  • DATES of TRIALS Until October 1775, and Again from December 1816
DATES OF TRIALS Until October 1775, and again from December 1816, the printed Proceedings provide both the start and the end dates of each sessions. Until the 1750s, both the Gentleman’s and (especially) the London Magazine scrupulously noted the end dates of sessions, dates of subsequent Recorder’s Reports, and days of execution. From December 1775 to October 1816, I have derived the end dates of each sessions from newspaper accounts of the trials. Trials at the Old Bailey usually began on a Wednesday. And, of course, no trials were held on Sundays. ***** NAMES & ALIASES I have silently corrected obvious misspellings in the Proceedings (as will be apparent to users who hyper-link through to the trial account at the OBPO), particularly where those misspellings are confirmed in supporting documents. I have also regularized spellings where there may be inconsistencies at different appearances points in the OBPO. In instances where I have made a more radical change in the convict’s name, I have provided a documentary reference to justify the more marked discrepancy between the name used here and that which appears in the Proceedings. ***** AGE The printed Proceedings almost invariably provide the age of each Old Bailey convict from December 1790 onwards. From 1791 onwards, the Home Office’s “Criminal Registers” for London and Middlesex (HO 26) do so as well. However, no volumes in this series exist for 1799 and 1800, and those for 1828-33 inclusive (HO 26/35-39) omit the ages of the convicts. I have not comprehensively compared the ages reported in HO 26 with those given in the Proceedings, and it is not impossible that there are discrepancies between the two.

  • Splicing Repression Is a Major Function of Tdp-43 in Motor Neurons
SPLICING REPRESSION IS A MAJOR FUNCTION OF TDP-43 IN MOTOR NEURONS: THERAPEUTIC IMPLICATIONS FOR AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS by Aneesh N. Donde A thesis submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland May, 2018 Title: Splicing Repression is a Major Function of Tdp-43 in Motor Neurons Ph.D Dissertator: Aneesh N. Donde Ph.D Advisor: Philip C. Wong, Ph.D Abstract Nuclear depletion of TDP-43, an RNA binding protein which serves to protect the transcriptome by repressing aberrant splicing, may underlie neurodegeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). As multiple functions have been ascribed to TDP-43, whether splicing repression is its major role in motor neurons – that may be compromised in ALS – remains to be established. Here, we show that TDP-43 mediated splicing repression is central to the physiology of motor neurons. To validate TDP-43 mediated splicing repression as a therapeutic target, an AAV9-mediated gene delivery approach was employed to deliver a chimeric protein comprised of the N-terminal RNA recognition domain of TDP-43 fused to an unrelated splicing repressor (RAVER1) to mice lacking TDP-43 in motor neurons. This strategy allowed long-term expression of the repressor without any untoward effects, delayed the onset and slowed the progression of disease, and extended survival. In treated mice, evidence of aberrant splicing was markedly decreased and accompanied by amelioration of motor neuron loss. These findings establish that splicing repression is a principal role of TDP-43 in motor neurons and support the idea that loss of TDP-43-mediated splicing repression represents a key pathogenic mechanism underling motor neuron loss, validating a novel mechanism-based therapeutic strategy for ALS.

  • MS 69 Papers of Christopher Collins, Mid to Late Seventeenth Century, C.1800-75
1 MS 69 Papers of Christopher Collins, mid to late seventeenth century, c.1800-75 Christopher Collins entered the service of the First Duke of Wellington in 1824 and remained as his confidential servant for the remainder of the Dukes life, continuing in the service of the Second Duke. He travelled with Wellington on most of his journeys, including Wellington’s journey to St. Petersburg in February to April 1826. The collection that forms MS 69 was for the most part separated from the papers of the First Duke of Wellington that form MS 61 during the 1860s, when that collection was weeded extensively, and which were preserved by Collins rather than being destroyed. Other papers include a sample of Wellington’s letters and notes to Collins, which provide an interesting insight into the organization and running of the Duke’s household. The Collection divides into four groups: (i) political correspondence of the First Duke of Wellington, 1807-1852 (ii) correspondence of Wellington with Lieutenant Colonel Gurwood, editor of his Dispatches (iii) Wellington’s correspondence with Christopher Collins and (iv) papers of Christopher Collins. The collection was grouped in five portfolios and his arrangement has been preserved. It was acquired by the University with the assistance of the Museums and Galleries Commission/Victoria and Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund and the Pilgrim Trust at Messrs. Woolley and Wallis’ sale at Salisbury on 13 November 1991. MS 69 1/1 Letter from Prince Albert to Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington. Prince Albert conveys Queen Victoria’s approval of Prince Albert’s design of military cap.
