Marpesia corinna Latreille 1813 Superfamilia: PAPILIONOIDEA Familia: NYMPHALIDAE Subfamilia: Nymphalinae Descripción. Mariposa de tamaño grande, dorsalmente con una coloración oscura con una banda naranja, ancha, localizada entre el área postmedia y marginal del ala anterior. Ala posterior con una mancha fucsia que nace desde la base hasta el área postmedia. Presenta además dos proyecciones caudales, una de estas, de mayor tamaño localizada hacia el margen distal. Longitud del ala anterior: 29 - 32 mm. Aspectos ecológicos. Es bastante común en los períodos de sequía al borde de los caminos y al interior del bosque, también se le puede encontrar en áreas aledañas a corrientes de agua. Acostumbra posarse en pequeños charcos o sobre el suelo húmedo. Su vuelo es bastante rápido y rasante o al nivel del estrato herbáceo. Es muy activa durante las horas de mayor intensidad lumínica (Álvarez 1993). La planta nutricia de sus orugas es el Ficus sp. de la familia de las Moráceas. Distribución. En Colombia esta presente en la región andina entre 1800 y 2000 m (García – Robledo et al. 2002). En la cuenca del río Coello en la localidad Cay (1714 m). Alas con proyecciones caudales, patas anteriores muy reducidas y densamente cubiertas de vellosidades por lo que solo dos pares son ambulatorias. El tórax y el abdomen son anchos, la venación que presenta la celda discal es de tipo abierto en ambas alas. Ventralmente las alas exhiben una banda blanca que parte desde la base hasta la mitad del área media y de ahí en adelante una banda de color pardo hacia la margen distal. -

We explore the influence of each gene region on the support given to each node of the most parsimonious tree derived from a combined analysis of all three genes using Partitioned Bremer Support. We also explore the influence of assuming equal weights for all characters in the combined analysis by investigating the stability of clades to different transition/transversion weighting schemes. We find many strongly supported and stable clades in the Nymphalinae. We are also able to identify ‘rogue’ -

We hope to be able to give more information in the next issue. A reminder about the 6th International Symposium to be held in Turin 16 to 19 September 2014. while the main article concerns a little known simuliidologist, Arthur Pomeroy, who led a remarkable life. The future of the British Simuliid Group and the Bulletin. Founded in 1979, The British Simuliid Group’s objective was to coordinate blackfly research in the U.K. and to provide a means of disseminating knowledge. At that time a stimulus to research was provided by the growth of the WHO Onchocerciasis Control Programme and the research funds available from WHO and other funding agencies and interested countries. Inevitably, due to the passage of time, the completion of the WHO Vector Control Programme and the activities of the Grim Reaper the number of active blackfly workers in Britain has now fallen from its peak of about 40 to a mere half dozen. -

British Simuliid Group Bulletin (February 2009) Number 31 1 FROM THE EDITOR This 31st Bulletin follows the very successful 3rd International Simuliidae Symposium held in Vilnius in September 2008, and therefore contains a brief description of the meeting. It is also accompanied by a slightly condensed version of the Abstract Book containing the authors’ abstracts of both the oral presentations and posters. It is your Editor’s opinion that the general standard of the papers was high, and because most of the delegates were housed in the conference hotel, there was close social contact as we all met over breakfast and lunch. For me, a life-long controller of Simuliids, the most significant event was the presentation of two papers by Cheke, Traore and colleagues and a video film of the eradication of the Bioko form of Simulium yahense from the island of Bioko off the west coast of Central Africa, thereby halting the transmission of river blindness on that island. The symposium also highlighted the increasing numbers of scientists from central Europe who are interested in the Simuliidae. -

The wing span of Hypanartia lethe ranges from approximately 40-50mm (Raguso, 2015). The body of the orange mapwing, also known as the orange admiral, is light brown in colour. The forewings are orange with brown apex and outer margin (Fig. 1). The hindwings are mostly orange with a few brown spots around the edges. The butterfly got the name orange mapwing because of the map-like pattern under its wings (Fig. 2). Male mapwings are brighter in colour than females, so that the male butterfly would be able to successfully attract the female for mating (Lotts et al., 2016). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. The orange mapwing is a widespread as well as a common species, found in Paraguay, Trinidad, Texas, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru and Mexico. These butterflies prefer mountainous, forested and riverside habitats. They can be commonly found in forested areas up to an altitude of 1270-1400m (Raguso, 2015) UWI The Online Guide to the Animals of Trinidad and Tobago Diversity REPRODUCTION AND LIFE CYCLE. The orange mapwing reproduces sexually. The female butterfly produces pheromones which are chemicals that are released by animals (mostly mammals and insects) into the environment; pheromones affect the behaviour of other animals of the same species. When the female orange mapwing releases these pheromones, male mapwings detect the chemical and would then attempt to mate with the female. -

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -
