January

On January 1, The lecture of Employment and Resource Allocation: Theoretical and Practical

Issues delivered by Mr. Li Yining, a member of Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s

Political Consultative Conference, professor of Perking University and well-known economist was held at the branch library and hosted by deputy director Zhang Yanbo. Up to now, the Wenjin

Forum had been successfully held for 249 times, four Wenjin Lectures were published and received favorable comments by the society.

On January 14, we held Adviser Working Meeting of the National Library of China at No. 313 meeting room. Vice chairman of the Chinese Writers Association Wang Meng, researcher of

Institute of Chinese History of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Li Xueqin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Li Youping, academician of the Chinese Academy of

Sciences, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and deputy director of Science

Technical Committee of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China ⅠGu Songfen, academician of the Department of Technical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and consultant of

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation Liang Sili, professor of Peking Union

Medical College Zhao Mian, director of our library Ren Jiyu, secretary of the NLC Party

Committee and deputy director of the NLC Zhan Furui, deputy director of the NLC Zhang

Yafang, deputy director of the NLC Chen Li and directors of relevant divisions and departments participated in the meeting. In the meeting, Ren Jiyu, on behalf of the National Library of China, expressed sincere appreciation for the support of Consultants in the whole year. Zhan Furui reported main work of 2004 and the key points of the work in 2005 to the consultants; the consultants expressed acknowledge to various work of our library and posed good opinions and suggestions concerning adviser scope expansion, preservation and conservation, and publications acquisitions of the National Library of China.

On January 15, Historical Culture Lecture for Ministry-level Leaders was held at NLC Concert

Hall. The Central and National Authority Working Committee, the Ministry of Culture and the

Chinese Academy of Social Sciences were the sponsors and our library was the organizer. Director of the Central Nationalities' Orchestra and Secretary of the Party Committee delivered the lecture of Chinese Music Instrument and Instrumental Music Art, and over one hundred of ministry-level leaders from central and national authorities participated in the lectures.

On January 20, protecting National Treasures with Kind Hearts, Conserving Book Spirit with

Skilled Hands—2004 Recovery Work Exhibition was held in the Collected Treasure Display

Room, where the achievements of 2004 ancient book recovery work of our library were displayed, recovery techniques and common knowledge were introduced, meanwhile, the first group of 30 donated documents of 2005 were disclosed.

On January 22, we held the second Wenjin Reading Salon of the National Library of China,

Scholar and Explorer Yang Lian made a speech of Exploring Lost Civilization, and nearly 200 persons participated in the event.

On January 26, Mobilization Meeting of Progressiveness Education of Party Members was held at

NLC Concert Hall. Party member and vice minister that was responsible for the contact work concerning Progressiveness Education of Party members Zhou Heping and leader of the third monitoring group of the Ministry of Culture Cao Haitao attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhan Furui delivered a mobilization speech of carrying out progressiveness education of our library. The meeting was hosted by deputy secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang. All members of the monitoring group of the Ministry of Culture, the directors of the leading group and office of the progressiveness education of the Party members, all Party members, party candidates, representatives of democratic parties and high-level intellectuals, totaling about 700 persons, participated in the meeting.

On January 27, the signing ceremony between our library and the portal system MetaLib/SFX of Israel EX Libris Ltd. was held at the Red Hall. After the system was put in use, it would generally improve the technical level of our reader services, meeting the variety of demands of the readers at the maximum.

February

On February 1, Retired Leader Spring Festival Gathering was held at the NLC Concert Hall, secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhan Furui, deputy director Zhang

Yanbo, deputy secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, deputy director Chen Li and over 300 retired leaders participated in the gathering. Zhan Furui reported main work of 2004, working key points of our library in 2005 and the progressiveness education of the Party members to the senior. He hoped the old comrades would continue to concern the development of the librarianshipof the National Library of China.

On February 3, the signing ceremony of the NLC Phase II Project & National Digital Library

Project was held in the Wenjin Hall, indicating that the construction of the project entered a substantial stage.

On February 5, the NLC Security Work Conclusion and Reward Meeting, 2004 was held in the

Multi-functional Hall. Secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhan Furui, deputy director Zhang Yanbo, director of Security Division of the General Office of the Ministry of Culture Bu Shizhong as well as leaders of divisions and departments, excellent security and individuals, and all security staff of our library participated in the meeting. Decision about

Conferring “Excellent Security Institution” on the NLC, 2004 Decision about Commending

Excellent Security Collectives and Individuals, were read at the meeting, and excellent collectives and individuals of 2004 were awarded certificates.

On February 7, secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhan Furui, on behalf of the

National Library of China, presented nearly 500 new books to construction sites as gifts of the

Spring Festival, of which the contents involved agricultural sciences, literature, history, geography, economy, residents’ civility, etc.

On February 9, in the light of the commitment of opening the library in 365 days a year, our library continued to open during the period of Spring Festival and received 33,304 person-times.

During the holiday, we also arranged exhibitions, lectures, free video watching and free internet surfing, which were welcomed by the readers.

That same day, Collected New Year Pictures Exhibition of the National Library of China was held in the Zizhu Hall. The displayed New Year pictures were full of joy and happiness. The pictures’ lines were clear; colors were distinct, reflecting the good wishes and rich life of the public. And the exhibition lasted until February 23.

From February 24 to February 26, our library held Massed Study Class of Progressiveness

Education of the Party Member Leaders, deputy director Zhan Furui, deputy director Zhang Yanbo, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, deputy director Chen

Li and middle level leaders of the whole library participated in the study. Through massed study, the Party leaders deeply realized the significance of the construction of progressiveness education of the Party members, comprehensively mastered the basic connotation of the progressiveness education, expressed that they would hold the event well with high sense of political responsibility, good mental state and strong working style continuously.

On February 27, our library held the Third Wenjin Reading Salon of the National Library of China, researcher of the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, tutor of Ph.D. students and deputy director-general of the Chinese Society for the History of

Science and Technology Chen Jiujin delivered a speech of Exploring Mysterious Constellation

World.

This month, before the Spring Festival, our library conveyed greetings to over 570 retired staff of the library in various ways and brought the concern and care of the Party and the serving staff of the whole library to the retired people.

This month, the construction of the NLC Phase IIProject & National Digital Library Project that received much attention had been launched comprehensively. In order to construct the project well, we would manage strictly, organize carefully, with the project construction as an opportunity, comprehensively boosted the development of various causes of our library.

On March 1, a 10-member delegation including the wives of diplomats of Canadian, American,

British, Australian, Austrian, French, Czechic and the UN embassies and institutions in China came to the library and visited the stack of the Complete Library of the Four Branches of

Literature and collected treasures of Yinshang oracle bones, Farming and Weaving Pictures in

Ancient China. They further deepened the understanding to Chinese brilliant historical culture with a long history, laying a sound foundation for the future international exchanges of our library.

From March 3 to 14, the third Session of the 10th National People’s Congress and the third Session of the 10th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference were held in Beijing successively.

In order to ensure the services for the two sessions, we provided high-quality and high-efficiency information document reference services to the representatives of the two sessions to participate in and discuss government and political affairs. On March 4, 5, 8 and 9, our service personnel had provided on-site services in the Great Hall of the People for four times. We distributed over 1,800 copies of The Letter of the National Library of China to Deputies of National People’s Congress,

500 copies of picture albums of the National Library of China, 2,000 copies of Information Search

Material List of the Third Session of the 10th National People’s Congress and over 1,000 copies of session information search tables, and provided strong support to the proposal and recommendation work of the deputies of the two session. Up to March 14, we provided 4 person-times of reference services in the library, 16 case-times of telephone reference services and

28 case-times of written reference services to the deputies of the two sessions. We also issued 13 reader cards to the deputies of the two sessions.

On March 4, deputy director Zhang Yafang met with librarian Ellen Hammond and associate librarian CAI Su’e of the East Asian Library of the Yale University and gave a brief introduction of our library to them. Later, director of Rare Books & Special Collections Department Zhang

Zhiqing, deputy director of Acquisitions & Cataloguing Department Zhang Yanxia and leader of the International Exchange Section of Acquisitions & Cataloguing Department Ma Jing had a conversation with the visitors about the International Dunhuang Project and related issues of international exchange, and the both parties also had a discussion on foreign rare book recovery of our library.

On March 5, the series lectures of International Knowledge and Chinese Diplomacy were held jointly by the branch library and the China National Association for International Studies. The first lecture of International Trend and Thinking was delivered by Dean of China Foreign Affairs

University and the former Chinese Ambassador in France Wu Jianmin. Deputy director Zhang

Yanbo and Chen Li attended the lecture, and over 150 people attended the lecture.

On March 16, the leading Party group of the Ministry of Culture held an appointment meeting of director of the National Library of China in the Multi-functional Hall. Minister Sun Jiazheng and vice minister Zhou Heping from the Ministry of Culture, director Lv Zhangshen and director of

Leader Division Sun Xuguang from the Department of Personnel of the Ministry of Culture, our library’s honorary director Ren Jiyu, director and secretary of the NLC Party Committee Zhan

Furui, deputy director Zhang Yanbo, deputy secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang and deputy director Chen Li attendedthe meeting. The middle-level leaders, secretary of the Party Branch, the leaders of sections, staff of professional primary, professional agent primary and professional secondary posts and managing directors of the library-invested enterprises participated in the meeting. In the meeting, LV Zhangshen announced Circular of

Ministry of Culture on Removal of Ren Jiyu, Circular of Ministry of Culture on Honorary Director

Appointment of Ren Jiyu and Circular of Leading Party Group of Ministry of Culture on

Appointment of Comrade Zhan Furui.

That same day, we held the Meeting of Stage Transmission Mobilization for Progressiveness Education of Party Members. Honorary director Ren Jiyu, director and secretary of the Party

Committee Zhan Furui, deputy director Zhang Yanbo, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, deputy director Chen Li, the members of the Party Committee

Guo Youling and Fu Ping, as well as the secretaries and members of the Party Committee Branch, middle-level leaders, party-member leaders of sections and groups and representatives of democratic parties participated in the meeting.

On March 17, the NLC Staff Conference, 2005 was held in the NLC Concert Hall. Honorary director Ren Jiyu, director and secretary of the Party Committee Zhan Furui, deputy director

Zhang Yanbo, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, deputy director Chen Li, as well as the members of the Library Party Committee Li Zhizhong, Guo

Youling and Fu Ping attended the meeting, and all staff of the library, excluding the staff on duty, participated in the meeting. In the meeting, The NLC Decision on Commending Good-quality

Service Posts and Good-quality Service Individuals in 2004 was announced; rewards of the

National Library of China from the outside of the library in 2004 were disclosed; representatives of good-quality service posts and good-quality service individuals were awarded. Later, the representatives won the Good-quality Service Posts and Good-quality Service Individuals introduced their working experiences, respectively. Finally, Zhan Furui delivered a work report, reviewed our library's working achievements of 2004 and posted concrete requirements of the work in 2005.

On March 19, our library held the 4th Wenjin Reading Salon of the National Library of China, the researchers of the Chinese Academy of Governance Zhang Zhihe delivered Oriental Heart

Painting—Chinese Ancient Calligraphic Art, the researcher of the China Academy of Space

Technology Yang Cunheng hosted the event, and nearly 200 people attended the event.

From March 22 to March 25, the Third China-U. S. Library Cooperation Conference, which was jointly sponsored by the National Library of China, Library Society of China, Library of Congress and the Association of Research Libraries and organized by Shanghai Library, was held in

Shanghai. The theme of the meeting was Knowledge Management and Service, nearly 20 well-known library experts and scholars of China and America delivered reports and speeches.

Vice minister of the Ministry of Culture Zhou Heping and deputy mayor of Shanghai Yang

Xiaodu participated and delivered the speeches in the opening ceremony of the conference; our director and standing vice president of the Library Society of China Zhan Furui hosted the opening ceremony; nearly one hundred of representatives from China and America attended the meeting; and our deputy director Zhang Yafang and directors of relevant departments and divisions also participated in the meetings

On March 23, the ceremony of hiring the senior librarian of the America’s Library of Cogress and well-known scholar Wang Yi as Consultant of the National Library of China was held in the Red

Hall. Honorary director Ren Jiyu, director and secretary of the Party Committee Zhan Furui, deputy directors Zhang Yanbo and Chen Li, the former director of the Department of Public

Relations of the Ministry of Culture and relevant directors of the NLC departments and divisions attended the ceremony.

On March 29, Library Reader Service Work Experience Exchange Meeting was held in the

Multi-functional Hall, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, leaders with positions above sections in operation departments and divisions, who were in charge of the reader service work, representatives of frontier-line staff and functional departments, totaling over 180 persons, attended the meeting. In the meeting, the representatives who won the

Good-quality Service Posts and Good-quality Service Individuals, 2004 made speeches successively, and they introduced self-experiences and made plans for improving the reader service work.

On March 30, the opening ceremony of Hungary Stamp and Landscape Photography Exhibition was held in the Wenjin Hall. Vice minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Qiao Zonghui, deputy director of the Bureau of External Cultural Relations of the Ministry of Culture Pu Tong, director Zhan Furui, Chairman of the Supervision Conference of State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality as well as the member of the CPPCC Beijing Committee Li Jiali, under-secretariat of State of Hungarian Ministry of National Cultural Heritage Schneider Martha, director of the International Bureau of the Hungarian Ministry of National Cultural Heritage Hajdu Nora, manager of Hungary’s

Hungarofest Banz Otto as well as Counsellor and deputy head of Mission of Hungarian Embassy in China Odze Gyorgy attendedthe opening ceremony. 49 sets of Hungarian samples and over 50 pieces of Hungarian Landscape Photography works were displayed in the exhibition. The exhibition lasted until April 3.

