Business Meeting Period, with George Beverly Shea July 11, 2018 Kurt Kaiser, Guest Musician on Sunday, July 15 Kurt Kaiser, a member of DaySpring Baptist Church and a vital member of the Waco Worship at Lake Shore community, spent his early days in Chicago. Helping our neighbors in Waco Sharing a Little Cool Breeze You can help make this summer a more bearable for those less fortunate. If you’d like to bring a new or gently used fan, please drop it by the church on Sunday or during office hours. Boxed fans are good choices, and relatively inexpensive. The fans will be equally distributed between Meals on Wheels and Caritas as a collaborative effort to support older adults. In some instances, your gift could be life-saving. Let’s help get things off to a cooler start with fans for some of our older adults. Gathering for Summer meals for Waco students Craig Nash of THI told us about Red Oak, an apartment community that needs help this summer. It is a mixed-income property with a built-in summer and afterschool program (New Life Alliance). Because of its relatively remote location and small numbers of kids they serve (around 20), the school district can’t serve them summer meals. They are looking for some help with shelf-stable food items that can be used to make meals for the summer program. We hope you will pick up some items to fill their shelves and place them in the basket at the front door of the sanctuary through the summer. Here are some ideas: cereal, applesauce, pasta and spaghetti sauce, two loaves of bread and canned tuna, a bag of beans, a bag of rice, and tortillas pancake mix and syrup, crackers and almond butter (no peanut butter), jelly Summer Sabbath Mission Waco Annual School Supply Drive Barbara Hobbs contributed the picture below on the road trip she and Willie and Glenda took in late May. “The Savior Is Waiting To Enter Your Heart” 3 AUTHOR: Ralph Carmichael May 28th 1927 TUNE: CARMICHAEL COMPOSER: Ralph Carmichael May 28th 1927 Ralph Carmichael was born May 28th 1927 in Quincy, Illinois. He is an author, composer and arranger of both secular and sacred music and a forerunner of what we may call contemporary Christian Church music. He is married to his wife Marvella. His daughter, Carol Parks is an artist.1. Near the end of the 50’s when music was starting to become more Rock oriented, he caught the attention of Nat King Cole and Capitol Records; their joint effort was eventually a work called “The Magic of Christmas”. Carmichael worked with others of Cole’s endeavors through mid-60’s at which point Nat King Cole died of Lung Cancer in 1965. One of the more ambitious projects Carmichael and Cole partnered on was before the singers death was Nat King Cole Sings My Fair Lady (1964). Carmichael arranged for other performers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Stan Kenton, and Roger Williams among others including Sue Raney's comeback album All By Myself in 1963. Carmichael even became music advisor and director for the I Love Lucy show during the last few years of the show. But, his most prolific work is clearly in the arena of Christian music. Some would even hang the moniker Father of Contemporary Christian Music on Carmichael because of his pop-rock style and use of 7th chords and ‘sing-able’ lyric flair. He founded Light Records and endeared himself to the Jesus People movement in the late 60’s and 70’s.

This study narrates the import of rock music into church sanctuaries across America via the rise of contemporary worship music (CWM). While white evangelicals derided rock n’ roll as the “devil’s music” in the 1950s, it slowly made its way into their churches and beyond over the next fifty years, emerging as a multi-million dollar industry by the twenty-first century. This study is a cultural history of CWM, chronicling the rise of rock music in the worship life of American Christians. Pulling from several different primary and secondary sources, I argue that three main motivations fueled the rise of CWM in America: the desire to reach the lost, to commune in emotional intimacy with God, and to grow the flock.
