Soap followed: Brookside, Family Affairs, Queenie in Making Out and, most recently Coronation Street's Jackie Dobbs. The real Margi Clarke tells it as it is...There's the day she was chatted up by a Beatle; the time 'nurse' Clarke gave Jack Nicholson 'medical advice' with a difference. The laughs behind turning down the Sheriff of Nottingham.Working with The Pet Shop Boys, The Sex Pistols and Paul Gascoigne's striking offer. The day she offered Kenny Dalglish a Match of the Day that can't be televised. Get a back-stage pass to the parties and rock and roll circus - and how her own personal re-hab treatment from drugs worked with a 'soul rinse.' This is the autobiography of Margi Clarke - survivor. Show biz survival guides that will make you laugh and cry in equal measure. It's a tale of a girl who can't say no ...to a challenge always defiantly coming through smiling. • Key Note Paper
Edge Hill University Institute for Creative Enterprise Independent States Conference 4th and 5th September 2014 KEY NOTE – Prof Roger Shannon ‘John Paul George and Quango…’ I am pleased to be giving this key note, stepping at short notice into the shoes of Jonnie Turpie who had to cancel his appearance due to commitments abroad. Delighted also to be sharing the key note role with long standing colleagues and collaborators in independent film such as Sue Clayton and Eddie Berg, whom I’ve known respectively since the late ‘70’s (Sue’s film ‘Song of the Shirt’) and late ‘80’s (Eddie’s Festival, Video Positive). My talk is titled ‘John Paul George and Quango…’…a magical mystery tour of a title I think you’ll agree; however, much that I will talk about continues the very interesting theme of independence which the panels and speakers today have discussed in great detail. My focus will be on independent film. As a film funder, financier, producer and executive producer, I have been involved with a range of feature films and short films, and the decisions I have taken have given films the green light, or left them on the starting grid. The producer is very much the 'poacher', tussling with the funder/financier, aka the 'gamekeeper.' Having been on both sides of the fence, this paper discusses the contrasting range of skills needed in this interplay – the developmental, creative, financial and strategic judgments you have to make. Is the script 'oven ready'? Or does it need more cooking? In what way has the director shown talent before? Are these

Stephen Woolley, 22/03/12 Stephen Woolley was a co-director and producer at Palace Pictures, 1982-1992. Interviewers: Justin Smith, Laura Mayne. JS: …And you know our interest in your career as a major figure through that period, is the sense of, how, as an independent producer, your relationship with Channel 4 has evolved, and how significant you saw them as having been, and still being, from a producer’s point of view. So that’s the kind of background to…where we’re coming from really, but we’ve got a number of obviously more specific questions. I think we’d like to start by asking you if you like, I know it’s a story that’s been told before, but in a sense how the whole uh Palace thing emerged from you know your running Scala, the cinema, and so on and so forth, so how did you get into first distributing, and then making movies? SW: Yeah sure, did you get some tea or anything? JS: It’s on the way. SW: ….Um yeah I think…how long is this going to take..? JS: [Laughs] How long have you got? SW: Well it’s interesting because my career is inextricably involved with Channel 4. Channel 4 rather than Film4, um because of a very weird quirk, which was that I was running a cinema called The Scala in London, in a place called Tottenham Street. And we were primarily owned by Virgin, which was Richard Branston and Nik Powell, who were the 2 partners of Virgin Records, and they had been slightly hoodwinked into becoming investors about a year or two before I took over.
