Scoring Scale: Scoring will be on the basis of 0 to infinity, with 70 denoting an average performance. The judge will score each maneuver based on the performance of the horse and add or subtract penalties and/or maneuver scores from 70. +1½ Excellent +1 Very good +½ Good 0 Correct -½ Poor -1 Very poor -1½ Extremely poor ½ POINT PENALTIES 0 SCORE: No placing or ribbon to be awarded Starting circle at a jog or exiting rollbacks at a jog up to two strides (four steps) Failure to complete pattern as written Over/under spinning up to 1/8 of a turn Performing the maneuver other than in the specified order Failure to remain min of 20 feet from wall/fence when approaching stop/rollback Skipping an obstacle, or no attempt to perform an obstacle Failure to change lead by one stride Inclusion of maneuvers not specified Backing more than two strides (four steps) 1 POINT PENALTIES A turn of more than 90 degrees where not specified Each time the horse is out of lead Overturns more than ¼ turn Over/under spinning from 1/8 to ¼ of a turn Equipment failure that delays completion of pattern Failure to change lead more than ones stride but prior to the next maneuver Running away or failing to guide where impossible to discern whether on pattern Failure to be in correct lead when rounding the end of the arena Jogging an excess of ½ circle or ½ length of the arena while starting a circle, circling or exiting a rollback (except when required in the pattern) Use of more than one finger between split reins, Changing hands on reins 2 POINT PEALTIES Use of two hands (exception junior horses ridden in a snaffle or hackamore) Failure to go beyond markers on stops or rollbacks Fall to ground of horse or rider Break of gait, except where a simple change is called for (patterns A - D) Balking or refusal of command On walk in patterns, failure to stop or walk before executing a lope departure NO SCORE: Not eligible to place or receive a ribbon On run in patterns, failure to be in a lope prior to the first marker Illegal use of Equipment, using reins or romal as a whip Starting circle or exiting rollback at a jog more than two strides but less than ½ or Willful abuse of an animal while in the show arena circle or length of arena FAULTS AGAINST THE HORSE: (score accordingly but do not disqualify) Failure to change lead prior to next maneuver Opening mouth excessively when wearing bit Failure to be on the correct lead prior to the center point of arena Excessive jawing, opening mouth or head raising on stop Lack of smooth, straight stop on haunches-bouncing or sideways stop 5 POINT PENALTIES Anticipating signals, Horse stumbling, Backing sideways Spur in front of the cinch FAULTS AGAINST THE RIDER: (score accordingly but do not disqualify) Use of free hand to instill fear or praise Losing stirrup or holding on Holding saddle with free hand Any unnecessary aid given by the rider (such as unnecessary talking, petting, Blatant disobedience (kicking out, bucking, rearing, striking) spurring, quirting, jerking of reins, and so forth) Failure to run circles or figure eights within the markers is not considered a fault
