It was based on the plan of elemen- tary instruction adopted in the University of Cape Town during the author's tenure of the chair of zoology. Its object was not then, and is not now, to supplant the many excellent dissecting manuals available for use in the labora- tory. It aims at supplementing laboratory work with a general introduction based on evolutionary principles with emphasis on function throughout. While the original plan remains, each chapter has been extensively revised or, where necessary, entirely rewritten. The chapter in which the Vertebrate skeleton is used to illustrate the principles of geological succession by reference to the fossil record has been recast to take advantage of the many new discoveries which have been made during the past ten years. The author is greatly indebted to Dr. Westoll, Lecturer in Palaeontology in the University of Aberdeen, for advice and information, especially with reference to the design of new illustrations. All the illustrations in the previous edition have been redrawn by Mr. Horrabin, and many new ones have been added or substituted. To help students to practise methodical methods of memorizing essential facts new tabular matter has been introduced in various places. Dr. H. Waring who saw the new edition through the press is responsible for many valuable suggestions. We conclude that these fossil remains represent a bipedal heterodontosaurid but lack diagnostic characters to identify them at the species level, although they probably represent remains of Manidens condorensis, known from the same locality. Histological features suggest a subadult ontogenetic stage for the individual. A cluster analysis based on pedal measurements identifies similarities of this specimen with heterodontosaurid taxa and the inclusion of the new material in a phylogenetic analysis with expanded character sampling on pedal remains confirms the described specimen as a heterodontosaurid. Finally, uncommon features of the digits (length proportions among nonungual phalanges of digit III, and claw features) are also quantitatively compared to several ornithischians, theropods, and birds, suggesting that this may represent a bipedal cursorial heterodontosaurid with gracile and grasping feet and long digits.

Yacobucci, Advisor The placement of Lesothosaurus diagnosticus and the Heterodontosauridae within the Ornithischia has been problematic. Historically, Lesothosaurus has been regarded as a basal ornithischian dinosaur, the sister taxon to the Genasauria. Recent phylogenetic analyses, however, have placed Lesothosaurus as a more derived ornithischian within the Genasauria. The Fabrosauridae, of which Lesothosaurus was considered a member, has never been phylogenetically corroborated and has been considered a paraphyletic assemblage. Prior to recent phylogenetic analyses, the problematic Heterodontosauridae was placed within the Ornithopoda as the sister taxon to the Euornithopoda. The heterodontosaurids have also been considered as the basal member of the Cerapoda (Ornithopoda + Marginocephalia), the sister taxon to the Marginocephalia, and as the sister taxon to the Genasauria. To reevaluate the placement of these taxa, along with other basal ornithischians and more derived subclades, a phylogenetic analysis of 19 taxonomic units, including two outgroup taxa, was performed. Analysis of 97 characters and their associated character states culled, modified, and/or rescored from published literature based on published descriptions, produced four most parsimonious trees. Consistency and retention indices were calculated and a bootstrap analysis was performed to determine the relative support for the resultant phylogeny. The Ornithischia was recovered with Pisanosaurus as its basalmost member.

THE CLASSIFICATION AND GEOLOGICAL DISTRIBUTION OF OUR FOSSIL FISHES. So little is generally known in regard to American fossil fishes, that I have thought the notes which I now give upon some of them would be more interesting and intelligible if those into whose hands they will fall could have a more comprehensive view of this branch of palæontology than they afford. I shall therefore preface the descriptions which follow with a few words on the geological distribution of our Palæozoic fishes, and on the relations which they sustain to fossil forms found in other countries, and to living fishes. This seems the more necessary, as no summary of what is known of our fossil fishes has ever been given, and the literature of the subject is so scattered through scientific journals and the proceedings of learned societies, as to be practically inaccessible to most of those who will be readers of this report. I. THE ZOOLOGICAL RELATIONS OF OUR FOSSIL FISHES. To the common observer, the class of Fishes seems to be well defined and quite distin ct from all the other groups o f vertebrate animals; but the comparative anatomist finds in certain unusual and aberrant forms peculiarities of structure which link the Fishes to the Invertebrates below and Amphibians above, in such a way as to render it difficult, if not impossible, to draw the lines sharply between these great groups.

About a decade later A.S. Woodward at the British Museum (Natural History) (now See table of contents the Natural History Museum, London) acquired specimens through fossil dealer R.F. Damon. Woodward was among the first to describe the fish assemblage of ostracoderms, arthrodires, acanthodians and chondrichthyans. Publisher(s) At the same time the museum also acquired specimens of a large pterygotid eurypterid. Although the vertebrates received considerable attention, the Atlantic Geoscience Society pterygotids at the Natural History Museum, London are described here for the first time. The first pterygotid specimens collected in 1881 by the Geological ISSN Survey of Canada were later identified by Clarke and Ruedemann in 1912 as Pterygotus atlanticus, although they suggested it might be a variant of 0843-5561 (print) Pterygotus anglicus Agassiz. An almost complete pterygotid recovered in 1994 1718-7885 (digital) from the Campbellton Formation at a new locality in Atholville, less than two kilometres west of Campbellton, has been identified as P. anglicus Agassiz.
