Simon J. G. Burton v Abstract While Richard Baxter (1615-91) is well known and rightly held in high esteem for his practical divinity and his evangelistic zeal, he has hitherto been conspicuously neglected as a theologian. In particular there have been no major studies of him with respect to the renewed paradigm of Protestant Scholasticism and none at all of his Methodus Theologiae (1681), which represents the fruit of a lifetime of theological reflection and study and which is arguably, in both scope and vision, one of the last great Summas of English scholastic divinity. This thesis focuses on the Methodus and on Baxter‟s theological method, which he took, though imperfect, to be the closest to the true Scripture method of theology that anyone had yet come. Baxter believed that every level of (active) created reality reflected the impress of God‟s Triune being in metaphysical composition, structure and activity. This he described, following the Italian metaphysicist Tommaso Campanella, in terms of the divine primalities or principles of Power, Wisdom and Love. In the Methodus these insights are systematised into a kind of Trinitarian logic. Baxter held that human reason should be sanctified in order to conform to the Trinitarian structure of created reality, and therefore espoused a method of trichotomising organised according to these same divine principles, derivative of both Ramist and Lullist method. This thesis argues that the whole of Baxter‟s mature thought is structured in a Trinitarian fashion according to his own „hallowed logic‟ and that two themes, often interlinked, are the key to interpreting his thought: the metaphysics of the divine principles and the Christian‟s baptismal covenant with the Triune God. Furthermore it examines Baxter‟s analogical ascent from the general vestigia Trinitatis present in the whole created order through the special vestigium of man‟s soul fashioned in the image of God and finally to the Trinity itself. This detailed exposition provides the basis, in the concluding chapter, for an examination of the whole of the Methodus and a demonstration that this represents a methodological unfolding of the covenant between the believer and God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in the threefold Kingdom of Nature, Grace and Glory. In this way the Methodus may vi be seen as having taken its inspiration from the Theo-Politica (1659) of Baxter‟s friend George Lawson. Finally this thesis concludes that Baxter‟s thought has pronounced Scotist and Nominalist accents. His Scotism in particular runs deep and has strong ties with his Trinitarian thought, which is especially significant in light of the recent increasingly vocal discussions of the Scotist character of Protestant Scholasticism. Overall therefore it is suggested that Baxter is a neglected figure who deserves to be rediscovered and whose mature theology represents a fascinating reconstrual of biblical ideas according to a Trinitarian and scholastic paradigm. vii Acknowledgements I would first like to thank my principal supervisor Dr Susan Hardman Moore, for all her help and advice over the course of my doctoral studies and especially for her warm encouragement and all the time she devoted to reading the various drafts of my thesis. Please allow me to introduce you to the project by saying just a few things. If you ask someone what Covenant Theology is and if it is a good or bad thing, you will likely hear lots of different answers. It is fairly common for evangelicals to respond by either saying they do not know what Covenant Theology is or by describing it as something unbiblical and relating to a particular view regarding millennialism, baptism, or Israel. There are three major problems with such responses. First, classic Covenant Theology is essentially concerned with matters of sin and salvation, not something else. Second, the biblical support for such things as the federal headship of Adam and Jesus is strong (federal being from the Latin foedus meaning covenant). Third, when Covenant Theology is rejected, justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone is at best in serious jeopardy. My dissertation is a promotion and defense of classic Covenant Theology. I have written out of a pastoral passion to help people understand human history federally/covenantally just as the Apostle Paul did as he wrote inspired Scripture (see Romans 5:12-21). Likewise, I have written in order to demonstrate the vital connection between Covenant Theology and justification by faith alone, the doctrine that is so commonly compromised by rejecters of the federal perspective.

The painter’s products stand before us as though they were alive, but if you question them, they maintain a most majestic silence. It is the same with written words; they seem to talk to you as though they were intelligent, but if you ask them anything about what they say, from a desire to be instructed, they go on telling you just the same thing forever. Plato, Collected Dialogues Ramon Llull (1232-1316) was a vernacular author who shaped the literary, cultural, and religious landscape of medieval Iberia, however his literary works in Catalan are often times excluded from discussions of medieval reading and writing practices. This essay will examine how Llull’s vernacular writings contribute to the evolving definition of translatio studii et imperii, or the transference of knowledge and power, providing insight into how medieval knowledge and power were formed, shared, and promoted. I will critically assess the thresholds of the persistence of traditions that imply that translatio was unilateral or one-dimensional. Specifically, Llull’s Arbre de filosofia d’amor (1298) provides necessary insight into how he developed his own theories of reading and writing practices, and shows why Llull remained a vital influence on the literary and cultural production of medieval Iberia.

