Still Paul Robeson Library Rutgers University Camden, NJ [email protected] There has been a continuing discussion in library literature on the library as place and on the image of librarians in popular media, but there is little information on the librarian as person. The discussion on librarianship as a profession tends to focus on technology and not so much the people, other than the people skills needed in reference or teaching skills needed for instruction. The worth of the individual librarian tends to get lost in the shuffle. Before we disappear into the machine, it is useful to look at other future scenarios and similar occupations, either reality based or fiction. In this particular case, it is interesting to compare librarians to those in an occupation created by a renowned science fiction author. Robert Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land, his most famous and most controversial novel, is a science fiction classic. The science fiction community recognized it with a Hugo Award, and the book was the first science fiction title to be on the New York Times bestseller list (Stover, 1987, p. 45). Heinlein outlined the novel in 1949 and finished the first draft in 1955 but on the advice of his wife set it aside. It was not published until 1961. The manuscript was edited heavily and an uncut version was published in 1991. -

Allen Christine Anderson Dr. John R. Allen serves as the Program Executive for Crew Health Christine Anderson is the Executive Director of the New Mexico and Safety at NASA Headquarters, Washington DC, where he Spaceport Authority. She is responsible for the development oversees the space medicine activities conducted at the Johnson and operation of the first purpose-built commercial spaceport-- Space Center, Houston, Texas. Dr. Allen received a B.A. in Speech Spaceport America. She is a recently retired Air Force civilian Communication from the University of Maryland (1975), a M.A. with 30 years service. Anderson was the founding Director of the Space from Baylor College of Medicine (1996). Upon completion of Vehicles Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland his Master’s degree, he worked for the Easter Seals Treatment Air Force Base, New Mexico. She also served as the Director Center in Rockville, Maryland as an audiologist and speech- of the Space Technology Directorate at the Air Force Phillips language pathologist and received certification in both areas. "History"refers to both a subject matterand a thoughtprocess. That thoughtprocess involves raising questions, marshallingevidence, discerningpatterns in the evidence, writing narratives,and critiquingthe narrativeswrit- ten by others. Whatever subject matter they study, all historians employ the thought process of historicalthinking. What if historianswere to extend the process of historicalthinking into the subjectmat- ter domain of the future?Historians would breach one of our profession's most rigid dis- ciplinarybarriers. Very few historiansventure predictions about the future, and those who do are viewed with skepticism by the profession at large. On methodological grounds, most historiansreject as either impractical,quixotic, hubristic,or dangerousany effort to examine the past as a way to make predictionsabout the future. However, where at one time thinking about the future did mean making a scientifical- ly-based prediction,futurists today arejust as likely to think in terms of scenarios.Where a predictionis a definitive statementabout what will be, scenarios are heuristicnarratives that explore alternativeplausibilities of what might be. Scenario writers, like historians, understandthat surprise,contingency, and deviations from the trend line are the rule, not the exception; among scenario writers, context matters.The thought process of the sce- nario method shares many features with historical thinking. With only minimal intellec- tual adjustment,then, most professionally trainedhistorians possess the necessary skills to write methodologicallyrigorous "historiesof the future." History, according to Kevin Reilly, is both a noun and a verb.' By this Reilly means that "history" refers to both a subject matter-a body of knowledge-and a thought process, a disciplined habit of mind. -

CHAPTER FOURTEEN MEN INTO SPACE: THE SPACE RACE AND ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION MARGARET A. WEITEKAMP The origins of the Cold War space race were not only political and technological, but also cultural.1 On American television, the drama, Men into Space (CBS, 1959-60), illustrated one way that entertainment television shaped the United States’ entry into the Cold War space race in the 1950s. By examining the program’s relationship to previous space operas and spaceflight advocacy, a close reading of the 38 episodes reveals how gender roles, the dangers of spaceflight, and the realities of the Moon as a place were depicted. By doing so, this article seeks to build upon and develop the recent scholarly investigations into cultural aspects of the Cold War. The space age began with the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. But the space race that followed was not a foregone conclusion. When examining the United States, scholars have examined all of the factors that led to the space technology competition that emerged.2 Notably, Howard McCurdy has argued in Space and the American Imagination (1997) that proponents of human spaceflight 1 Notably, Asif A. Pal would produce four highly imaginative films during the period 1951-1955: When Worlds Collide (1951), The War Of The Worlds (1953), The Naked Jungle (1954) and Conquest of Space (1955). These pictures would employ top actors, large casts and the elite of the Paramount special effects and art departments, and each would provide film composers with the opportunity to underscore spectacle, astonishing visual effects, terror and intense human drama. With its world-spanning plot and chaotic scenes of humanity preparing for the threat of approaching planets, When Worlds Collide features by far the busiest and most energetic score of the three sci-fi films represented on this set. Leith Stevens' eerie, foreboding melody for the approaching planets dominates the score, reinforcing both the menace of the looming planets and the boiling cauldron of human emotions that threaten to derail humanity's last hopes. The War Of The Worlds showcased scenes of destruction and mass panic that outdid even When Worlds Collide. Leith Stevens managed to find a fresh way to pay homage to Gustav Holsts' "Mars, The Bringer Of War" from The Planets. Instead of mimicking Holsts' famous rhythms, Stevens overlays driving percussion onto his main title music, which launches from a spiky, startling fanfare through a gloomy yet propulsive dirge for humanity finally brightening into brilliant, spine- chilling major chords. -

Wagner, Chair This dissertation examines the work of the San Francisco-based artist Jess (1923-2004). Jess’s multimedia and cross-disciplinary practice, which takes the form of collage, assemblage, drawing, painting, film, illustration, and poetry, offers a perspective from which to consider a matrix of issues integral to the American postwar period. These include domestic space and labor; alternative family structures; myth, rationalism, and excess; and the salvage and use of images in the atomic age. The dissertation has a second protagonist, Robert Duncan (1919-1988), preeminent American poet and Jess’s partner and primary interlocutor for nearly forty years. Duncan and Jess built a household and a world together that transgressed boundaries between poetry and painting, past and present, and acknowledged the limits and possibilities of living and making daily. -
