Welcome to YOUTH RADIO 2019

As Chair of the Eastbourne Education Business Partnership it gives me great pleasure in welcoming you to Eastbourne Youth Radio (EYR) 2019.

There are few projects which bring together so many schools, students, teachers and employers in the intense and fulfilling experience of 3 days of live radio broadcasting direct from the studios of our partner College, Eastbourne Campus. Furthermore, EYR provides the whole Eastbourne community with a local project that they can feel a part of, with parents, grandparents and friends all tuning in to 87.7FM or via www.eyr.org.uk to hear the programmes and contributions from their families and their schools.

EYR is also notable for its longevity and sustainability, and this year we celebrate the 19th year of the event, an achievement in itself, and testament to its value, popularity, and its ongoing relevance to the curriculum and personal development of students. This year, in excess of 1,200 individual students will be involved, representing schools and colleges across the area, supported by the sponsorship of around 40 businesses and other local organisations, a really wonderful example of the collaboration between education, commerce and the community.

And a note for your calendars and diaries: BFS (Big Futures Show), the town’s largest employability, skills and jobs event, and another project of the Education Business Partnership, returns 28th April 2020 for the 5th year.

Dr. Steven Goss-Turner Chair, Eastbourne Education Business Partnership

2 Eastbourne Youth Radio 2019 www.eyr.org.uk/listen-online ON AIR!

Eastbourne Youth Radio (EYR) returns to the airwaves for the 19th year from Wednesday 13th until Friday 15th November on 87.7FM and online at www.eyr.org.uk. Broadcast from studios at – Eastbourne, EYR sees students from local schools and other organizations, present over 50 hours of programmes. The students, aged from 5–19, present their radio shows covering a wide range of topics – much of it live. This year’s broadcast coincides with several notable events. Namely; Anti-Bullying Week, Global Entrepreneurship Week, UK Parliament Week and finally, BBC Children in Need. We will be covering all of these during the packed 3-day schedule.

EYR is only made possible by the considerable support and involvement of the many businesses and organisations that are listed in the pages that follow. We are delighted to confirm East Sussex Fire & Rescue as lead sponsor for 2019 that will be featured on EYR’s launch program and later in the schedule. We all know the brave and often very dangerous work that they do for us every day in our communities. As sponsor of EYR, they are well placed to speak to young people on a range of issues including road, water and home safety. East Sussex Fire and Rescue will also be promoting their cadet scheme that is being rolled out across East Sussex.

Working with Eastbourne’s Youth and Community Safety Partnerships, EYR will be promoting Anti-Bullying Week and this year’s theme, ‘Change Starts With US’. We will also be looking at ‘County Lines and Cuckooing’ where vulnerable young people are being cajoled into selling drugs. Stephen Lloyd, prospective parliamentary candidate, will be hosting his ‘Student Question Time’ following UK Parliament Week and the team from Radio DGH will join us to talk about their invaluable work across the wards.

Southern Water is back in the studio to talk about our ‘Unflushables’. The Observatory Science Centre will be talking all things science; St. Wilfrid’s Hospice will be promoting their volunteering scheme; The Beacon will be getting us ready for Christmas shopping and The Royal Hippodrome Theatre will appear on our stage.

EYR was never about creating hundreds of radio ‘presenters’ but about enabling young people to research, produce, present and perform their own material in association with community partners for a family audience. From this they learn and develop a whole range of skills that they will find helpful in future life. We hope that you enjoy listening to their work over the three days.

Eastbourne Youth Radio 2019 15 East Sussex College Group: East Sussex College: changing the face of education Further Education is changing. There are more opportunities than ever before for students, and East Sussex College (ESC) is proud to be leading that change in the South East. Students applying to college can still choose to study A-Levels, vocational qualifications or an apprenticeship. But from September 2020, they can also choose to study exciting new T-Level courses. The Department for Education has chosen ESC to be one of the first colleges to pilot T-Levels in the UK. The first three T-Level pathways available to study at ESC are Construction, Digital and Education. By 2023 there will be over 25 T-Level courses available.

Like A-Levels, T-Level courses are two years long, and a course is equivalent to three A-Level qualifications. Students have the chance to study one subject in detail, which is perfect if you know the industry you want to go into. T-Levels also include a 45-day industry placement, so students are effectively prepared for work in the roles employers need to fill! New T-Levels are a fantastic progression route into employment, an apprenticeship, or university.

For businesses, the college is looking to work with new employers big and small, to support students in their industry placement during their course. Please contact the college to find out more about T-Levels, whether you are a student or employer.

Vocational courses offered at ESC have also evolved. Pick up the brand new ESC course guide or view it online and you will see that courses now sit within ‘families’ – specialist pathways that will equip students with knowledge, skills and behaviours transferable to any specialism within that family. In brief, vocational courses are divided into pathways: Business & Service Industries; Construction, Engineering and Motor Vehicle; Creative, Digital, Performing Arts & Music; and Health, Care, Sport & Public Services.

East Sussex College is delighted to be leading this new change in further education and is excited for the opportunities it presents to both students and employers. For more information please visit www.escg.ac.uk or come along to ESC Live! – Interactive Open Events (26th November in Eastbourne; 21st November and 10th December in Hastings and 5th December 2019 in Lewes).
