No. 17 St. Joseph's beats No. 10 Gonzaga in Marquee MSG MatchUp AllAmerica Nelson scores 20 as Hawk Hill takes over the Garden box score NEW YORK (AP) Jameer Nelson lived up to the billing. Jameer Nelson handled all the hype with 20 points for Saint Joseph's. The secondleading votegetter on the AP's preseason All America team had 20 points, eight rebounds, 10 assists and a ton of oohs and aahs in leading No. 17 Saint Joseph's to a 7366 victory over No. 10 Gonzaga in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Friday night. The senior guard struggled with his shot in the first half but more than made up for it in the second, seeming to come up with every big play the Hawks needed in the teams' season opener. "People roll their eyes when I selfpromote our kids, but he's the best in America because he leads and he believes the reason you play basketball is to make your team win," Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli said. Nelson's best sequence came when he drew a charge at midcourt, then took the inbounds pass and made a drive through traffic that left the crowd of 10,328 at Madison Square Garden standing and cheering. "It was great, probably the best game of this season so far," Nelson said, adding comedian to his other talents. More than 4,000 Saint Joseph's fans bought tickets and they turned the building in New York into Philadelphia's Hawk Hill for a night.

UAB BLAZERS BASKETBALL Head Coach Mike Davis Fifth Season At UAB | 11th Season As Head Coach | 21st Season Overall ike Davis is entering his fifth season at Mthe helm of the UAB men’s basketball program. Davis was hired as the program’s fourth head coach on April 7, 2006. Davis owns a record of 85-48 (.639) overall and 41-23 (.641) in Conference USA play during his four seasons in Birmingham. He is now 200- 127 (.612) during his 10-year coaching career. Over his last three seasons alone, Davis has led the Blazers to a record of 70-32 (.686) and three consecutive NIT berths. UAB has now appeared in either the NCAA tournament or NIT in seven of the past eight years. The 2009-10 season also marked the 24th postseason appearance in the 32-year history of UAB basketball (13 NCAA appearances). Davis etched his name in the record books as he became only the second coach in UAB lore to reach 70 wins in a three-year span. The only other coach in program history to accom- plish the feat was Hall of Famer Gene Bartow, who reached the pinnacle on two separate occasions (73 wins from 1983-86 and 71 wins from 1984-87). Davis has been even tougher on foes when playing at Bartow Arena. Over the last three seasons alone, he has guided the team to a 41-5 home record, including 24 straight non-conference regular season home wins (UAB has won 31 straight non-conference regular sea- son home games overall).
