These are the words that reflect the essence of our federation. We are a commonwealth of athletes supporting fellow athletes, coaches giving their all to their gym- nasts, judges encouraging our competitors, volunteers giving their time to our clubs and events, and clubs providing safe and healthy environments for all. Throughout the year, we all hear the stories that make us so proud to be part of the gymnastics com- munity of Ontario. From the young child who can be heard saying “Coach, I did it!!” to the pride of our competitors standing on the world stage, we all share a common love and commitment to our sport. We are touched by the stories brought to our attention throughout the year of clubs sponsoring chil- dren in need and of clubs helping other clubs whose facilities are under repair. We hear of coaches and judges who show up each day with a smile on their face, even though they are managing personal sorrows at home. And through it all, every member of our great federation is there to step forward and say “How can I help?” This is what makes our federation the best that there is! On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Gymnastics Ontario, we congratulate all of our mem- bers on a very successful year, and look forward to an exciting year ahead. This past season the staff have been functioning in lead roles on the Canadian Sport for Life Develop- ment Project, the High Five Quality Assurance reports, the delivery of over 30 competitions and well over 40 training camps. The staff contribution to the sport is both paramount to its success and vital to the continuation of realiz- ing our strategic plans. OUR COMMITTEES The Knowledge & Experience The Technical Committees and Working Groups within Gymnastics Ontario have proven their continued indispensability in advancing and enhancing the programs and services offered by Gymnastics Ontario. Their dedication is almost moot as they continually strive for success in the wake of all obstacles in their path. Their participation in undertaking a variety of projects this past year has been paramount to the former successes. The Women’s Artistic Technical Committee deserves itself a special recogni- tion from this previous season as they were faced with continuing their ef- forts to establish a continuation of the many successes from the late Dr. Gene Sutton. They have strived diligently to ensure that the Women’s Pro- gram is able to maintain itself as a leader in so many areas of our sport. 4 Our People The Heart OUR Volunteers. Some strive to create cham- pion athletes, but all clubs strive to achieve improved physical prowess for its mem- bers. Gymnastics is a foundation sport and we are continually impressed by our member clubs’ commitment to spreading the message of gymnastics to their com- munities, friends and family. Our clubs understand that gymnastics is a business, a healthy activity and a lifestyle like no other. The Passion OUR COACHES & JUDGES The coaches and judges within gymnastics are essential to the sport’s survival. They represent development in the sport through mentoring, coaching and producing our future. Leadership qualities can be seen in each and every one of them that are com- parable only to the best in their business. Our athletes, in each discipline, are so lucky to have them stand behind them with support in every aspect of their gymnas- tic lives. Coaches and judges create bonds with athletes built on the foundation of a love for gymnastics that is continued throughout their lives. They are the profession- als who enable our sport to continue to thrive. The Purpose OUR ATHLETES “A 7 hour 11 minute spacewalk – the ultimate gymnastics routine”, Steve MacLean, Canadian astronaut and first gymnast to walk in space. Sport Starts Here... and can take you anywhere. Our athletes truly understand the value of gymnastics and what it does to develop them into positive and healthy people. CAMBRIDGE SPORTS HALL OF FAME Victoria Moors November 5, 1996 - Coached by longtime Cambridge coach Elvira Saadi, Victoria Ashley Moors represented Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the same Games in which middle-distance runner Nathan Brannen, also from Cambridge, represented Canada in the 1500 metres. Her younger sister Brooklyn, also coached by Saadi, would go on to compete at the 2017 World Championships in Montreal. Moors got her start under Saadi, herself a former Olympian who com- peted for Russia at the 1976 Montreal Games, at an early age and in 2010 she competed at Elite Canada in Gatineau, Quebec. Saadi has a long and successful coaching history in Canada. She coached Canadian Olympians including Cambridge's Yvonne Tousek and Crystal Gilmore. At the Elite Canada event, Moors won the all-around competition with a score of 53.100. In event finals, she placed first on vault, scoring 13.450; first on uneven bars, scoring 13.400; and first on floor, scoring 15.250. It was a portent of things to come. In May 2011 Moors won the all-around title at the Canadian Championships in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, with a score of 56.925. In event finals, she placed third on vault, scoring 13.625; first on uneven bars, scoring 13.925; and first on floor, scoring 15.425. At that time Moors left the Cambridge Kips gymnastics club — the club founded by Don and Benita Rope many years earlier — to follow her coach Saadi, who had begun the Dynamo Gymnastics club, which was also located in Cambridge.
