Toyota UK: success… reloaded

On October 1, 1965, for the first Toyota’s rise here has been swift and time, customers could buy a Toyota decisive. It all started with a few local car in the UK: the imported third- dealers importing cars in the mid-sixties generation Corona. Fifty years on, – first the Toyota Corona, and then, in The company’s heritage fleet includes the Corona 1966, the legendary Corolla. By 1980, saloon, the famous Corolla AE86 that helped as the company enters its next half following sales of some 200,000 cars, inspire today’s GT86 coupé, a first-generation century selling on these shores, RAV4 and one of the earliest British-built models, Toyota had already become a major a 1992-vintage Carina E. Toyota boasts two UK factories, player in the UK market. 4,000 local employees and 22 years building 3.35m British vehicles.

8 Investing for the long term Fast-forward nine years, to 1989, and another defining moment: Toyota announced its intent

to invest £2bn to establish a major vehicle Fleet Focused manufacturing capability in Britain. By 1992, true to its word, Toyota Manufacturing UK’s Burnaston car plant in Derbyshire and engine factory in Deeside, North Wales, were both in production – providing jobs and opportunities for more than 200 UK suppliers.

Local quality in global demand Today, manufacturing more than’ 128,000 new vehicles a year, including the latest generation of and Auris models, Burnaston is one of the world’s greenest, most energy-efficient and highest- quality automotive production facilities. Every 66 seconds, a car rolls off the line destined for any one of 56 worldwide markets – even including Japan. Meanwhile in Deeside some 225,000 are built annually, destined for plants around the world.

This includes driving nearly 600 miles in a single day under the harshest, most adverse driving conditions.

10 TOUGH LOVE AND TOYOTA: DAKAR RALLY

From 3rd January to 16th January Fleet Focused 2016, cars, motorbikes, quads and trucks battled some of the world’s toughest motorsport terrain in the Dakar Rally. After a gruelling 13 stages and 5,500 miles through Argentina and Bolivia, Toyota claimed a third consecutive win in the Production Division category. Furthermore, over 40% of the competitors who crossed the finishing line in Rosario were in a Toyota.

Seen as one of the ultimate tests of reliability and endurance, the Dakar Rally has been running since 1979. Toyota has been a prominent and hugely successful competitor because of the robustness, ease of maintenance and reliability of its vehicles. Both the Dakar field camera crew and medical team put all their trust in Toyota vehicles too.

11 Naturally seeding a greener business

It’s not just Toyota’s greener production processes and cleaner cars that are leading the way. In a unique project, Toyota is collaborating with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, to introduce native British flora and fauna to the company’s UK factory sites and office locations.

13 Intelligent technology promises automated driving

Toyota has started testing a system designed to execute a series of driving manoeuvres safely and automatically.

Called ‘Highway Teammate’, the system’s first trials have taken place on Tokyo’s Shuto Expressway. The test vehicle, a modified Lexus GS, is capable of entirely automated motorway driving from the slipway entrance to the exit.

On-board systems monitor traffic conditions, make decisions and take actions such as merging onto or exiting the road, maintaining or changing lanes and keeping a set distance from other traffic. 14 LEXUS HOVERBOARD TAKES FLIGHT Fleet Focused
