting or send a check made out to “KofC Council 11402” to:

Financial Secretary Dan McDonough 7742 Spalding Drive #502 Peachtree Corners, GA 30092.

Email him at [email protected] with any questions.

3 June Meeting Back Outside

With the arrival of warmer weather and longer daylight, the Council has again moved its meeting operations outside to the McGivney parking lot. The fading of Covid fears marked the end of mandatory masks and the outside gave attendees adequate spacing as desired. We hope to move the meetings back indoors soon as the months progress. We had no Zoom transmission in June because the elections required in-person voting. We are delighted that the world is slowly returning to normalcy. Come back to join your brothers.

4 Two New Third Degree Members 6-29-2021 After a year of Covid stagnation, the Council has implemented a new team to perform the re- vised combined 1-2-3-Degree exemplification. On June 29th, two new council members (Brooks Patterson and John Leahy) became third degree members by sitting for this revised ceremony. New exemplification team members (Driscoll, Spencer, Knight, Fiscella, Hlad, Mattera, and Jones) did the honors to add the new members.

At our next 1-2-3– combined exemplification, we will add new members, and in addition give all current 1st and 2nd degree members the opportunity to sit through the revised service and progress to 3rd degree immediately. We hope to return to our previous schedule of last Tuesday of the month exemplifications. The new ceremony is now open to the viewing public, and is not restricted to council members only in the chamber. Family members encouraged.

John, 78, and Janice Patterson both attended the new combined degree.

They are retired.

Janice actually works with our council after taking the place of our council widow Mary Ann Delaria delivering donated food to the local St. Vincent de Paul Society in Chamblee.

John was recruited by Brother Joe Liebsack.

Brooks Patterson, 68, is a real Estate Developer and member of All Saints Parish living in Dunwoody.

His wife is Susan and they married Oct. 19, 1985.

He was recruited by Brother David Emery.

5 Dean Trantow is Knight of Month Unbelievably, our Past Grand Knight Dean Trantow had never before received a Knight-of-the Month Award from the Council, despite everything he had done over the years. He had received some awards along with wife Anita for their parish and council involvements.

Having served as Big Onion during the last several Vidalia Onion Drives, he was the obvious choice for the May award for running this year’s onion drive which sold all 300 bags for our parish and many hundreds of bags for other councils.

We thank him profusely for his hard work on this year’s Vidalia Onion Drive.

6 The Baileys Married 70 Years

Brother David Bailey and wife Barbara, both 92, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on April 7th. Our Lou Hlad was on hand at their Roswell retirement apartment to present our first 70th wedding certificate to a council brother. We had presented our former Grand Knight Stan Wasowski’s parents a similar certificate outside the council membership a few years back.

David and Barbara met while students at Gesu High School in Miami, Fl. She was originally from Pennsylvania, while David was born in the Bronx. They have two children, 1 grandchild, and two great grandchildren. They are both amazingly healthy, alert, and mobile for their ages, although Barbara wears a heart monitoring device.

Our Council continues to statistically amaze with the abundant number of long term marriages among our membership. God bless the Baileys, and we look forward to awarding them our first 80 year wedding certificate.

On their marriage date, April 7, 1951, Ben Hogan won the first of his two Augusta Masters Titles. Harry Truman was president.

7 Schlitts Married 60 Years Not all our brothers reside in the or Georgia area. Our council brother, Fred C. Schlitt , 78, is a Founding Member of All Saints 11402, and for many years has lived in Davenport, Florida with wife Margaret. On June 3rd, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary along with family and friends. They were nice enough to share their wonderful photos with us. We in turn are sending them a 60-year certificate. Our archival photo of Fred was woefully ancient and he and Margaret look great. Many of our older brothers will remember them from Atlanta.

9 New All Saints Deacon Alan D. Sims Formally announced by Monsignor Marren, but not yet not announced in the Georgia Bulletin, Deacon Alan D. Sims has taken the position of Deacon at All Saints Parish. He is moving from his current assignment at Saint Stanislaus in Wardsville, Missouri to Atlanta.

Deacon Sims is a Fourth Degree brother who is transferring from the Wardsville/Osage Bend Council 8399 in Wardsville Mo. and will seek entry into our All Saints Council and the Watters Assembly. His transfer documents are in process. He never participated in 4th degree activities.

In 1985 he was an All Saints parishioner until Mary Our Queen Parish opened and he joined the MOQ council. He was an MOQ brother until moving to Missouri and transferred there.

He had spent 20 years working as a contracts manager for General Electric Co. before retiring in 2011 and moving to central Missouri , where he served as the Director of Catholic Cemeteries, after service in nursing home ministry, and also prison ministry. He had favored continuing in parochial ministry at St. Stanislaus.

We welcome him back to All Saints as a new parish deacon and a new All Saints council brother. He has been assisting at parish Masses since early June.

10 Our Seminarian Nacey Ordained Deacon The Georgia Bulletin has announced the great news that Paul Nacey, one of our council’s four sponsored seminarians, became a Transitional Deacon on June 13th. A Transitional Deacon is one who will continue his studies to advance to the priesthood. A Permanent Deacon does not advance. Rev. Mr. Nacey will be assigned to St. Bernadette Parish in Cedartown. On Saturday, June 13, Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv., ordained Robert “Robbie” Cotta and Paul Nacey as transitional deacons for the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Concelebrants for the Mass were Bishop Joel M. Konzen, SM, and Bishop Bernard E. Shlesinger III, along with Father Tri John-Bosco Nguyen, director of vocations and Father Rey Pineda, associate director of seminarians. Additional priests, deacons and seminarians attended.