On April 16, our library held the 5th Wenjin Reading Salon of the National Library of China.

Researcher of the Institute of World Religions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Du

Jiwen delivered a lecture of Chinese Buddhism and Chinese Culture, and professor Ulji of the

Mongolian Department of Minzu University of China (MUC) hosted the event.

On April 18, All Rivers Flow to Sea and Benefit All Ages—Rare Books & Special Collections

Work Report Exhibition of the National Library of China was held in the Wenjin Hall. The exhibition displayed the development and achievements of the rare books & special collections.

Vice chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Xu Kuangdi, vice minister of the Ministry of Culture Zhou Heping and honorary director Ren Jiyu attended the opening ceremony.

On April 21, the opening ceremony of the series lectures of Europe, Asia and Africa Archeology and Civilization, organized jointly by the National Library of China, the French School of Asian

Studies (EFEO) and Ancient Civilization Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social

Sciences, was held in the branch library. Dean of EFEO Franciscus VERELLEN, culture specialist of Division of Culture of French Ambassy Fabyene MANSENCAL, deputy director Zhang Yafang and researcher of the Ancient Civilization Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social

Sciences Li Xueqin attended the opening ceremony. The series lectures, through 7 professional reports, concretely introduced the main research results in the archeology field by various overseas colleges of France and added wonderful on-site comments by the experts, displaying European and Asian brilliant ancient civilization and cultural fascination from various aspects. Over 600 people had attended the lectures in total.

On April 23, the public reading promotion activity “World Book and Copyright Day”, jointly organized by the National Library of China and Library Society of China and other cooperators, such as the program Multiple Focus Report of Hunan TV, Writer Right Guarantee Committee of

Chinese Writers’ Association, The Publishers Association of China and Copyright Society of

China, was held at the Wenjin Square. The theme of the activity was Reading Makes You to Live a

Colourful Life and Jointly Build Harmonious Society, the slogan was Knowledge is Beautiful because of Transmission. Technology and Environment Program Official of United Nations

Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) D.r.jayakuma, secretary of Secretary

Division of Chinese Writers’ Association and deputy director of Writer Right Guarantee

Committee of Chinese Writers’ Association Jidi Majia, Chairman of the Publishers Association of

China Yu Youxian, director of Copyright Society of China Shen Rengan, our director and standing vice president of the Library Society of China Zhan Furui as well as deputy director of

Hunan TV attended the event and made speeches. The event was rich and wonderful, including firstly granting awards to the 10 social institutions, groups or individuals that had made contributions to the development of librarianship including Shao Yifu, Shi Jingyi, Liu Deyuan,

Chinese Literature Foundation, etc, , so as to arouse more social powers to make contributions to the development of China's librarianship; The organizations, such as Beijing Timely Book Co.,

Ltd etc., presented books to parts of western libraries; well-known writers read classical and beautiful articles; the Spring Flow Book shelf was opened. The event also made the World Book and Copyright Day as the belt and bridge of connecting the publishing house, the library and the reader, transforming the public activity with the only purpose of arousing the public to read into an actual holiday serving the readers.

That same day, the opening ceremony of the 6th conference of the International Dunhuang Project jointly organized by the National Library of China and the British Library was held in a grand way.

Honorary director Ren Jiyu, Representative of Division of Culture of the British Ambassy in

China and Secretary-general of the International Dunhuang Project Wen Hong and deputy director of China Dunhuang Turpan Society Hao Chunwen made speeches successively; director of the

Manuscript Research Institute of Dunhuang Academy Ma Deyi read the congratulatory letter to the conference from Director of Dunhuang Academy Fan Jinshi; over 60 recovery experts and scholars from libraries, museums and institutes of Britain, France, Japan, Russia, Denmark and

Gemany attended the conference; The conference received 35 theses and 30 of them were communicated in the conference.

In April, our library received a formal letter signed and sent by the new secretary-general of

International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Peter Johan Lor, appointing deputy director of the NLC branch library Wang Shan as the member of the Standing

Committee of the Asia and Oceania Section of IFLA , director of the Stack Management and

Reading Services Department Li Xiaoming as the member of the Standing Committee of the

Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loan Section of IFLA, and deputy director of the Rare Books

& Special Collections Department Su Pinhong as the member of the Standing Committee of the

Preservation and Conservation Section of IFLA. The appointments would become effective when the Oslo Conference of IFLA was held this year. Their terms of office were from 2005 to 2009.

On May 1, in order to meet the rising reading demand of the public, richen their holiday life and fully play the role of social education and cultural transmission of the National Library of China, our library opened regularly during the May Day Holiday and received 88,079 person-times in six opening days, an increase of nearly 12,000 person-times compared with the same period of last year; we also received 55 young visitors.

From May 13 to May 19, director Zhan Furui and deputy director Zhang Yafang met with the delegation led by Librarian of the National Library of Poland Mr.Michal Jagiello. They had a friendly conversation.

On May 14, 2005 Handicapped Day—Tian Xiaoming Paper-cut Works Exhibition, jointly organized by the NLC branch library and the Foreign Language Periodicals Publishing House of

All-China Wom en's Federation , was held in the Lecture Hall of the branch library. Hundreds of art works full of ethnic and custom information of the members of China Paper-cut Institute and

Paper-cut Artist Tian Xiaoming were displayed, and about 300 person-times visited the exhibition.

On May 15, the library Party Committee held Public Satisfaction Degree Assessment Conference of Progressiveness Education of the Party Member of the National Library of China. Director and secretary of the Party Committee Zhan Furui, on behalf of the library Party Committee, made a report concerning five aspects of vigorously boosting the development of the librarianship, continuing to follow the mass line, intensifying the scientific and democratic decision making and further deepening the reforms. Over 200 people attended the conference, including the library leadership, middle-level leaders, members of the national committee of CPPCC, the Party-member representatives, people from labor unions, youth leagues and women’s associations, representatives of democratic parties and reader representatives. Group Leader Cao Haitao, deputy group leader Zhang Bo and all members of the third supervision group of the Ministry of Culture attended the conference. After the assessment conference, Cao Haitao hosted a seminar involving members of the national committee of CCPPCC, the Party-member representatives, people from labor unions, youth leagues and women’s associations, representatives of democratic parties and reader representatives.

From May 15 to May 17, Online Library Cataloguing Center Work Meeting 2005 was held in

Beijing and nearly 70 representatives from 54 branch centers and library members across China attended the meeting. Deputy director Zhang Yanbo made an opening speech. Recently, 850 users in 2004 of the national center data of the Online Library Cataloguing Center were developed to

944, and 452 library members in 2004 were developed to 536.

