The Masterclasses of the 16th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival offer promise for the future of filmmaking, acting as a crossroads of cultures where cineastes of varying styles can come and share via a universal cinematographic language that is expressed through the many facets of cinema.

PAUL HAGGIS Director

Born in Canada, Paul Haggis cut his teeth writing many TV series, including the critically-acclaimed EZ Streets, considered by the New York Times as one of the most influential series of all time. After picking up all the top accolades in television, it was a natural move to apply his talent to the big screen. In 2006, Haggis became the first screenwriter in movie history to write two films that won Best Picture Oscar in consecutive years: by in 2004, and Crash in 2005, which he also directed. Crash also won the Best Screenplay Oscar, alongside nominations in four other categories including Best Director. Haggis’s work is notable for its liberty and social engagement, taking on diverse topics such as racism in Crash, forgiveness in Million Dollar Baby, and the war in Iraq for .

PAVEL LOUNGUINE Director

Born in 1949 in Moscow into a screenwriting family, Pavel Lungin emerged onto the auteur scene when he won the 1990 Best Director award at the Festival de Cannes for his first film, Taxi Blues, dealing with the throes of the post- Communist era. From then on, his work focused on describing the evolution in his country, encompassing social and political satire against the backdrop of a society in perpetual crisis. With Tycoon: A New Russian, he denounced the practices of today’s Russian mafia, while in The Island, which screened at the in 2006, he tackled orthodox mysticism and explored the notion of saintliness through a lyrical and majestic work.

Born in 1938 in Amsterdam, Paul Verhoeven has produced an eclectic body of work, made on both sides of the Atlantic. Subversive yet popular, Verhoeven enjoys applying pressure just where it hurts.
