Squamish Public Library launches new Visiting Library Service

During National Volunteer Week, the Squamish Public Library is excited to announce the launch of a new Visiting Library Service and volunteer program!

As an extension of the Library’s Take-Out service that has grown out of the pandemic, the Library will launch a new Visiting Library Service to homebound Elders and seniors in our community, with the help of trained Visiting Library Service Volunteers. Homebound seniors and Elders may register for this new service by contacting the library or on the library’s website: www.squamishlibrary.ca/visiting-library-service

Once registered, homebound patrons will be contacted by a volunteer over the phone to discuss their needs and interests. Volunteers will select materials on behalf of, or in collaboration with patrons and will pick up materials from the Library, then deliver to homebound patrons on a monthly basis in a safe and socially distanced manner.

A pilot program has been running since early March with several volunteers. The Library worked with the input from other community organizations to engage with Elders and seniors during early discussions about this program and to develop a program that meets the expressed needs of those in our community. The Library’s Project Coordinator Diana Gunstone says, “We are so grateful for the feedback and support from Sea to Sky Hospice Society, Hilltop House, Better at Home and the Squamish Elders Program, and inspired by the support and community interest during our initial conversations with many in our community.”

The Library aims to launch what will become an ongoing sustainable service and volunteer program to better connect and include isolated and homebound residents in our community – as well as providing new community volunteer service opportunities. This service will only grow as the capacity of volunteers matches community interest and registrations, as sustainability and volunteer capacity is key to its success.

In the future, the Library is considering the possibility of offering this service to all ages of homebound residents. The original funding to develop this program was awarded from the 2020 Union of BC Municipalities Age Friendly Communities grant program, funded by the province of BC, and the service will begin by supporting seniors and Elders.

“Our challenge going forward will be to respond to the interest of Patrons with trained volunteer capacity in a responsive manner, as we believe we have a sustainable and valuable new service to offer, subject to and thanks to the amazing community volunteers who sign up,” says Gunstone.

For more information on how to register or apply as a volunteer, please visit www.squamishlibrary.ca/visiting-library-service or contact the library at 604-892-3110 or [email protected]

After registering, confirmation via email or text should come within 15- 30 minutes, but could take up to 24 hours.

CALL TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT You can register by phone at 1-833-838-2323. This new provincial number replaces the phone lines the health authorities had been operating. Phone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., every day, with reduced hours on statutory holidays.

You can call to register if you are 18 or older and self-identify as Indigenous (status or non- status , Metis or Inuit). There is no requirement to provide proof of ancestry.

SQUAMISH NATION VACCINATION CLINICS The Squamish Nation anticipates to be holding clinics for the second dose of the vaccine in mid- summer, and we will update members as soon as we receive more information from the health authorities.

Reminder: There are still active cases of COVID-19 both in the Squamish Nation community and in the wider community. Everyone must keep following the general COVID-19 safety guidelines, even after getting the first COVID-19 vaccine. That’s because we don’t know how long the vaccine will last or how well it prevents us from transmitting COVID-19 to others, even if we don’t have symptoms.

Help us reach community immunity and continue keeping our community safe by:  Staying home and not gathering with anyone if you are told by Public Health to isolate or quarantine.  Not gathering indoors, and following public health guidelines for outdoor gatherings.

We must all do our part to keep each other safe. Learn more: www.gov.bc.ca/covid19restrictions
