MIN. BID AUGUST RARE SOUL AUCTION & A RICKY ALLEN CUT YOU LOSE (sic) TAM-BOO 6720 M- 600 Though born in Nashville, Allen made his way as a blues singer in Chicago (from 1960 onwards), he was frequently pulled towards – what was known as ‘hard soul’ in the Windy City. He had a small hit on Age with ‘Cut You A-Loose’ in ’63 – before updating it in ’67 without any success whatsoever. This is that recording backed with ‘Soul Street’ which is also very in-demand, we have therefore ‘soundbitten’ both sides. B GEORGE KIRBY WHAT CAN I DO CADET 5523 D M- 200 Comedian George Kirby made two or three records of which this is easily the best. A big Wigan first-play for Richard Searling in the late seventies. Kirby’s rather tragic story is revealed in full in Searling’s ‘Setting The Record Straight’ book. C SY HIGHTOWER I KNOW YOU’RE LEAVING ME CARMEN 1002 M- 300 Sylvester Hightower hailed from Florida but this super seventies midtempo piece produced by Natural Four producer Willie Hoskins came out of Hollywood. When mellow, midtempo came back into vogue in the late 80s, this was a leading item. D LEROY BARBOUR I AIN’T GOING NOWHERE FRONTIERSMAN M- 250 Apparently this obscure label is ‘the sound of the Nobel Jets’, whatever that means. Barbour would appear to be the same singer who in the recent decades has made a plethora of light soul/gospel records, but this seventies release is his first. Producer is Phillip Mitchell, possibly the famous Phillip… but he can’t remember the disc! E WILLIE WADE WHEN PUSH COMES TO NITE LIFE 70,001 VG++ 400 SHOVE Wilbur Wade was reputedly a member of the Jades who did ‘I’m Where It’s At’ on the same short-lived, Bell-distributed label. This is the release before the Jades, released in July 1966 and is a splendid double-sider, much mellower than ‘I’m Where It’s At’. ‘Come Into My World’ is also ‘soundbitten’ therefore. The brother of co-writer Warner Wiedler was once married to Doris Day! F DOTTIE & MILLIE TALKIN’ ABOUT MY BABY TOPPER 1014 M- 200 Lots of calls when we set-saled this Detroit gem a few months ago… then the person didn’t send for it! The duo were Dottie Haynes and Millie Weaver and this 1966 release would appear to be their only 45 – certainly under that name. G ERNEST MOSLEY STUBBORN HEART LA-CINDY 225 M- 500 Nice condition is not often found on this classic spin from the mid-seventies. There is a minor mark on the flipside (the official A-side) ‘Keep On Loving Me’, plus someone has written a small number 4 on the ‘Stubborn’ side. We think this is secondary to the Sheppards release which ended up on Mirwood but not by that much and it has always been considerably rarer. H AD-LIBS I DON’T NEED NO PASSION 1 M- 500 FORTUNE TELLER This 1982 release is certainly the pick of this great group’s somewhat obscure swansong (which continued into the nineties) and recorded at Joel Katz’s Broadway South studio. As far as we can tell this is a different line-up to the sixties group but they still turn out some superb modern soul. I JESSIE JAMES ARE YOU GONNA SHIRLEY 119 M- 600 LEAVE ME Almost perfect condition on this 1966 midtempo winner which shares the same backing track as the Arcades ‘There’s Got To Be A Loser’ with a nod towards ‘I’m The One Who Loves You’ by Jerry Butler or The Impressions. Real name James Herbert McClelland, this is easily the best (and the last) of a clutch of 45s he recorded for the California label in the early 60s. J THE POETS WRAPPED AROUND J-2 1302 VG++ 750 YOUR FINGER Very obscure Juggy Murray label had only 3 ‘didn’t-make-it-past-the-end-of-the-street’ releases, one of which was this wonderful fingersnapper from the Poets, written by lead singer Ronnie Lewis. Certainly has wear on the vinyl but plays well (check soundbite). K MATT BROWN THANK YOU BABY JAR-VAL 0006 M- 250 Produced and written by Atlanta legend Tee Fletcher, this is the same singer who recorded with his cousin Robert ‘Salvation’ Thomas as Matt and Robert. He was from Macon, Georgia but the Sew City release (New Jersey) by Matthew Brown is also him. Two sides for your money here so we’ve recorded both for you. L SAM BUTLER I CAN’T GET OVER SRI 00017 M- 200 Two eighties releases in one auction prove that it didn’t all finish on the 31st December 1979! Out of Miami, this scarce 1981 release has two sides of which the more uptempo ‘I Can Tell’ hasn’t really been featured to our knowledge. We’ve placed it on the soundbite. M TOMMY RIDGLEY MY LOVE GETS INTERNATIONAL M- 100 STRONGER CITY 7102 0 New Orleans legend Tommy Ridgley died exactly 20 years ago this month (11th August). Amongst scores of fine recordings going back as far as 1949, this is his Northern soul moment released in 1968 and also done in ‘unreleased-at-the-time’ format by Gloria Edwards. N ELLA WOODS I NEED YOUR LOVE MERGING 420 M- 200 An almost totally unknown singer on a late sixties effort out of Los Angeles. Deemed to be a crossover record it would equally fit the description of ‘midtempo Northern Soul’. A whole host of obscure names connected to this 45 remind us that there is still much to be known about the full history of soul. O EDDIE BISHOP CALL ME ABC-PARAMOUNT M- 200 10799 Bishop’s instrumental version of the pop standard hits a great groove it has to be admitted and must be rarer on stock copy at the end of the day. Non-hits on major labels are often that way. !