On May 28, our library held the 6th Wenjin Reading Salon of the National Library of China. The senior professor of Shanxi University Ouyang Jiang, who was at the age of 80, made a lecture of

Thought is Energy, and director of the Institute of Thought Science of China Academy of

Management Science hosted the event.

On May 29, Service Promotion Week of the National Library of China 2005 was opened formally.

In addition to the regular services, such as various knowledge lectures, exhibitions, reference desks, on-site reference services for readers, we also stressed the technical content of the services, opened national digital resource portal (under trial operation), formally established the NLC

Science & Technology Documents Novelty Search Center, opened the second-phase construction staff’s periodical reading room. Meanwhile, we paid attention to the services for the minor, holding excellent serial picture exhibitions, juvenile excellent painting exhibitions and several lectures, and receiving visiting group of the minor.

That same day, the opening ceremony of the national digital resource portal (under trial operation) was held in the Zizhu Hall. Deputy director Chen Li made a speech and started the national digital resource portal. The digital resource portal was a newly launched public service platform of collected resources of our library and an important means of providing remote services by using the digital library technologies.

That same day, the opening ceremony of the NLC Science & Technology Documents Novelty

Search Center was held in the Red Hall. The establishment of the center indicated that our library took anther step in the process of performing the responsibility of providing document information services to the central and national leading authorities, key scientific research, educational and production institutions, embodying the important role that the National Library of China should play on technical innovation services for the national technology decision making and key scientific research and production institutions. Director of Reward Office of the Ministry of

Science and Technology Jia Feng and deputy secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang made speeches successively. And they also unveiled the plaque to open the center.

That same day, the Reading Room for the Second-phase Project Construction Workers of the

National Library of China was held at the construction site of the second-phase project. Deputy director Zhang Yanbo attended the ceremony and made a speech. The reading room collected over 2,000 Chinese periodical copies involving the law, life, literature, art, sports, history, geography, science popularization, architecture, agriculture, medical care, etc.

That same day, Visit and Seek in Book Sea, Enjoy Refined and Popular Works—the NLC

Collected Serial Pictures Exhibition was held. In the exhibition, representative works selected from the nearly 40,000 collected serial picture works of our library, such as the Life of Wu Xun or

Wu Xun Zhuan in Chinese, People's Martyr Bai Tongben or Ren Min De Lie Shi Bai Tong Ben in

Chinese, Zhu Ba Jie, Ground Treasure Map or Di Bao Tu in Chinese, the Letter with Feathers or

Ji Mao Xin in Chinese, Reconnaissance Across the Yangtze or Du Jiang Zhen Ca Ji in Chinese,

Hainan Island Liberation or Jie Fang Hai Nan Dao in Chinese, Red Rock or Hong Yan in Chinese,

Montainous Township Great Change or Shan Xiang Ju Bian in Chinese, Railway Guerrilla or Tie

Dao You Ji Dui in Chinese, and the like, displaying the brilliant achievements of the comic strips art.

That same day, our library held the 7th NLC Wenjin Reading Salon. The well-known writer Mr.

Shu Yi made a speech of My Literary Creation and Aesthetics Creation and the director of Chinese

Dancers Association Yao Zhuzhu hosted the event.

On May 31, Library Service Promotion Week Reader Seminar 2005was held in No. 313 meeting room.Deputy director Zhang Yangbo, relevant leaders of divisions and departments as well as 15 readers doing various jobs attended the meeting. The readers acknowledged that recently, our library had strengthened the reforms and heightened the service quality; meanwhile, they also proposed opinions and suggestions of the problems in the reader service work of our library which enlightened us.

June

On June 1, over 120 junior middle students from the Experimental School Attached to Haidian

Teachers Training College attended the lecture Story of Book delivered by director and the research librarian of the NLC Library Development Institute Li Zhizhong in the No. 4 video room. Deputy director Chen Li presided over the lecture. Later, the students visited the All Rivers Flow to Sea and Benefit All Ages—Rare Books & Special Collections Work Report Exhibition of NLC, and staff of the Rare Books & Special Collections Department explained the exhibition to them.

That same day, Free Space—Juvenile Painting Works Exhibition was held at the NLC branch library. Nearly 50 children's paintings were displayed, showing the rich imagination and writing potential, receiving attention from the youngsters and their parents. The exhibition lasted until

June 5.

That same day, Capital Social Security Integrative Governance Committee decided to grant the title of Capital Safe Institution to our library.

On June 4, our library held the 8th NLC Wenjin Reading Salon. Professor of Beijing Normal

University Li Rongquan made a lecture of Earth and Time, and associate professor of Beijing

Normal University Zhou Weili hosted the event. Nearly 150 people participated in the event.

On June 14, the Ministry of Culture held the singing contest “I Brighten Party Flag” . There were

20 representative teams from various bureaus, departments and directly-affiliated institutions attended the contest, and our library’s chorus won the first prize of the contest.

On June 21, our library held the Reward Conference of Progressiveness Education of Party

Members of NLC in the NLC Concert Hall. All Communist Party members, party candidates, representatives of democratic parties and high level intellectuals outside the Party attended the conference. The members of the third supervision group of the Ministry of Culture attended the meeting. The meeting was hosted by deputy secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang. Deputy director Zhang Yanbo announced the Decision of Praising

Excellent Party Branches, members and workers, granted the titles of Excellent Party Branch to two grass-root Party branches, the Party branch of the Security Division and the Party branch of the Rare Books & Special Collections Department, granted the titles of Excellent Communist

Party Member to 17 comrades, such as Zhang Yan, and granted the titles of Excellent Party Worker to three comrades, such as Zhang Yafang; director and secretary of the NLC Party

Committee Zhan Furui made a conclusion report on behalf of the Library Party Committee.

Leader of the Third Supervision Group of the Ministry of Culture Cao Haitao fully acknowledged and highly praised the implementation of progressiveness education of the Party members.

That same day, the Chinese Library Classification editorial committee held a small-sized report meeting at our library. Dr. Zeng Lei from America’s Kent State University was invited to make a report of New Research Development of Overseas Controlled Language, and 15 people from

Beijing Office of CLC Editorial Board and our relevant departments attended the report meeting.

That same day, director Zhan Furui met with director of Los Angeles School Library of California

University Shi Gerui, and they had a friendly conversation. They also discussed the main topics of the 4th Sino-American Library Cooperative Meeting, which would be held in America in 2007.

