THE FRY ART GALLERY TOO When Bardfield Came to Walden Artists in Saffron Walden from the 1960s to the 1980s 2 December 2017 to 25 March 2018 Welcome to our new display space - The Fry Art Gallery Too - which opens for the first time while our main gallery at 19a Castle Street undergoes its annual winter closure for maintenance and work on the Collection. The north west Essex village of Great Bardfield and its surrounding area became the home for a wide range of artists from the early 1930s until the 1980s. More than 3000 examples of their work are brought together in the North West Essex Collection, selections of which are displayed in exhibitions at The Fry Art Gallery. Our first display in our new supplementary space focuses on those artists who lived at various times in and around Saffron Walden in the later twentieth century. Edward and Charlotte Bawden were the first artists to arrive in Great Bardfield around 1930, along with Eric and Tirzah Ravilious. After 30 years at Brick House, Charlotte arranged in 1970 that she and Edward would move to Park Lane, Saffron Walden for their later years. Sadly, Charlotte died before the move, but Edward was welcomed into an established community of successful professional artists in and around the town. These included artists Paul Beck and John Bolam, and the stage designers Olga Lehmann and David Myerscough- Jones. Sheila Robinson had already moved to the town from Great Bardfield in 1968, with her daughter Chloë Cheese, while the writer and artist Olive Cook had been established here with her photographer and artist husband Edwin Smith for many years. -

UTTLESFORD DISTRICT COUNCIL AUDLEY END AUDLEY END TL 525383 GRADE I A house of C17 origins beside a mid C19 parterre garden, with pleasure grounds by Richard Woods, surrounded by a C18 park conceived and partly laid out by Lancelot Brown between 1762 and 1767. HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT Audley End was built between c. 1605 and 1614, on the site of the abbey of Walden, for Thomas Howard, first earl of Suffolk. His surveyor was Bernard Jannssen and in 1614 Suffolk began to lay out extensive formal gardens. Following conviction for embezzlement however he suffered great financial trouble and his property declined. Suffolk died in 1626, leaving his son Theophilus to bear the twin burdens of his debts and enormous maintenance costs. When James the third earl inherited in 1640 the situation had not improved and after the Restoration the house and some parkland were sold to Charles II in 1668. Extensive works to the house were undertaken by Christopher Wren (1632-1723) but successive monarchs showed little interest in the property which in 1701 was returned to the Howards and settled on Henry, earl of Bindon who assumed the title of sixth earl of Suffolk in 1708. The sixth earl commissioned Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) to make improvements which resulted in demolition of part of the house, after which the property passed to Charles William Howard, seventh earl who died in 1722 at the age of twenty nine. The estate was left to his younger uncle, Charles Howard, while the title passed to his elder uncle, Edward. When Edward died, Charles became the ninth earl and in 1725 he commissioned a plan for a great formal garden by the French architect Dubois. -

Lot 72 Estimate: £300 - £500 + Fees *Barbara Jones (1912-1978) *Barbara Jones (1912-1978) a sketchbook, containing sixty-eight pages, twenty-six watercolour, pen and ink and pencil sketches, with pencil notes and a poem, some pages blank 25.5 x 20.5cm Barbara Jones (1912-1978) studied mural decoration at the Royal College of Art and was part of the circle of artists associated with Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden. Various shipping companies, including P&O, hotels and restaurants commissioned her designs, and she worked on many important exhibitions. James Gardner requested her involvement over several decades, with 'Design Fair' for the Council of Industrial Design in the late 1940s, the Festival of Britain in 1951, and the Commonwealth Institute, London in 1962. Graphic designer, writer and broadcaster, Jones championed the popular arts. Her exhibition 'Black Eyes and Lemonade' for the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1951, and her book, 'The Unsophisticated Arts', of the same year, remain landmarks in the appreciation of vernacular English culture. -

LORD HALIFAX TO OPEN EXHIBITION. On Thursday evening, May 22, Lord Halifax, Great Britain's Ambassador to the United States, will formally open at the Museum of Modern Art an exhibition of the Art of Britain At War, designed to show the wartime roles England assigns to her artists and de signers. It will be composed of oils, watercolors, drawings, prints, posters, cartoons, films, photographs, architecture and camouflage of the present war as well as work of British artists during the first World War. The exhibition will open to the public Friday morning, May 23, and will remain on view throughout the summer. It will then be sent by the Museum to other cities in the United States and Canada, The nucleus of the exhibition opening in May will be the group of paintings, watercolors and prints which the Museum expected to open as a much smaller exhibition in November 1940. After several postponments the Museum was finally forced to abandon it as, due to wartime shipping conditions, the pictures did not arrive although word had been received that the shipment had left London early in November. The Museum received the shipment late in January. After weeks of further negotiation with British officials in this country and by cable with London the Museum decided that it would be possible to augment the material already received with other work done by British artists since the first material was sent. -

Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious and John Aldridge were the first artists to settle in the Essex village of Great Bardfield in the early 1930s. Others soon followed, and their diverse output contributed strongly to British visual culture and artis- tic practice over many decades. The influence of this area continues to this day through the work of prominent contem- porary artists. The main Gallery, in Castle Street, Saffron Walden, is open from April to October. WHEN BARDFIELD CAME TO WALDEN Artists in Saffron Walden 1960s to 1980s In 1970 Charlotte Bawden arranged that she and Edward would move from Great Bardfield to Park Lane, Saffron Walden, where life would be more convenient. Sadly, she died before this was achieved, but Edward found a welcome in an established community of successful artists. Paul Beck, John Bolam, Olga Lehmann and David Myerscough-Jones all had established reputations, and Sheila Robinson had moved there from Great Bardfield in 1968. Olive Cook and Edwin Smith, well-known for their books on the English countryside, and the long-running Saturday Books, had long been established in the town. -

18 S. ALBANS AXP HERTS ARCHITECTURAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY. Excursion to Saffron Walden, August lst, 1895. On August 1st an excursion to Saffron Walden was conducted by the Rev. Canon Davys, in accordance with arrangements made with G. Alan Lowndes, Esq., President of the Essex Society. A party including the two Hon. Secretaries, Rev. C. W. Harvey, Mr. F. Trevor Davys, Mr. R. L. Howard, and others, leaving St. Albans, 9.25 a.m., travelled via Tottenham, and by Great Eastern Railway to Audley End Station, arriving 12.24 p.m. Thence they proceeded to Audley End House, where they were welcomed by the Mayor of Saffron Walden, Mr. Edward Tayler and Mr. G. A. Beaumont, F.S.A., conductors of the Essex party. Lord Braybrooke received the PROCEEDINGS. 19 visitors, and most courteously conducted them over the principal apart- ments, pointing out the family portraits and works of art. The history of the Mansion was observed to be summarised in an inscrip- tion on a tablet in the great saloon :—" Henry VIII., A.D. 1539, granted the Monastery of Walden, on the site of which this House stands, to Lord Chancellor Audley. Elizabeth, A.D. 1597, by special writ, summoned to Parliament Thomas Lord Howard de Walden, in the next reign, created Earl of Suffolk ; he built this House in 1616. After many reductions it descended to Sir John Griffin Griffin, K.B., confirmed Baron Howard de Walden in 1784. He, among other additions and alterations, refitted this Saloon, to commemorate the noble families, through whom, with gratitude, he holds these possessions." After visiting the Museum, Picture Galleries, Libraries, and Chapel, the gratification and thanks of the party were expressed to Lord Braybrooke by Mr.
