02, Jul 2018 VINOO MANKAD The Legend VINOO MANKAD – The Legend As you walk out of the cricket bunglow in Jamnagar and come on to the Bhidbhanjan road, there is a statue in bronze, depecting one of the greatest cricketer who originally belonged to Jamnagar- Saurshtra. Mulvantrai Himmatlal Mankad born on 12th April 1917, popularly known as Vinoo Mankad was son of this soil who not only made name of himself as an accomplished cricketer but also brought laurels for the country. Vinoo Mankad who made his test match debut in 1946, went on to play 44 test matches for India in the career span of more than 13 years. He was a right hand batsman and a slow left arm spinner who scored more than 2100 test runs and took as many as 162 wickets. He was the architect of first test match victory for India against England in Chennai in 1952. He captured 12 wickets for India in that test match and ensured the famous win. Later in that year he appeared on the “honours board” of Lords cricket ground when he took 5 wickets and scored 184 in the same test match at Lords, the first player in 30 years to achieve that mile stone. One of the record which remained intact for more than 52 years was Vinoo Mankad’s first wicket partnership with Pankaj Roy of 413 runs against Newzeland. He individually score 231 runs in that inning and it stood as the highest score by an Indian till 1983 when Sunil gavaskar scored 236 against West Indies on same venue. Vinoo Mankad also played 233 first class matches and achieved some amazing and outstanding statistics. He scored 11591 first class runs and took 782 wickets. He played for Navanagar and WISCA in the first few years of Ranji Trophy, later he also represented Mumbai, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Bengal. It was an era when cricket had a very little exposure and commercial value embodied with it. But what Vinoo Mankad achieved in those times is unargueably unmatched. The grit, determination and skill he possesed and exhibited on the cricket pitch is an inspiration for the cricketers of this generation and the ones to follow. COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

It is a dance of love and passion touching on the divine and the human, the sublime and the mundane. Odhra Magadha, mentioned in Natya Shastra can be identified as the earliest precursor of present day Odissi dance. The techniques of dance movement are built around the two basic postures of the Chowk and the Tribhanga. The chowk is a position imitating a square - a very masculine stance with the weight of the body equally balanced. The tribhanga is a very feminine stance where the body is deflected at the neck, torso and the knees. An Odissi orchestra essentially consists of a pakhawaj player (usually the Guru himself), a singer, a flutist, a sitar or violin player and a manjira player. 1/2 Mankading Recently, in a cricket match of the Indian Premier League 2019 (IPL-2019) a batsman was dismissed in a run out popularly called ‘Mankading’. Mankading’ is a method of run out where a bowler dismisses a non-striker by hitting the bails before bowling when the latter is outside the crease. It is named after an Indian bowler Vinoo Mankad (awarded Padma Bhushan in 1973). Vinoo Mankad, in the India's tour of Australia in 1947/48 ran out Bill Brown not once but twice. This infuriated the Australian media, and running someone out in this way is now referred to around the world as "Mankading”.