On June 22, the Book Review Meeting of Expert Acquisitions Group of Present Book to

Countryside Project 2005 was held in Green Hall of our library. Deputy director of the Department of Community Culture of the Minstry of Culture Liu Xiaoqin, director of the Library Division of the Department of Community Culture of the Minstry of Culture Zhang Xiaoping, director of the

Theoretical Research Office of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Xia Chao, researcher of the Literature Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Bai Hua, director of

Communist Party History Department of Renmin University Yang Fengcheng, director and secretary of the NLC Party Committee Zhan Furui and deputy secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang attended the review meeting, demonstrating and reviewing the recommended book list and samples of Present Book to Countryside Project 2005. The year of

2005 was the third year of implementing the project. It was predicted that books presented in three year could break through 5,000,000 copies, an increase of over 1,100,000 copies than that of the plan.

On June 24, the Mysterious Colombia Landscape Photography Exhibition jointly organized by the

National Library of China and Colombian Ambassy in China. The wife of the Colombian ambassador in China Malta Manuel Uribe, the well-known photographer, educationist and the founder of Colombian Ecotourism Andrés Hurtado García made speeches in the opening ceremony, respectively. There were 37 pieces of excellent works displayed. Andrés Hurtado

García also presented our library the book Mysterious Colombia, which was a wonderful album made by him for years.

Team, the Acquisitions & Cataloguing Department Representative Team and the Branch Library

Representative Team won the Chorus No. 3 prize; the Beijing Library Publishing House

Representative Team won the Semichorus No.1 prize, the Stack Management and Readingn

Services Department Representative Team won the Semichorus No. 2 prize; other teams won the

Excellent prizes. Besides, Wang Yongmei from the Logistical Service Center, Wu Ling from Stack

Management and Reading Services Department and Wang Yuanrong from the Acquisitions &

Cataloguing Department won the Excellent Conductor prize; three departments, the Rare Books &

Special Collections Department, China National Microfilming Center for Library Resources and

Logistical Service Center won the Organization prizes.

July

On July 6, director Zhan Furui met with the cultural delegation of the Australian government headed by director of Department of the Arts and Sport of Australia Rhodes Kempe, and they had a friendly conversation.

That same day, deputy director Zhang Yanbo headed a group to specially send a group of heatstroke prevention products to the construction site of the second-phase, and expressed greetings to the constructors. The leaders and constructors from China Railway Construction

Engineering Group were deeply moved and expressed that they strived to construct a good-quality building.

On July 15, the starting ceremony of Volunteer Action Library Project “Go to Public

Institutions”—2005 Summer Holiday Activity was held at our library, and the first group of 40 volunteers attended the ceremony and formally swore to start working after an training. Director of the Communist Youth League Beijing Committee Volunteer Service Center made a mobilization speech and signed agreements with the volunteers. Deputy director Chen Li expressed that he welcomed the volunteers to attend the work of the National Library of China.

On July 21, 2005 China National Library Application Technology and Professional Equipment and

Library Resource Expo was started in Guilin. The Document Delivery Center of the Stack

Management and Reading Services Department showed in the exhibition again and won the title of The Most Popular Exhibitor.

On July 23, our library held the 9th NLC Wenjin Reading Salon. Researcher of the Institute of

Chinese History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Yang Baoyu hosted the event and nearly 110 people attended it.

From July 25 to 28, the Library held 2005 Midyear Middle-level Leader and Secretary of the Party

Branch Working Meeting at Changli Training Base. Director and Secretary of the NLC Party

Committee Zhan Furui, deputy director Zhang Yanbo, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, deputy director Chen Li, assistant of the NLC director and director of Planning & Finance Division Zhang Yuhui, middle-level leaders and secretaries of the

Party Branches attended the meeting. The meeting concluded the work of the first half of 2005 and deployed the work of the second half of 2005, especially discussed the mechanism innovation and service innovation issues. This month, scientific research program application of the Library,

2005 was finished smoothly. 13 departments filed applications of 38 scientific research programs, which was the most over the past years. The scientific research programs focused on aspects of basic operations work and library practical application research. 11 programs passed the review of the academic committee and the approval of the Director Working Meeting.

From August 3 to 4, the Seminar on Digital Library Construction and Development & Annual

Meeting of China Digital Library Branches 2005, organized by the Library Society of China, the

National Library of China and the China Digital Library Co., Ltd, was held in Hohhot, Inner

Mongolia. Dozens of well-known experts from the National Library of China, the Research

Institute of Information Technology of Tsinghua University, and the like, made speeches on magnanimity digital resource management system development, digital library customization service, virtual reference services, etc. Nearly 300 people, inculduing managing directors from relevant institutions and representatives from the branches of China Digital Library, , attended the meeting.

On August 9, deputy secretary of the Leading Party Group and vice minister of the Ministry of

Culture Meng Xiaosi, member of the Leading Party Group of the Ministry of Culture and leader of the Discipline Inspection Group of Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC in the Ministry of Culture Chang Keren conducted an investigation at our library along with director of the Department of Personnel of the Ministry of Culture Lv Zhangshen. The investigation group had a seminar with parts of middle-level leaders, Sectaries of the NLC Party Brancesh and staff of key professional posts concerning the implementation of the library’s rectifying and improving solution of the progressiveness education of the Party members, leadership construction and Party construction.

From August 12 to August 20, a 10-member delegation headed by our deputy director Chen Li went to Oslo, the Capital of Norway, and attended the 71st IFLA General Conference and

Council—World Library and Information Conference. The theme of the conference was

“Libraries—A voyage of discovery” Chen Li, on behalf of the National Library of China, attended the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL) and the National Libraries Section Standing Committee. He also attended Preservation and Conservation Center Director

Meeting on behalf of the China Center of the Preservation and Conservation Center of IFLA. As a member of the Professional Group Standing Committee and Core Project Standing Committee, director of the NLC International Cooperation Division Yan Xiangdong, director of the NLC

Reference Department Lu Haiyan, director of the NLC Acquisitions & Cataloguing Department

Gu Ben, deputy director of the NLC Branch Library Wang Shan and director of the NLC Rare

Books & Special Collections Department Su Pinhong attended relevant professional sections departments’ meetings, respectively.

On August 15, the NLC Collected Anti-Japanese War Documents Exhibition of with the theme of War Fire Lasted Eight Year and War Song Sounded for Thousands of Years was held in

Wenjin Hall. The exhibition, through over 300 pieces of pictures and over 30 selected collected books and newspapers published in the Anti-Japanese War period, displaying the process of the

8-year fighting of the Chinese people.

On August 15, Summer Holiday Volunteer Activity Seminar of the National Library of China was held in the Audio-Visual Room 1. Director of the Coordination & Operation Division Wang

Dongbo, director of China Communist Youth League Beijing Committee Volunteer Service

Steering Center and secretary-general of Beijing Volunteers Association Wang Jintao attended the meeting and had an exchange with the directors of relevant sections of the operation departments as well as over 50 volunteers.

