This year we are looking forward not only to an exciting season of top-class handball played between Europe’s elite but also to marking another milestone in the competition’s history – 10 years of the VELUX EHF FINAL4. We are once again expecting a full-house of almost 20,000 fans in Cologne’s LANXESS arena on 1/2 June 2019 for what promises to be an unforgettable anniversary event. Last season finished on a real high, with Montpellier HB returning to the throne in stunning fashion after 15 long years of waiting. Their success underlines the strengths of the competition’s playing format, with just about any team capable of picking up that coveted trophy regardless of which group they start the competition in. Standing in Montpellier’s way this season in Group A is a formidable line-up of teams including the eight-time champions from Barça Lassa, the 2017 winners HC Vardar and the 2016 trophy holders PGE Vive Kielce. In Group B, the challenge is no less daunting with two previous winners of the EHF Champions League SG Flensburg-Handewitt and Celje Pivovarna Lasko competing alongside last season’s runners-up HBC Nantes and semi-finalists Paris Saint-Germain Handball as well as the brand new Hungarian champions MOL-PICK Szeged. Everything is also wide open in Groups C/D as all of the 12 teams including eight national champions have a good chance of following Montpellier’s example from last season and making it through to the knock-out stages. While Tatran Presov from Slovakia, Bjerringbro- Silkeborg from Denmark and Wacker Thun from Switzerland return to the VELUX EHF Champions League after a break, there is also a first for the competition with the addition of the Finnish champions Riihimäen Cocks to Europe’s elite. With TV interest continuing to grow and the addition of two new sponsors Nord Stream 2 (premium sponsor) and Betano (regional sponsor), the VELUX EHF Champions League has firmly established itself as one of the leading competitions on the European sports market. Da man vor der Saison insbesondere wegen der Belastung durch die Königsklasse in die Kaderbreite inves- tiert hat, sollte dies besser zu lösen sein als in den vergange- nen Jahren. Gegen Barcelona haben die Löwen jedenfalls gleich einmal gezeigt, dass sie es mit jeder Mannschaft auf- nehmen können. Eine ähnliche Leistung gegen Brest abzuru- fen, wird dennoch zur Herausforderung. Patrick Groetzki, der gegen den großen FCB einen Sahnetag er- wischt hatte und fünf von fünf Würfen versenkte, beschrieb die Voraussetzungen so: Gegen ein Weltklasse-Team wie Barcelona zu spielen, sei etwas Besonderes, das gebe einem als Spieler einen „Extra-Push“. Welcome and introduction Following the completion of a combined meeting of the Nations Board and European Handball League Board, the EHLB chairman, Larsson, welcomed everybody to the meeting. He also welcomed Siniša Ostoić from the SEHA League, who he confirmed would now be joining the European Handball League Board as a guest in order to provide a connection to SEHA league and all the countries playing in that league. 2. EHLB meeting 03/2019 – Minutes and follow up Larsson reviewed the minutes of the last meeting of the board on 11 March 2019 in Vienna. He also reported on informal meetings, which took place on the fringes of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne with representatives of top leagues including Denmark, France, Sweden, Germany, Italy and also SEHA league. He reported on the difficult situation in France (and some other top leagues with existing contracts) with the new playing days of the EHF club competitions during the week but highlighted the fact that leagues had known about these changes since the competition workshop held by the EHF in Zagreb January 2018 at the Men’s EHF EURO 2018; he stated that leagues will have to adapt going forward and it was agreed that fixed playing days for these competitions was an improvement.

    Die Löwen Kommen – Steigert Sich Die MT Am Gegner?

    Die Löwen kommen – steigert sich die MT am Gegner? Kontrastprogramm für die MT Melsungen in der LIQUI MOLY Handball-Bundesliga: Am Sonntag waren die Nordhessen zu Gast beim Kellerkind in Ludwigshafen, am Donnerstag empfangen sie das Top-Team der Rhein-Neckar Löwen. Anwurf in der Kasseler Rothenbach-Halle ist um 19:00 Uhr. Ab 18:00 Uhr gibt es das 30-minütige MT-Warm Up “Kurz vor Anpfiff live” auf YouTube und Facebook, Sky startet mit der Konferenz um 18:30 Uhr. Das Spiel selbst wird Karsten Petrzika kommentieren, Experte ist Stefan Kretzschmar. Duelle zwischen der MT Melsungen und den Rhein-Neckar Löwen bieten von jeher einen hohen Spannungs- und Unterhaltungsfaktor. Das war schon zu Zweitligazeiten so. Da hatte die MT meist die Nasenspitze vorn. Wie am Ende besagter Ära in 2005, als die Nordhessen unter MSG Melsungen/Böddiger firmierten und die Saison mit drei Punkten Vorsprung vor der SG Kronau Östringen als Meister abschlossen. Aufgestiegen sind indes beide Vereine und so fanden die sportlichen Vergleiche ihre Fortsetzung in der stärksten Liga der Welt. Dort aber wendete sich recht schnell das Blatt, meist gaben dann die Löwen den Ton vor den Bartenwetzern an. Wie auch die Statistik bestätigt: von den 30 Erstligavergleichen endeten 22 mit einem Sieg der Kraichgauer. Nun also steht Duell Nummer 31 an. Auch jetzt sprechen die Vorzeichen etwas mehr für die Gelbhemden. Erfolgreich unterwegs in der EHF European League – hier ist der Einzug ins Viertelfinale geglückt – fungiert das Team von Trainer Martin Schwalb in der LIQUI MOLY Handball- Bundesliga als erster Verfolger des Führungstrios aus Flensburg, Magdeburg und Kiel.