But where and what did they debate? And why did they debate the issues they did? It is not difficult to find brief descriptions or summaries of their public debate on free-will; this book provides the first comprehensive account not only of that debate, but also of their private quarrel and hostile relations during both the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and Interregnum. Hobbes and Bramhall argued about much more than ‘liberty’ and ‘necessity’ (free-will and determinism), and the following account offers a detailed historical expla- nation of their debating those and other issues. By situating their long and acrimonious, private and public, dispute within its contemporary context we may come to view the whole quarrel as a by-product or collateral intel- lectual skirmish of those rebellions and wars in the British Isles. These topics have been widely discussed in relation to his art. Scholars also frequently examine the relationship between Tàpies’s work and Eastern thought as a major theme throughout his career. While several commentators have noted the influence of Western medieval mystic Ramon Llull (c. 1232 - c. 1315) on Tàpies’s art, this topic has not been given sustained critical attention. This thesis paper argues that the relationship between Tàpies and Llull is not merely stylistic. A close examination of Tàpies’s writings reveals a deeper metaphysical connection between Tàpies’s methodology as an artist and Llull’s methodology as a theologian. I argue that Tàpies employs Llull’s metaphysical model of the “Art of Combination” in his artwork to produce a deeper meaning for the viewer. I demonstrate this claim by an appeal to Tàpies’s writings as well as a formal analysis of his paintings and prints. Finally, I argue that Tàpies’s use of Llull’s Art of Combination can be situated in Tàpies’s wider system of a secular religion, where art has replaced the social function that religion once filled.

November 2017 From the Editor The doctrine of man is central to the modern debate about sexual identity. The rejection of transcendent reality by the modern mind sets people free to seek to redefine the human. In my editorial essay, “Diminishing Humanity: How the Modern World Is Dehumanizing Us,” I explore the theme of dehumanization in modernity. Carl Trueman reviews the work of a relatively unknown twentieth-century Italian political and cultural philosopher in his review of Augusto Del Noce, The Crisis of Modernity. His exploration of the disenchantment of modern life in terms of an assumed materialism is profound. The human quest for rest without God leads to the exhaustion of hope. God has designed it that way, so that we may not find rest outside of resting in him. The Sabbath trajectory of human life is meant to drive us to our Creator, in whom true rest may only be found. I explore this theme in George Herbert’s poem “The Pulley.” John Muether continues the celebration of Reformation 500 as he explores the confessional development of the Reformation with “Reformed Confessions: Canons of the Synod of Dort (1619).” This demonstrates the doctrinal consistency of biblically based ecclesiastical symbols forged in the ecumenical spirit of a truly ecumenical endeavor. In another area of historical exploration, Danny Olinger gives us chapter 10 of his Vos biography, “Geerhardus Vos: Grace and Glory,” in which he explores the sermonic production of Vos.

In a world increasingly globalized, interconnected in real time and with important migration flows, it is very important that a professional knows, communicates, works and lives with people belonging to different cultures, sometimes very different from his own. For this reason, it is essential that in his formative stage, at home, or outside, the student interact with people who come from other parts of the world and, without abandoning his roots, values and beliefs, is open to them. Obviously, to speak other languages is important, especially English. However, speak other languages is necessary, but not sufficient. What matters is to be open-minded and wishing to understand the diversity and learn from it. Aware of its relevance, the University Ramon Llull (URL) gives a great importance to the international dimension with the goal of offering to our students the possibility to end up being good professionals able to do their job inside and outside their country, regardless of the sector. To make it possible, our centres have many agreements with foreign universities in all continents with which they exchange students, develop joint programs, conduct research or make benchmark. Being the Ramon Llull University (URL) a federation of schools, we harmonize the overall strategy with the one of each URL member. The main goal is to give to our community (students, professors, staff…) the opportunity to have a truly international experience. To select a university partner, we look at several aspects like, for example, their prestige, the disciplines they offer, the level of the demand of our community to develop exchanges or projects with them; where they are located, for geographical balance and security reasons; the structure of their programs or their research lines.