That same day, the NLC Branch Library showed the special documentary, China in

Disaster—Story of 14th Troop of United States Air Force in China, which was produced and directed by the well-known America’s war reporter Harold Geer during the Anti-Japanese War period. The movie truly recorded the historical pictures that the Chinese and American People fought for the peace side by side. After the show, the 80-year-old Harold Geer answered the questions of the audience on site. About 260 people watched the movie.

September

On September 1, the member of the leading group of Present Book to Countryside Project of the

Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance, deputy secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, director of the State-owned Assets Management Division Fang

Zijin, and the like, checked and directed the work of Present Book to Countryside Project in the

Book Delivery Center on site.

That same day, director Zhan Furui met with Mr. Greg Browne, the International Affairs President of Thomson Learning, and his three colleagues. The two parties had a negotiation concerning

Eighteen Century Collections Online (ECCO), digitalization of rare collections, etc.

That same day, director Zhan Furui met with Ms. Amy Ching-Fen Tsiang, Librarian of East Asian

Library of University of California, Los Angeles, America. The two parties had an exchange concerning book exchange between the two libraries, book presentation and the use of digitalized collection resource of our library.

On September 7, the second-phase engineering construction changed from the stage of underground car garage construction to the key stage of main building steel structure. Honorary director Ren Jiyu, director and secretary of the NLC Party Committee Zhan Furui and assistant of director of the Library and director of Planning & Finance Division Zhang Yuhui organized a cooperation meeting of the Second-phase Engineering Construction. Managing directors of the construction institution, steel structure processing factory and monitoring institution unit as well as representative of the design institution at the construction site attended the meeting.

On September 9, our library held the NLC Scientific Research Working Meeting & 8th NLC

Scientific Seminar and synchronously launched the Scientific Research Achievements Exhibition in the 10th Five-year Plan Period of the NLC. Honorary director Ren Jiyu, director and secretary of the Party Committee Zhan Furui, deputy director Zhang Yanbo, deputy secretary of the Party

Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, deputy director Chen Li, director of the Technology

Divison of the Department of Science and Technology for Culture of the Ministry of Culture Yan Xianji, the Library director assistant and director of Planning & Finance Division Zhang Yuhui and parts of staff attended the meeting. The meeting reviewed the achievements of our library’s scientific research work during the 10th five-year plan period, and concretely explained the newly-formulated and-modified scientific management measures of our library. The meeting also granted certificates of merit and bonuses to the departments or divisions and individuals who won the thesis rewards in the 8th Scientific Seminar. Finally, the awarded representatives read their thesis and made exchanges.

On September 13, the Opening Ceremony of Information Management Major 2005 for Senior

Middle School Graduates who Enter Undergraduate Course and Junior College or Vocational

School graduates who Enter Undergraduate Course, organized jointly by the training center of our library and the Online Education College of Beijing Normal University, was held in the NLC

Multi-functional Hall. Deputy director Zhang Yanbo, associate dean of Online Education College of Beijing Normal University Xia Chunting and all students, totaling over 100 persons, attended the opening ceremony.

From September 14 to September 16, the 19th National Joint Conference of Directors of

Libraries in Provinces, Autonomous Regions, Municipalities Directly under the Central

Government and Lager Cities, organized by the National Library of China and Anhui Provincial

Library, was held in Anhui Province. About 60 library directors and representatives of Provinces,

Autonomous Regions, Municipalities Directly under the Central Government and lager cities across China attended the meeting. And the theme of meeting was Theory and Practice of Library

Reform.

On September 17, the State Science Popularization Day branch meeting activity was held at our library. The event, in light of the theme of Establishing a Scientific Outlook on Development,

Jointly Constructing a Harmonious Society, in the ways of scientific popularization exhibitions, promotion materials distribution, on-site expert reference services and scientific popularization special lectures, promoted sciences to the public. 160 staff from 17 societies, associations and institutes answered the questions of the mass on site and the presentation ceremony of books, periodicals and AV works on Understanding Scientific Outlook on Development was held.

From September 21 to September 25, Annual Conference of China Document Image Technology

Standardized Technical Committee (CDITSTC) and China Microforms Association (CMA) 2005 were held in Mianzhu City, Sichuan Province. Member of CDITSTC and our deputy director

Jianwen, deputy president of CMA Zhang Mengsong, deputy president of CMA Liu Yuankui, deputy director of the Archive Bureau (Library) of Sichuan Province Zhang Xin and over 50 representatives from over 30 organizations across China attended the opening ceremony. The meeting concluded main work since the change of the term of office, achievements of national standard system modifications and implementation in 2005.

From September 22 to September 23, National Library of China Enterprise Information Services

Annual Conference, 2005 with the theme of National Library of China—The Largest Information

Source for Chinese Enterprises was held in our library. The annual conference aimed at building a platform for libraries, enterprises and source suppliers, making more domestic and overseas enterprises know and use the resources and services of the National Library of China, improving their abilities of discovering, gaining and using the information, increasing enterprises’ economic profits and core competitive strength continuously.

On September 23, Taiwan well-known writer and scholar Li Ao visited our library. Director Zhan

Furui and deputy director Chen Li received him. He enjoyed over 40 copies or pieces of collected treasures and visited underground stack of conserving collected treasures, such as the Dunhuang

Manuscripts and the Yongle Encyclopedia as well as the Complete Library of the Four Branches of

Literature. He praised and wrote an inscription of not willing to be a Writer but a Librarian.

On September 24, we held the 11th NLCWenjin Reading Salon. Researcher of the Institute of

World Religions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Li Fuhua made a speech of Chinese

Language Buddhism Tripitaka Research, associate researcher of the Institute of World Religions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Ms. He Mei hosted the event and nearly one hundred people attended the event.

On September 26, 2005 the Opening Ceremony of Training Class for Postgraduate Course jointly organized by our library and the Information Management Department of Peking University was held in the place of Information Management Department of Peking University. Deputy director

From October 1 to 6, except October 7 of examination reparation in power cut, during the

National Day holidays, we received 64,211 person-times of readers in total. We also held lectures, free video shows and received younger visitors.

On October 5, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture Zhou Heping, accompanied by deputy director Chen Li and library director assistant and director of Planning & Finance Division Zhang

Yuhui, investigated the construction site of the second–phase project of the Library and national digital library project. Zhou Heping visited and greeted leaders and staff of China Railway

Construction Engineering Group fighting in the frontier during the holiday, carefully viewed the construction in process, listened work reports of our library, Project Department of China Railway

Construction Engineering Group and monitoring institutions, and made an important instruction of the second-phase engineering construction.

