Formative Years
CHAPTER 1 Formative Years Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, a seaside town in western India. At that time, India was under the British raj (rule). The British presence in India dated from the early seventeenth century, when the English East India Company (EIC) first arrived there. India was then ruled by the Mughals, a Muslim dynasty governing India since 1526. By the end of the eighteenth century, the EIC had established itself as the paramount power in India, although the Mughals continued to be the official rulers. However, the EIC’s mismanagement of the Indian affairs and the corruption among its employees prompted the British crown to take over the rule of the Indian subcontinent in 1858. In that year the British also deposed Bahadur Shah, the last of the Mughal emperors, and by the Queen’s proclamation made Indians the subjects of the British monarch. Victoria, who was simply the Queen of England, was designated as the Empress of India at a durbar (royal court) held at Delhi in 1877. Viceroy, the crown’s representative in India, became the chief executive-in-charge, while a secretary of state for India, a member of the British cabinet, exercised control over Indian affairs. A separate office called the India Office, headed by the secretary of state, was created in London to exclusively oversee the Indian affairs, while the Colonial Office managed the rest of the British Empire. The British-Indian army was reorganized and control over India was established through direct or indirect rule. The territories ruled directly by the British came to be known as British India. -

MID DAY MEAL: REVIEW MISSION FOR GUJARAT Second Review Mission 19 – 25th, 2010 As part of 2nd Review Mission, a team consisting of Smt Rita Chatterjee, (Joint Sec-MDM, MHRD), Shri D.B. Mehta (Joint Commissioner -MDM, GOG), Ms. Sejal Dand (State Advisor to National Comm. Apptd. By Hon. Supreme Court in WPC 196/2001), Dr. Ankita Sharma (Consultant, UNICEF, Gandhinagar). Co member Dr. Anindita Shukla (Consultant, Food & Nutrition-MDM, NSG) visited Gujarat to see the implementation of the scheme. The team members would like to express gratitude to everyone who gave time, cooperation and hospitality during the visit. MDM Gujarat Review Mission Report, 2010 Page 1 Mid Day Meal Scheme National Programme of Mid Day Meal in Schools (MDMS) is a flagship programme of the Government of India aiming at addressing hunger in schools by serving hot cooked meal, helping children concentrate on classroom activities, providing nutritional support, encouraging poor children, belonging to disadvantaged sections, to attend school more regularly, providing nutritional support to children to drought-affected areas during summer vacation, studying in Government, Local Body and Government-aided primary and upper primary schools and the Centres run under Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS)/Alternative & Innovative Education (SSA) of all areas across the country. In drought- affected areas MDM is served during summer vacation also. Objectives of Joint Review Mission: 1. Review the system of fund flow from State Government to school/ cooking agency level and time taken in this process. 2. Review the management and monitoring system and its performance from State to school level. 3. Review the progress of the programme during 2010-11 with respect to availability of food grains and funds at the school/ cooking agency level, quality and regularity in serving the meal in the selected schools and districts, transparency in implementation role of teachers, involvement of community, convergence with school health Programme for supplementation of micronutrients and health check up etc. -

Mechanization at Porbandar Port ► The GMB devised a proposal to mechanize the existing facility to improve productivity of cargo handling. ► Till now majority of the cargo is being handled through conventional equipment, which adversely affect efficiency parameters such as average ship turnaround time, berth occupancy and output, and resulted in cargo contamination, pollution and fire hazards. ► Mechanized handling at Porbandar Port will require the installation of the following equipment at various stages of the cargo handling value chain. Porbandar Port: Brief Overview ► Porbandar port is an all-weather, direct berthing port, owned and managed by the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB). ► It is located in the West coast of Saurashtra Peninsula, at Porbandar district, Gujarat. ► Latitude: 210 38’ N ► Longitude: 690 37’ E Porbandar ► It provides direct berthing facility upto 50,000 DWT ships. -

Sarma1 College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Junagadh Agricultural University Junagadh -362001, India *Corresponding author ABSTRACT K e yw or ds The present investigation was carried out to study the socio-economic and milking patterns adopted by buffalo keepers in Junagadh and Porbandar districts of Gujarat State. A random Socio economic, sample of 300 buffalo owners were selected from three talukas of Junagadh and two Milking patterns, talukas of Porbandar district. The study showed that a majority of buffalo owners (40%) Buffaloes owners, Gujarat were literate and belonged to middle age group. In the study area, 50.34% of the buffalo owners had large land holding and had nuclear type of family. In this area 82% Article Info respondents milked buffaloes by knuckling method and most of the buffalo owners cleaned udder and teats of buffalo before milking. Majority of respondents milked their Accepted: animal two times with dry hand and used open mouth bucket.
