  • SOUTH WEST Newquay Beach Newquay, Facing the Atlantic Ocean
SOUTH WEST Newquay Beach Newquay, facing the Atlantic Ocean on the North Cornwall Coast, is the largest resort in Cornwall. There are many different beaches to choose from including: Towan Beach, Fistral Beach, Lusty Glaze, Holywell Bay and Crantock. Reachable by a stiff walk from the village of West Pentire, is Porth Joke, also known as Polly Joke, a delightful suntrap of a beach, surrounded by low cliffs, some with sea caves, unspoilt and popular with families. A stream runs down the valley, and open fields and low dunes lead right onto the head of the beach. The beach is popular with body boarders. Often cattle from the nearby Kelseys, an ancient area of springy turfed grassland, rich in wildflowers, can be found drinking from the stream. Beyond the headland is Holywell Bay arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in Cornwall, backed by sand dunes framed by the Gull Rocks off shore. Reachable by a 15 minute walk from the Car Park. It is a nice walk west along the Coast to Penhale Point, with superb views across Perran Bay, with Perranporth in the middle distance. Nearest Travelodge: Stay at the St Austell Travelodge, Pentewan Road, St Austell, Cornwall, PL25 5BU from as little as £29 per night, best deals can be found online at www.travelodge.co.uk Clifton Suspension Bridge- Bristol The Clifton Suspension Bridge, is the symbol of the city of Bristol. • An Introduction to Cornish Place Names
. * AN INTRODUCTION TO CORNISH PLACE NAMES \ BY P. A. S. POOL, M.A., F.S.A. Second (revised) edition 1971 Obtainable from: ' The Author at 37 Morrab Road, Penzance, Cornwall Price 6p V ‘V CORNISH PLACE NAMES P. A. s. POOL C.ORNISH is a Celtic language, closely akin to Welsh and Breton, which remained the ordinary spoken language of most Cornish people until about 1500 and of a steadily decreasing minority until the late 18th century, its last survival being confined to small areas of the Penwith and Lizard peninsulas in the far west of Cornwall. Dolly Pentreath of Mousehole, who died in 1777, was not, as is commonly believed, the last to speak Cornish, but was certainly one of the last native speakers, and by 1800 at the very latest Cornish had finally died out as a spoken language, its revival as such being then more than a century in the future and totally unforeseen. It never- theless survived in traditionally remembered sayings and phrases, in hundreds of dialect words, but principally in thousands of names of places. Not only every village and farm, but also every field and prominent natural feature had its own name, and in the far west where the language survived the longest these names are nearly all Cornish, the few English ones being mostly modern. Generally, the further east in Cornwall one goes, the earlier Cornish gave‘ place to English and the smaller is the proportion of Cornish names, until in Tamar-side parishes they are a small minority. In the east, Cornish names often contain certain words as they were spelt at an earlier stage in the development of the language than those in the west, re- fiecting the earlier date at which use of the language ceased; thus nans, valley, is almost invariably found in names as nance in the west and mmt (the earlier form) in the east.

  • Launceston-And-Districts-Fallen-From-Both-World-Wars..Pdf
This is not a complete record of all those that fell during the two wars, with some of the fallen having no information available whatsoever. However there are 222 names from within the district that I have been able to provide a narrative for and this booklet hopefully will provide a lasting memory for future generations to view and understand the lives behind the names on the various memorials around Launceston. It has not been easy piecing together the fragments of information particularly from the first world war where many records were destroyed in the blitz of the second world war, but there are many resources now available that do make the research a little easier. Hopefully over time the information that is lack- ing in making this a complete story will be discovered and I can bring all the re- cords up to date. Of course there have been many people that have helped and I would like to thank Peter Bailey, Claudine Malaquin, Dennis Middleton, Jim Edwards, Martin Kel- land, Grant Lethbridge Morris and Michael Willis for their invaluable help in compiling this homage plus the resources that are freely available at Launceston Library. My hope is that the people will find this a fascinating story to all these souls that bravely gave their lives in the service of their country and that when we come to remember them at the various remembrance services, we will actually know who they were. Roger Pyke 28th of October 2014. Launceston’s Fallen from World War One William Henry ADAMS William was born in 1886 at 14 Hillpark Cottages, Launceston to Richard and Jane Adams.