From October 12 to 13, Chinese Name Authority Training Meeting was held in our library. Our deputy director and Chairman on Duty of Coordination Committee for Chinese Name Authority, 2004-2005 Chen Li, deputy director of China Academy Library & Information System (CALIS)

Xie Qinfang, director of the Coordination & Operation Division Wang Dongbo, director of the

Acquisitions & Cataloguing Department Gu Ben, director of Cataloguing Department of the

Library of Chinese University of Hong Kong He Yiye, and the like, attended the meeting. The meeting aimed at improving the exchange of Chinese name authority work and cooperation of relevant institutions in this field, providing a study and discussing opportunity for the worker of

Chinese name authority.

On October 15, Bilateral Academic Seminar on “China and Europe: History of Printing and Book

(8th/15th Century—20th Century)” was held. The seminar was proposed by The French School of

Asian Studies (EFEO) and jointly held by École Pratique des Hautes Études (France), the Institute for the History of Natural Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Library of

China, with specially invited French National Higher Information Science and Library Science

Institute, Contemporary Social Culture History Research Center of Versailles

Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines University and the Chinese Civilization Research Group of the French

National Center for Scientific Research. The seminar aimed at discussing the development of the printing, book and reading in China and Europe. At the opening ceremony presented the NLC honorary director Ren Jiyu, director and secretary of the Party Committee Zhan Furui, deputy director Zhang Yafang and Chen Li, Specialist of Division of Culture of French Ambassy Man

Biyan, the International Cooperation Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Qiu Juliang and

Professor of École Pratique des Hautes Études (France) Barbier, professor of Versailles

Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines University Maurier, the former Dean and Professor of the French

School of Asian Studies Dai Ren, as well as the senior scholars who enjoyed reputation in the field of printed version research, suah as Fu Xinian, Li Zhizhong, Pan Jiexing and Yang Chengkai.

On October 16, the opening ceremony of Photography Exhibition of World Heritage in the Upper

Middle Rhine Valley, jointly organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with

Foreign Countries, the National Library of China, Library Society of China, Germany Rhineland and Hessen, as well as Goethe-Institute Beijing, was held in our library. The exhibition vividly displayed the beautiful sights and unique charm of the upper middle of the Rhine River. The exhibition lasted until November 6.

On October 20, Eternal Ba Jin—Ba Jin’s Life and Works Exhibition was held in the Collected

Treasure Display Room of our library. The exhibition displayed 12 titles of Ba Jin’s manuscripts carefully collected by our library, 5 titles of other writers’ manuscripts collected by Ba Jin and over 70 titles of printed books; the entire life and works of the literary giant was introduced by means of self-narrating with display boards. The exhibition lasted until October 30, and the manuscript exhibition lasted until October 24.

On October 22, the 7th staff sports meeting of the National Library of China was held on the playground of Minzu University of China. Director and secretary of the Party Committee Zhan

Furui started the opening ceremony of the sports meeting. Deputy secretary of the Party

Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang made an opening speech. Player and judge representatives swore at the platform, respectively. Deputy director Chen Li, political Commissar of the Second Detachment of Beijing Corps of the Armed Police Chen Wenjie and Cultural

Education Section of Beijing Zizhuyuan Park Street Office Ma Xiuli attended the opening ceremony. Nearly 1,000 persons of branch labor unions of the library attended the sports meeting,

800 players attended the contests with 265 awards of 16 sports items from three categories, such as field events, track events and funny sports.

On October 25, Italian Literature in China Book Exhibition was held at our library. The exhibition displayed main collections on Italian literature translation and introduction of our library and was an examination of the Chinese version of the Italian literature.

From October 25 to November 1, our leaders hosted and held the library section leader seminar of main operation departments. In the meeting, section leaders discussed actively about the post setting and management, basic operations and income, talent training and construction, the current situations, problems and future goals of the operations work. They also proposed many good opinions and suggestions. Secretary of the Party Committee Zhan Furui fully acknowledged the significance of the section leaders and raised three requirements to section leaders. Deputy secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, deputy director Chen Li and the Library director assistant and director of Planning & Finance Division Zhang Yuhui attended the seminar and answered related questions.

On October 26, the Central Civilization Committee held National Spritual Civilization

Construction Praise Meeting. Our library, the Ministry of Science and Technology, General

Administration of Press and Publication of PRC, the Headquarters of China Iron & Steel Research

Institute Group, Geological Museum of China and China Road & Bridge Corporation won the title of National Spiritual Civilization Creation Excellent Institute.

From October 27 to 28, the NLC Security Work Meeting 2005 was held in Changping District.

The key members of the library integrative governance committee, security committee and traffic security leading groups as well as leaders of the voluntary firefighting groups of various departments and divisions attended the meeting. And director and secretary of the Party

Committee Zhan Furui, deputy director Zhang Yanbo, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang attended the meeting and made speeches.

On October 29, we held the 12th Wenjin Reading Salon of NLC. Professor of Zhejiang University

Gong Yingyan made a lecture of European Ancient Map and Zheng He’s Fleet. The event was hosted by deputy director of the Rare Books & Special Collections Department Su Pinhong and near 100 persons attended the event.

November

On November 1, in order to let more reader attend the assessment of Wenjin Book Awards of NLC, our library displayed the book names, writers and publishing houses of 376 assessed books recommended by publishing houses, experts and readers with the display board in Zizhu Hall, meanwhile, we placed voting boxes and message pads for the readers of the library to vote their favorite books and wrote down feelings and opinions. The voting period was from November 1 to

20.

From November 3 to 4, the First National Seminar on Book Acquisitions, organized by our library with the cooperation of CNPIEC Information Technology Co., Ltd. and China Book Business

Report, was held in Kunming, Yunnan Province. The participants, in light of the two themes of

Acquisitions Object Research and Acquisitions and Industry Exchange, had a wide discusses on the comparisons and researches on overseas book acquisitions system 2.0 and the Collection

Manager, the impact of the book publishing amount on the library acquisition, the theory and practice of university foreign books acquisition in the network times, the acquisition of Japanese, oriental-rare-language and China Taiwan books, etc.

On November 20, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture Zhou Heping, conducted investigations on Minguo books, periodicals and newspapers, the collection and conservation. Mr. Zhou Heping required us to completely check the Minguo documents, made clear of the amount, document values and conservation, proposed conservation and restoration solution, so as to achieve the financial support. Deputy director Zhang Yafang and directors of related departments accompanied Mr. Zhou for the investigation.

Form November 22 to 29, on the invitation of our library, a five-member delegation of the

National Diet Library of Japan paid a visit here and made the 25th operation exchange with our library. The operation exchange theme was the Acquisitions, Conservation and Utilization of

Digital Resources.

On November 26, we held the 13th Wenjin Reading Salon of the NLC, professor of Beijing

From November 28 to 30, the Second Labor Union Representative Assembly and the First Staff

Representative Conference of the NLC was held in a grand way. Director and secretary of the

On December 1, in order to spur the reading enthusiasm of the public and enjoy the joy of reading, fully playing the key role of the National Library of China of advocating, organizing and serving the book reading, we launched many cultural dinners during 2005 Public Reading Month period.