At the end of the celebration, Archbishop Hartmayer expressed to Kay Nacey, mother of Paul Nacey, that she wouldn’t have to lift a finger at home now there are two deacons in the family. Paul’s father, Wayne Nacey, serves as a deacon in North Carolina. He assisted Paul with vesting at the Mass. “I don’t know how you’re going to do it with two deacons in your household,” said Archbishop Hartmayer. “But I can assure you, they are ordained to serve. You will never have to set a table again. You will never do another dish, wash another dish again. You have two deacons–no excuse.”

Born in Dallas, Texas, Paul Nacey said his family had the most impact on his journey to the priesthood. “My family raised me, kept me close to the church,” said Paul. Previously, Paul’s father, Deacon Wayne Nacey, served at St. Peter Church in LaGrange. Deacon Wayne hopes his son learns to serve people at his new parish. “People let you into their life and in many ways it’s a tremendous blessing, The family is excited for Paul, The most important thing is that he’s answering God’s call”, said Deacon Wayne. In this next year as a transitional deacon, Paul looks forward to baptisms and welcoming people into the church. His assignment as transitional deacon will be at St. Bernadette Church in Cedartown GA.

Gray Plunkett Lost His Good Friend

Our Sir Knight Gray Plunkett is back in Benin, Africa.

Last month he had happiness with newborn puppies. This month he writes us regarding losing a best friend suddenly.

He regularly furnishes us with a copy of his Plunkett Press newsletter to keep us abreast of his progress with his own charitable projects.

Please pray for his success and for his friend. 12

See story on next page. The Plunkett Press — Sad News

Dear Brother Knights,

I write you today with a heavy heart. My neighbor, friend and chauffeur, Abdulmane, had a stroke (it appears) Wednesday evening and was taken to the Catholic hospital in Djougou (about an hour away). I didn't learn about this until yesterday afternoon, and less than 30 minutes later I learned that he had passed away. It was a huge shock for me.

With our numerous adventures of travels to Cotonou, Lomé, Accra and places in- between, we became quite close. The last trip was to Djougou on 29 May. We went to the above mentioned hospital to see the newborn child of his son, and we brought the infant, mother and grandmother back with us to Sèmèrè--a day of much joy. (Note: I no longer have a car, I depended on him to take me whenever I needed to go somewhere.)

Here's a picture the last time he took me to the airport (Lomé, Togo) to return to the U.S. in November 2019.

It's difficult to imagine that he will not take me to Cotonou in October to renew my Residency card and then to catch my return flight to the U.S. on 11 October.

I am in much grief along with my neighbors here. He leaves behind three wives and numerous children and grandchildren.

Thank you for your prayers. Yours in Christ, Gray

14 Msgr. Donald Kiernan Golf Tournament The Mary Our Queen Parish is sponsoring another Msgr. Donald Kiernan Golf Tournament on Monday October 25th. They have asked for our help honoring the administrator of both our parishes. The golf course (Bears Best) is one of Atlanta's finest , designed by Jack Nicklaus (The Golden Bear).

We hope that those All Saints brothers that expressed interest last year and the year before will sign up again for this one. Save the October 25th date.

If interested in playing, send an email to [email protected].

We are maintaining an All Saints list for future contact.

No firm commitment at this time.

Open to the public.

15 Donation to Gift of Grace House The Gift of Grace House was opened in 1994 by the Sisters of Charity as a home for women with AIDS. The founder of the Order, St. Mother Terese of Calcutta, had visited the home in 1995 before her death in 1997.

Our council had learned of the need the sisters had for a new transportation van. The council had held musical concerts in the gym and parking lot at All Saints before the pandemic to raise money toward that end.

Monsignor Marren travels to the home every Monday morning at 7 AM to say Mass there. He has done this for years. Our Grand Knight Woody Jones asked if he could accompany Monsignor and present the sisters with a check for $7,000 toward their needs on June 22nd.

The nuns were very appreciative, and Woody announced that they could use the money for whatever they needed most, since a van costs considerably more. The check presentation had to be outside the home, because photos were not allowed inside. We thank Woody and Monsignor for their fine efforts and apologize for the blurry photo.

In Memoriam As we delve into the 2021 year, we remember the extraordinary number of All Saints brothers who have passed since the 2019 holiday season. We’ve lost 20 brothers since the year-end 2019 holiday season.

In 2019, we almost made it through the entire year without the death of a council brother. Then, we had three consecutive holiday deaths just before the end of 2019.

In 2020, we were not so fortunate. All Saints lost a total of nine brothers, setting a sad yearly record for the council since its founding in 1994. Now 2021 could break that sad record.

What often goes unnoticed are the significant numbers of children, wives, and widows of the council who passed in 2019, 2020, and 2021. This neared the number of brothers passing.

Now 2021 has started sadly with Eight consecutive member deaths.

Please make it a practice to keep in your prayers, our sick and deceased men and women of Council 11402. Note that all the 2020 deceased members and family were remembered at the State Convention Mass this past May. The 2021 deceased people will be remembered next year at the Convention. Memento Mori

Note: Deceased members marked “SK” are 4th degree Sir Knights, and will be remembered with their names engraved on chalices presented to newly-ordained22 priests (some of which will be our very own council-supported seminarians.)
