Déjà vu is meant to be the essence and main topic of the film. By incorporating a defined relationship between Carlin and Kuchever, the film seems to transform into more of a romance, and the relationship between the two characters makes the topic of déjà vu seem nonessential. As an actor, Washington excellently captures the good-guy cop role and displays a stunning performance with his satirical remarks and quick wit. Even though the movie and Washington’s acting are enjoyable, Washington tends to grab the same types of role in each of his movies. In many of his movies, including “Training Day,” “Out of Time,” “Man on Fire,” and “Remember the Titans,” Washington drifts to portray the witty and intelligent character, who is generally a police officer. No doubt, Washington always displays magnificent talent and vigor in his mov- ies, but it would be enjoyable watching a movie in which he assumes more diverse roles. The main question is: how does any of this in- formation connect to teenagers? Aside from the fact that using birth control is extremely effective, this information also notifies teens about safe sex prac- tices. It is known that between 1995 and 2001, teen pregnancy has declined 86% and that statistic is not due to the practice of abstinence, but because of the use of contraceptives. The work towards a healthier future. central nervous system of those highly caffeinated is severely over-stimu- lated. Many patients have reported nervousness, excitement, rapid heart beat and uncontrolled thought processes. Each symptom paves a path to a list of more complex anxiety and sleep disorders. The lethal dose of caffeine with respect to coffee is anywhere from 140 – 180 cups. It is a level of intoxi- cation that few have reached, but it is a fact that once there, death is imminent—the central nervous system would be far too active. The threat is real and it is so much closer than many youth believe. Even more deadly than the conventional cup of coffee is the caffeine pill. One caf- feine pill contains about 200 milligrams of caffeine, which is roughly two cups of strong coffee. Along with the obvious use, caffeine pills are used as weight loss supplements. It is true that one pill can lead to a more alert human being, but two pills shove one across the line into Caffeinism. Most people, how- ever, do not stop at two. The addictive aspect of caffeine makes it so there is continual intake—on a daily basis—of caffeine at increasing levels. To use these drugs safely, it is very important to increase calcium intake (as caffeine lowers the body’s utilization of calcium) and to continue to check heart rate. The most important of any recommenda- tion when one uses caffeine pills is to make sure to slowly taper off the total dosage. Addiction to caffeine pills almost never ends Page 10 Features The Hoof Beat Latino Fest A glimpse of the rich Hispanic culture

by Muhammad Akhtar Traditional events are a way for Northside students to immerse themselves in another culture. In the past few years, students have seen art expressed through the lens of African, Asian, and even Hawaiian culture. This year’s Latino Fest was a success in providing the student body with a rare and powerful glimpse into the rich culture of Hispanics with all the grandeur Northside can deliver. Latino Fest began at 6:30 p.m., a few hours after the Tur- key Bowl ended. Many students, parents, and faculty members soon began to purchase tickets, priced at $2 for students and $5 for just about everyone else. The show began in the auditorium with the Puerto Rican national anthem. This was followed by two dances from Sabor Latino. The salsa came first, creating a lively atmosphere and energizing the crowd. The merengue, a joy- ful dance from the Dominican Republic, came second. After Sabor Latino left the stage to a monstrous applause, Jose Choto, Adv. 804, recited an uplifting poem titled “La Rasa” (meaning race or ethnicity). A play was delivered next, inspired by the movie “Stand and De- liver.” Before intermission, Amy Bombazo Dance Company poses in front of the auditorium during Latino Fest 2006. The Hoof Beat Student Newspaper The path before Northside’s new principal

The Hoofbeat would like to congratulate and welcome Mr. Barry Rodgers as Northside’s new principal. Northside has always been a community where creativity and an open mind must come first. Dr. Lalley excelled with these traits. Based upon his profile provided by the LSC as well as his statements at the student meeting, it seems like Mr. Rodgers may just be able to fill these massive shoes that Dr. Lalley leaves behind. It takes more than good intentions and an open mind to run a CPS school, however, especially one like Northside. First, being able to properly interface with the CPS ad- ministration downtown is key. With budget deficits abound and an intense political stratum, the business and bureaucra- cy sides of Chicago Public Schools are no laughing matter. Northside needs a leader that will be able to stand up for its decidedly different values in an environment in which they may not entirely gel. Protect colloquium. There was talk back when funding was at its worst that significant changes might have to be made to Northside’s colloquium program, or that it may have to be removed altogether. Not only would this remove so much of what makes Northside a unique and brilliant school, but it would show great contempt for its students. Lauded as the pinnacles of CPS academia, Northside students are worthy of both the innovation that colloquium provides and the much-needed reprieve that it grants. The Interactive Math Program is one innovation that would not be missed. Recent claims have shown that teachers and board members across the nation view it as a failed ex- periment, and Northside students of all grade levels bemoan it incessantly. It’s something of a bandwagon to be sure, but not without reason. Northside’s math scores on standardized tests have raised eyebrows and could certainly use improve- ment. While it assuredly comes down to the math depart- ment’s call, not to mention whether or not the school has the funding for new textbooks, Mr. Rodgers would be wise to sternly re-evaluate Northside’s continued use of a program in stock isn’t wasted. Every time I hear the word “gay” uttered as a synonym for stupid or someone call somebody a “faggot,” I am a bit taken aback, es- pecially at Northside where we are in an environment of what we like to consider very intelligent people. These words are the mark of a lack of education and a phobic prejudice against a large sector of our American society. The use of the word “faggot” is certainly appalling. Much like it is not acceptable to call someone a “spic,” a “coon,” a “chink,” or “re- tarded,” there is simply no way to justify calling people “fags.” There is no real explanation for why you would use the word “faggot” other than that you believe that there is something wrong with being gay, because by deeming something else that you loathe gay, this is