The activities included the launching of online renewal of Chinese books, the awarding of Wenjin

Book Awards and other related activities, the Exhibition on Printing Techniques of “Transform the

Old into the New, Reach Ultimate Delicacy and Variety”, the Exhibition of the Serial Lectures on

Chinese Classics & Culture and the Exhibition of Chinese Words—From Inscription on Oracle

Bones to Computer Bytes, 8 high-quality lectures, bringing high-taste enjoyments to readers, readers’ sodality and Wenjin Reader Award awarding ceremony; etc.

That same day, the Exhibition on Printing Techniques of “Transform the Old into the New, Reach

Ultimate Delicacy and Variety”, jointly organized by the National Library of China and the

Traditional Print Studio of China Central Academy of Fine Arts, was held in the Collected

Treasure Display Room, showing the development and techniques of Chinese block printing technology.

That same day, Running Water of the Source, Drew from Ancient Time and Moist Modern Time,

Inherit Civilization, Plant a Wish—the Exhibition of the Serial Lectures on Chinese Classics &

Culture was held in Zizhu Hall. The exhibition displayed the source, development and various repercussions evoked in the society of the serial lectures from various aspects.

That same day, the 7th Session of NLC Communist Youth League was held in a grand way. Honorary director Ren Jiyu director and secretary of the NLC Party Committee Zhan Furui, deputy secretary of the NLC Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, secretary of the

League Committee of the Ministry of Culture Jing Xiaoyong, deputy secretary of the League

Committee of the Ministry of Culture Zhuge Yannan, secretary of the Party branches and leaders of departments and divisions of our library attended the session. And 50 League members of the

League Committee of the Ministry of Culture attended the session. Comrade Ma Hongjian, on behalf of 6th NLC League Committee, made a work report Realistic and Creative, Compile New

Youth Movement for the Modernization and Development of the NLC; and 7th NLC League

Committee comprised of 9 members was voted and founded in the session.

On December 2, before the coming of the International Handicapped Day, all League members of the League branch of the Stack Management and Reading Services Department sent a gift—3,000 copies or pieces of education materials for reference, to visually-impaired children of Beijing

School for the Blind. These materials enriched children’s leisure life and knowledge, relieving the school’s capital pressure to some extent, thus being welcomed by the students and teachers.

On December 3, we held the 14th NLC Wenjin Reading Salon. Professor of the School of

Journalism & Communication of Peking University Xiao Dongfa made the lecture named the

Origin and Spread of Chinese Ancient Printing, deputy director of China Printing Museum Wei

Zhigang hosted the event and nearly 70 persons attended the event.

From December 8 to 9, deputy director Chen Li met with Associate Librarian Deng Wenyi

(transliteration) and a librarian Ruan Mingying (transliteration) from the National Library of

Vietnam. The two parties made an exchange on book preservation, restoration, etc.

On December 10, the NLC branch library held the lecture Chinese Word Recognition delivered by the well-known philosopher and honorary director Mr. Ren Jiyu. He copiously quoted authoritative works, from the aspects of history of culture and cultural phenomenon, explaining the impacts of Chinese words on Chinese culture, Chinese ethnics and Chinese Politics with a history of thousands of years. He hoped the lecture would attract the attention of the public to the Chinese words.

That same day, the Exhibition of Chinese Words—From Inscription on Oracle Bones to Computer

Bytes was held in the branch library. The exhibition displayed the processes of the sources, development and evolution of the Chinese words, the role of the Chinese words in the development of Chinese culture and technology as well as the impact thereof on the world civilization

On December 12, we received urgent note from the Party Committee of the Ministry of Culture, in which we were required to organize and conduct an urgent donation within one day. In the short single day, we donated 40 bed quilts, 417 cotton-padded clothes, 1,259 sweater and woolen pants,

290 unlined clothes, fully embodying the selflessness love of our staff.

On December 16, we held NLC Talent Work Meeting in the Multi-functional Hall. Honorary director Ren Jiyu, director and secretary of the Party Committee Zhan Furui, deputy director

Zhang Yanbo, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and deputy director Zhang Yafang, deputy director Chen Li and the Library director assistant and director of Planning & Finance Division

Zhang Yuhui attended the meeting. All middle-level managing leaders, sections leaders, the secretaries of the Party branches and the League branches as well as primary and secondary staff, totaling nearly 300 persons, attended the meeting. The meeting was hosted by Zhang Yafang. The meeting was a conclusion of the talent work in the past 9 years and the mobilization and planning of the next stage of the talent development work, defining the work and developing goals of the talent work in 5 years, having a deep impact on the our talent development work.

On December 22, the awarding ceremony of the first National Library of China Wenjin Book

Awards was held in Wenjin Hall. Experts, scholars, awarded writers, publishing houses and readers attended the ceremony, including Vice Chairman of the Chinese Writers Association Wang

Meng, honorary director Ren Jiyu, director and Secretary of the NLC Party Committee Zhan Furui, deputy director Zhang Yafang, Researcher of China Research Institute for Science Popularization

That same day, the National Library of China and Commercial Press jointly held the Symposium on Publishing the Gravure of the Complete Library of the Four Branches of Literature (Wenjinge

Edition) at the Great Hall of the People. Over 30 experts and scholars, such as Xu Jialu, Ren Jiyu,

Song Muwen, Yang Deyan, and the like, declared their opnions on publishing the Gravure of the

Complete Library of the Four Branches of Literature. Our library also selected one article from

Jing, Shi, Zi, Ji of the Complete Library of the Four Branches of Literature (Wenjinge Edition) respectively and shown them to the participants. The Gravure of the Complete Library of the Four

Branches of Literature (Wenjinge Edition) was made by the precise digital camera, which was the first among the large-scale publishing projects of China.

On December 23, the awarding ceremony of National Library of China Wenjin Reader Award,

2005 & Readers' Seminar was held at our library. Director and secretary of the Party Committee

Zhan Furui, deputy director Chen Li, 10 newly-selected Wenjin readers and 8 reader representatives attended the awarding ceremony and the readers’ seminar. Researcher of Beijing

Academy of Social Sciences and Standing member of the Standing Committee of Beijing

Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Wang Canzhi and

10 readers, such as the instructor of Foreign Language School of the University of Science and

Technology Beijing, were granted National Library of China Wenjin Reader Award, 2005.

On December 28, we held the NLC Second-phase Engineering Construction Development Report

Meeting in the Multi-functional Hall. Director and secretary of the Party Committee Zhan Furui, deputy director Chen Li and nearly 300 staff of our library attended the meeting. The Library director assistant and director of Planning & Finance Division Zhang Yuhui hosted the meeting.
