This covers a lot of years quickly. Both FDR and Eleanor did a lot to help people and the country at large, but their private lives, especially Eleanor's, was so sad. Most interesting to me: their love of communal living combined with their fierce independence and their personal insecurities. But her careful attention to the details of their marriage provides significant insight into this important aspect of their lives and the way in which it shaped their careers. I especially enjoyed reading a letter from a very mature Eleanor to a man in his early 30's where she told him she wanted to be with him on his birthday and spank him and tuck him in at night. Both seemed to respect and understand the other fully, and both had the capacity to accept that neither could be everything to the other, that their relationship worked so well because it had the scope to include others - whether it was Franklin's adoring women or Eleanor's passionate female friendships.
